I don't want to buy 10-100 dollar software online and then spend hours downloading it. If they drop support for discs and companies stop making discs, then I'd stop buying software on OS X.
The way the world is moving today, I would say that Blu Ray and DVD's will only be around for about another two possibly three years, because everybody stream or either download HD quality videos.
I prefer a Blu-Ray movie on my HDTV than watching an HD movie on my Mac that I bought on iTunes or in any digital format any day. I think the picture and sound quality is better, it has more features and it is a physical copy I can hold at night or take to a friends house. Going disc less is convenient but I really like Blu-Ray.
My question is, if you're willing to pay for all the movie collections, wouldn't you be watching them on a bigger TV? Not everyone watches blu ray movies on computers and if you want the disc, you can always get an external drive. There's no need for apple to make their computer more expensive than they are now for something that a fraction of their customers want.
Apple has been known to be a dick with their own versions of iEverything. I guess they'll come out with a new type of memory card, calling it the birth of a new era and all that lame bullshit.
@fatimmortal Just because they want to make their own things doesn't mean they are complete douches. I mean windows is on almost every computer platform (sony, gateway, hp, acer, etc). I mean if Apple had never made OS X and just stuck with windows stuff. There would be no iPod, iPad, iPhone, etc. They will still be using usb mp3 players or the...Zune......and the tablets....would have been HORRIBLE. Ever since the first iPad came out, the companies surprising came out with almost the same thing
It's kinda weird I understand why you'd be phasing out DVD/CD's but they should atleast let you play blurays, I got a bluray burner in my pc and I only use it to watch movies really but then again I suppose if your that bothered there is always a ps3
I honestly cannot remember the last time i used the drive on my MacBook Pro... As for my iMac, I used it the other week to install a printer software as my net connection was down temporarily, but before that it was a longggg time... In 2011 I have maybe used optic drives 5 times... I certainly don't need one in my next computer
Yet again another reason why macs are inferior pc's.The cloud is a nifty idea but generically flawed in concept.Assuming everyone wants to leave the rights to there personal property in the hands of someone who can take it away at anytime is really just nuts. What does it hurt apple to offer a blueray as a option? nothing realy... in the end mac is just mad that it does not own the rights to blueray.
You really think Apple would phase out the optical drive? Sure they won't support Blu-Ray. They may be phasing out physical hardware, but I think there'd be a huge uproar if Macs could no longer play DVDs.
I don't use the CD drive anymore other than burning DVD's for people... no big use. If you need a DVD/CD drive anymore then just get a USB/Firewire external drive.
@BassPounderX Eventually you will get decent broadband everywhere. Bear in mind that in the US, although you may get unlimited downloads, their average download speed is slow compared to Europe and Asia. Most broadband in the UK is unlimited, and its even possible to get unlimited MOBILE broadband! And it really is unlimited!
But i agree - however, other companies could use the flash storage method - its much faster to install games from flash than disk too ;)
@MrSkinnyBill yea eventually but for now I don't like where this is going i know download speeds are a bit slower but id take that for unlimited downloads
I say, Leave the Blu-Ray for big flat screen TV's there is no reason for apple to buy the rights for Blu-ray. First off it will be a waste of money, and second of all, you don't buy a mac for movies, of course the screen is amazing and movies are phenomenal on the mac, but you buy a mac for functionality, and a mac computer meets many needs for graphic designers, and such. Yes they are used for movie editing a lot but, wasting money? Not in this enonomy your not.
Wait, there is no way to watch Blue Ray movies on a Mac? No third party video player like VLC? I don't know much about Mac's which is why I am asking.
@ffnlink You can watch when you have the whole file on your computer VLC should have support, don't think quicktime though but quicktime sucks so yea, but through dvd player, no.
I think all types of disk/cartridge-based media is dead. Sure Hollywood still uses them for movies but we all know Hollywood is behind on times. For those who use them to burn backups, use thumb drives. Much better.
No way! If anything, Apple's trying to do away with physical media. Thus no optical drive in the MBA and probably the MBP shortly. I'd never burn BluRays, and occasionally when I want to watch one, I'll just use my PS3. No need for one in my computer.
I refuse to switch to non physical media for a few reasons, one big one is that you don't get extras through other services. admittedly I don't buy a ton of movies a year, but of those I do, I like to dive into every nook and cranny, not just the movie itself, which seems about all the other methods offer.
Hell even Microsoft doesn't supports blu-ray on their xbox 360 platform
And yet.. you can't beat blu-ray when ti comes to quality. Sure it has loading times.. but once it runs you get oh my god so good video quality and audio quality.
Oh Netflix this, and itunes that, and fucking internet all that. ITS ACTUALLY NICE TO HAVE A PHYSICAL DISK YOU KNOW. INTERNET IS DOWN, SHIT CANT EVEN WATCH A FILM.Wait we will over come that problem by downloading it. Wait, my hard drive is full, and dont want to pay money for an external one when I can just go to the shop and pick up a physical copy for half the price. I think peoples minds are to set on this idea of making every thing, for lack of a better word, interised.
@FAB12UCB How often is your internet down? Twice a year if you're paying your bill? Yeah I thought so. How often is your HD full? If you say more than twice a year, then you aren't very smart.
@sean1256 What about power cuts? Also, my internet goes down about once every month. It doesn't make me stupid, it just means I have a shit ISP. "Change ISP then" No, because I have the fastest ISP in the UK, on the fastest connection available in the UK ant the moment. Why would I change?
Too bad, I use blu-ray to archive my photos and videos on and cloud hosting is not cost-effective when you're dealing with terabytes of data. I'm already within 80% of my 200GB cap each month and there's no way Cockmast has the infrastructure or bandwidth to deliver blu-ray's in real time and will probably end up trying to stifle users rather than investing in making the experience better.
@fiddlebiscuits2 Probably losing all of their customers because you wont be able to put a disk into the computer. How do they expect people to install games they have already brought? Do you expect you to buy it again? What about software, do they want you to buy all that again, or will they fund everyone with new non-physical copies of everything?
i really don't care for the optical drive I'm pulling it out soon and sticking a SSD in its place i only ever burn music cps with the optical drive so if i need to i would just plug it in via usb other then that its just taking up space in my mbp
Just saying I buy CDs and would like to put those on my iTunes account and sometimes like to watch a movie on my laptop that I already paid for I don't wanna pay for it again.
@vgking699 the movie studio can brun 50GB blu-ray because the file they give to the cinema is on about 500GB. but if they burn 50GB no one needs to got to the cinema.
I think these top comments are giving a more accurate view on this.
I mean really, movies aren't gonna be download. Avarage user isn't looking to have a great internet connection in the coming five years (i'd estimate). What if you want to use your mac as a DVD player or equivalent.
I can already see that Apple is cutting down on their optical drives as in there MacBook Airs and soon enough the Pros but i would like to have an optical drive in my computer. Duallayer Blu-ray = 50Gb with movie
when you have to have internet that support 524288KBs / 524MBs (100minutes) then we will talk
modalen2 2 months ago
@modalen2
50GB is only the size of the dual layered disk, but no single movie actually takes that much memory, they are still less than 10GB
and streaming HD video works great already
but I do still want physical disks to own, we'd still need massively huge hard drives to store all our movies that we owned at digital copies
and no body has fixed the issue with sharing content
meaning if we own a bluray movie we can easily bring to other peoples houses to watch them but not with digital
