No. The chalk is brown to begin with. You rub it onto the unbaked clay for color. Then bake like normal and it will bake into it. Most of the chalk with then stay on they clay, though you can cover with a glaze if you want... but then they don't have the matte finish that potatoes usually have. No burning is involved at all. The only time polymer clay is bad for you is the fumes created if it's burned.
i ment burn into clay, ive bought a doll house for my mum its new, just wondered if there are steps for decorating one, like lights first then paint out side, then carpet floor etc

Bake after you chalk it. Some of the chalk may come off, but not much.

You bake it in the oven according to manufacturers instructions. Usually on low temp of around 250F for 20-30 minutes.
