As for River I agree she can come across as obnoxious. I didnt take to her at all in The Library. Because of the nature of the plot with her first episode being her last in the storyline I found it rather tedious having the show gate crashed by someone we hadn't even met yet. Was sort of like shitting on the audience by saying I've got a character you don;t know jack about so let;s rub it in your face with her smarminess. She has evened out a litle but I still find it all preposterous as again..

@bluejeckett Some would argue that the fact that we know so little about her makes her such an intriguing character. I'm sure Moffat's intention wasn't for her to smugly rub in peoples faces that fact, but to have everyone guessing in anticipation until the eventual big reveal. I personally like the mystery in anything, not being told flat-out the explanation of everything. Where's the fun in that?

Oh, and as for Matt referring to the TARDIS as sexy. It's simple, he's not Hartnell nor Baker

@OpticalFunkllusions Hmm fair enough point about River I spose, now we know she's Amy and Rory's daughter, but your second point, thats the point, Matt IS William and Harntnell, he;s the same guy ie the Dr, so the Dr goes from talking like he's in the 1920's with come along my child, which incidentally matt kind of talks like where he calls Amy "Pond" same as Hartnell called Ian "Chesterton" but he suddenly decides to use contempory slang like hes a teenager does he? Inconsistency in charcter

If an old man said sexy these days he'd be looked at funny. But yes I take your point about the Doc being virtually carte blanche when it comes to who he is in each new person, but the overall character has to have consistency or else we can;t know it;s the same guy, by mere fact he changes into a new guy everytime he changes

@bluejeckett we need to see the constants to remeember that William Hartnell, Pat Troughtoin, Pertwee, Baker, Davison, Colin Baker, McCoy, McGann, Eccleston, Tennant and Matt are ALL the same person. So no matter what metamophisis he goes thorugh there are some traits which need to define him as the one and only person he is. ONe thing was his old fashioned dress sense, which they screwed up with Ecelston frankly, and Tennant with his bloody runners, but the one thing the doc never said was sexy

@bluejeckett I think the main point that trumps all is: it's a TV show. The best, yes, but a show nonetheless. He's not only had different actor, but writers and producers behind him. So let's all lighten up and enjoy a big bowl of strawberry iced cream!

@bluejeckett I guess the many years they've spent together has created an even stronger bond since when we first laid eyes on The Doctor. It's the only main thing he has that reminds him of the home and people he lost. And besides, "sexy" is hardly a trendy glib. People in the 50's would refer to each other in that manner. But, like I said, I think Steven just wanted to create a stronger and more personal bond between the two. And we as the audience care much more for the TARDIS as a result

...using up plot tools at a meteoric rate that can't last. He is a genius scrptwriter but that genius shouldve been used sparingly. He's now got the weight of entire series on his shoulder where he use to be able to contribute his gem here or there without using up all his ideas in one go. I fear his time on the show will be limited as he will now have to keep topping his own efforts, an impossible task.

...stories can be done on pirate ships? That's like saying no further stories should be done on earth since he's spent alot of time there or no further stories shoud be done involving daleks. As long as the story is good what's it matter. This IS the first story of the new series set aboard a pirate ship. My problem wasnt with the pirate ship but with the fact the story itself was rather a rehash of The Empty Child.

I think it's all very fine for Moffat to be show runner but he's also.....

...pretty boy Tennant rubbish. Youve got to look at the new Doc as an evolution process. Chris was nothing like the Doc in appearance really his costume was utter rubbish but it eased the way for Tennant who in turn has now eased the way for Smith who in my opinion is the first truely dressed Doc ie: old fashioned style clothing It's taken 5 years but the character has now finally properly arrived.

And as for pirates there have been several stories set on ships why does that mean no further..

In response to Sallys furore, new Doc is just as good as old Doc and I don' think you can compare what passed for television in 1973 with what passes for television today it's apples and oranges. Yes there are things about the old one that are lacking in the new one and vice versa.

As far as the writing of the new one goes RTD turned Doc into a soap opera and while that might've given the show depth it really wasn;t in the spirit, Moffat has at least got rid of some of that drippy soppy....

This the perfect place to say this. And why do people keep assuming that just because I don't care for moffat's crap writing that I must "love" RTD'S? I don't like either man's stupid rendition of the Dr Who. I love the old who. It had charm and really good stories. The new ones are so stupid. AND I do understand them. Just because someone doesn't like a story does NOT mean they do not understand them . It is possible to write 1 hr stories that are almost as good as these old ones.

half the fans! according to live journal 54% of the fans can't stand her! (except in the library) Most of us are curious who she is, but once that's revealed, watch the ratings drop off. I didn't even waste my time watching last Sat. We fans have already seen the dr on a pirate ship. uh, 'Englightenment'? The dr and his crew start out on a Edwardian ship and then visit the pirate ship and then the Dr and Turlough brought the ship into port. So been there, seen that. Moffat has nothing new!

First, this isn't really the place to say this, and second, though I myself am not entirely in love with River, and I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, we just have to accept that Moff's scripts aren't exactly like RTD's. I am also not as fond of Moff's writing (they could really use more references to previous seasons and Doctors), but I don't go around bashing the show. No offense is meant by this comment.

Some idiots over on BBC channel here on youtube are gushing over how great the new stories are. Now they are entitled to their own opinions, I personally think most of the new stories are rubbish. I know that RTD "claims" he didn't have to rewrite Moffats scripts but I doubt thats true. When he wrote scripts under RTD his scripts were pretty good. Now that he is in charge the stories are absurd! a 2-headed alien who wants to marry itself? A gross obnoxious character (River) who annoys more then
