In the restored train depot in Sparta, there is a photo of the "Welcome to Sparta" sign,at 1:24. It was erected near the depot by the production crew.
What's the name of that county where Sparta, Mississippi is? I guess there was a scene in this film showing the border of state Arkansas near that Sparta, so it must be county on the east side of river Mississippi.
Your spot on! Also the scene at the Endicott cotton fields were filmed near Millington,Tn. which is just north of Memphis. The films producers used Sparta because of the water tower, and during the films production in 1966 the south was very unrest with the civil rights movement.
actually this was filmed on the gm&o in sparta illinois, not sparta mississippi, for two reasons, first there is no such town as sparta miss, secondly, the gm&o ceased passenger service on the south end of the line through mississippi on october 14 1958, this movie was realeased in 1968, oh yeah this was a purely a staged scene since no more gm&o trains operated through sparta illinois
excuse me, no more gm&o "passenger trains" operated through sparta illinois ,the gm&o still operated 4 through freights through sparta, freight train #'s 29&30, mobile al to east st louis illinois , and trains 32&33, new orleans to east st louis illinois until the merger with the illinois central in september 1972
A tragic shame that this beautiful E7 locomotive was eventually scrapped. These race horses were built and geared for 100 mph operation in the 1940s and many lasted to the 1970s. Out of the hundreds produced, only one EMD E7 survives today in a musuem in Strasburg, Pennsylvania.
I'll second that; great song, great film. 'Super-Spade vs the Rednecks' as the Yippies used to call it. Poitier and Steiger at the height of their powers. Ta very much mate.

The closest city to what Sparta was, would be Greenwood Mississippi.

This song really fit the movie. I'm wondering why it wasn't nominated.

That's an excellent question. Especially given that it was a composition of the great Quincy Jones that was recorded by his best friend Ray Charles.

I'm shocked that this song wasn't nominated for Best Original Song, let alone win in that category! Brother Ray know he put a killin' on that piano!

There is a Sparta Mississippi. It's nowhere the size of Sparta Illinois, but it does exist.

Can you post the movie's end? Great shot of the E7 and the short train it was pulling.
