McDonalds is not always hiring. That is a common misnomer. Right now, there is 5 people looking for every job that is available, and that is including fast food jobs. And a 25 years old with catering experience will beat out 4 19 year olds looking for a job at McDonalds any day of the week.

Work at a restaurant and you get free or discounted food. Work at some motels and get a free room. Work on a ranch or farm and get free room and board, meals, etc

Did I miss it? What did the 19 year old want to do for employment? Did he have a dream that he wanted to work towards? What was stopping him from finding work? Why was pan handling an option when he has parents? I'd sooner let someone work around my storefront before I handed out money. I'd rather give him a sandwich or a jar of PB rather than cash, especially if he is hungry.

@ladylordess Agreed. I've discovered that many panhandlers do so because they make their own hours and can actually make quite a bit of money each afternoon. Instead of spending those 4 or 5 hours standing in the cold, *hoping* someone will give you change, you could have been at a job - any job - making at least $8 or $9 an hour. Work at a restaurant and you get free or discounted food. Work at some motels and get a free room. Work on a ranch or farm and get free room and board, meals, etc

It would have been interesting to hear what the young guy would say to working for something less than minimum wage, just to get started. e.g Would he be willing to work for maybe $5 an hour for a few months until he learned a few skills and so increased his worth to an employer. Would he be able to understand that maybe the minimum wage thing is perhaps a hindrance to him finding a job?
