I think that Boromir may have been a complete jerk at first in the movie, but that scene when he gives the speech is incredible.
He also is a great brother to Faramir. Faramir's father never supported Faramir, and constantly berated him. Boromir is a prime example of a excellent brother. He was Faramir's quasi father figure. That's why I like Boromir.
It was only this scene and the flashbacks in the two towers where we see the true borimir and how powerful a warior he was. Without the ring, he is a strong, brave and courageous soldier who threw himself in the way to protect the hobbits. That is the borimir i would like to know
boromir was easily one of the bravest of the nine companions of the fellowship, and easily the most powerful (behind Gandalf). Boromir is definately a warrior i would want on my side in a fight. i cried when he died ;(
@TheMilbournIdentity Then he would have just given up being an adventurer and would have become a guard. That's the a much more worse fate than and epic death
He was an idiot falling under the power of the ring, though that doesnt change how brave he was at that moment, throwing himself in the way of the hobbits and engaging that many knowing he may not make it out. He showed the best of himself and he died in honour and he even knew what an idiot he was to frodo and the ring and the ending shows what he actually was. It was good for both Tolkien and Jackson to portray him in that way, as any other writer or director would of made hima complete ass
@upanddowntwice1 That's the point isn't it? Boromir shows how men are honorable, but easily corrupted. Aragorn himself, who is a direct descendant of the kings of Númenor, would eventually be corrupted by the ring. That's why the separation at the end of FOTR is essential for the story to play out the way it did.
@Verilepakko Basically, at this point Boromir, like any other being, was thinking the good he could do with the ring. The idea of the possibilities of the ring was corrupting Boromir. Now that's something that every human on this planet should be able to relate to. The ring gives you the power to become a demigod->imagine the possibilities=human.
Can someone tell me about Boromir? I watched this a long time ago and forgot what he was like originally and later on at his death... What made us so attached to him? What made him important as a character?
@fl333r he was a prince of gondor (City of men) . he wanted to be a part of the fellowship to honour gondor but the ring every now and then kept on tricking his mind eg. making him angry and selfish sometimes. but bormoir gave his life to safe the others
No !! He rescue Osgiliath and he's one of the greatest gondor figures...It's because of the fear of gondor fall that he succumbs to the ring tentation
Such an emotional scene. In the books, Boromir was described as the the finest warrior man had to offer. Much more so than aragorn. Like while on the mountain, he plowed a path through chest high snow for the hobbits to walk in. The movies never did a good job of showing the strength and valor of boromir and faramir. But this scene redeems Boromir. At the end, when the fellowship reaches him, dozens of uruk hai lay dead around him. Save Gandalf, he were the most potent warrior in the fellowship.
@YankeeSparrow Yeah, aragorn might have had more strength of will, though it might just be his life as a dunedain did not allow for great ambitions which the ring could influence. Boromir on the other hand, loved his city and folk, the ring offered to save them. He did not want it for his own power, but for the power to save gondor. If Aragorn had such a weakness, he might not have resisted the ring. In the end, the book states boromir was the mightiest in the fellowship (save G)
@behemuth Boromir isn't a better fighter than Aragorn. It doesn't say it or even suggest it in the book. He was meant to be not as tall as Aragorn but broader. Aragorn was leaner. However he was of greater lineage and was a greater man. But your right - Boromir was a very valiant warrior and despite his weakness regarding the ring, he redeemed himself in the end. The films don't demonstrate the valour of the men of Gondor, they all seem too weak.
@clynchable Boromir was described as being the mightiest member of the fellowship save Gandalf. If he was a better fighter? no idea, the book is not that specific. However, Where Aragorns strength's lie, therein lies Boromir's weaknesses. Aragorn were not identified by his prowess with the blade, but his strong will. Boromir on the other hand, had his strength in battle and in his compassion for Gondor. Which in the end spelled his doom.
5:09 - Boromir's hand is on Aragorn's shoulder 5:11 - Now it's not. 5:14 - Now it's there. 5:16 - Now it's not. 5:18 - There again. 5:21 - And now it's gone. 5.24 - Look the hand again! 5:32 - Oh, not anymore... and so on... xD
The writer in me adores Boromir and Theoden - they seem to be the only properly 'flawed' characters, and to me that makes them easily the most interesting characters. (Though Gandalf is my favourite character overall, and Sam is amazing too!)
It would've been funny if he didn't die after he said all those words - but still lived for like 30 mins or an houre.. would've been so awkward.. What to say now >.> xD.
But truly amazing scene... Boromir 4 life! (Sean bean ftw!)
I don't understand the haters for Boromir, especially when they compare him to Aragorn. People always say he's the best since he's Dúnedain, was raised and trained by elves, and had a lifetime of expereince ahead of Boromir. Boromir had been born and raised while Gondor fought Morder, his whole life had been war and he got the best Gondorian training since he was the Steward's son. While he didn't have all the experience of Aragorn, he definately kept up. He was a true Gondorian soldier!
@777melkor Those statements got no sustain, aragorn was never depicted as the best warrior (not even better than gimli or maybe faramir), but he was a great all-around guy who could play warrior, healer, scout and so on. Boromir was the finest warrior man had to offer.
@YankeeSparrow I never said he was the best warrior, but Aragorn chose not to belong to any Kingdom of Man (Dunedein doesn't really count), so he wouldn't fit under your definition of "finest warrior man had to offer". Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to prove anything, all I'm saying is that you cant compare Boromir and Aragorn in the way I depicted in my original post. You cant compare anyone in the fellowship with eachother as the better warror since all had different skills
i used to be a great soldier...but than i took an arrow to the chest....and another one ...and another one...and guess what? i still fight on !!! FOR GONDOR!!!!
So let me get this straight, this is a world of magic also right? why couldnt they bring him to some oracles or clerics? they could of resurrected him.
For the same reason they don't have Gandalf magically teleport into Mordor, drop the ring into Mount Doom, and go on his merry way; wrong magic, wrong setting.
sean bean is usually casted to do the best death scenes .. its kinda already obvious that he acts the best at dying but other than that he is a great actor and one of my favorites
That scene is my most determinative experience in cinema ever. The moment when I fell in love with Sean Bean completely and undoubtedly. The whole cast was awesome but what Sean did in this scene was utterly legendary. This man is such a fantastic talent, a really gifted actor. I'm so grateful to him portraying my favourite fantasy hero this brilliantly. After 10 years or so it still gives me thrills and tears. My hat off to you, Sean Bean. I'm under your spell since then.
I think this is one of the most beautiful yet tragic scene in all the history of cinema. I wished Boromir would have lived to see the white city once again...
@KnightWolf919 No but since he played the character of Odysseus (forgive me I have a hard time spelling that name) his luck wouldn't have improved much :)
In the end Aragorn was never the human of the fellowship, Boromir was. He was weak and pathetic, brave and compassionate. His inner conflicts are those of any of us, and despite his errors and his fragility, he died without having ever been a coward. An example for all of us, never tried to be evil or hero, just the best man he could be.

@KnightWolf919 No but since he played the character of Odysseus (forgive me I have a hard time spelling that name) his luck wouldn't have improved much :)

Eddar... I mean Boromir would have taken his ass back to the void.
