As a saxophonist, there is nothing difficult or special per se about what he did. The most difficult thing he did was performing well in front of a large audience...He just put a ton of vibrato and dynamics into the piece, which is always good, but is not "a huge talent"...High schoolers can play this.

@ERIK000000000 A Saprano sax (the instrument Julian was playing) is the hardest to keep in tune and the fact that he pulled it off fantastically was impressive.
I think this guy sounds amazing. My son plays classical clarinet, flute/ picolo and just recently has picked up alto and soprano sax. I am sending him these videos of Julian as I think he will love this guys playing. So humble yet so talented. Go Julian. Great to hear such a talented player.
It's like these judges are trying to compare the noises coming from that sax to a human voice. Hitting and holding a high note for ten seconds with your own voice is a whole hell of a lot harder than simply blowing air through a tube and holding a button down. That was possibly, just possibly enough to go to the next round, but nothing near enough to deserve any sort of semi final appearance.
@Riverweasel09 playing saxophone isn't that easy as you think. I play guitar myself, and people think that's easy too. As a musician, you appreciate other musicians faster, because you know how hard it is. You can immediately say that you aren't one. I know singing is difficult too. You just cannot compare those with each other.

@asdejeya its a SOPRANO saxophone. because its higher than the alto and tenor sax its shorter so its similar to a clarinet. the alto and tenor sax have the conventional shape you are thinking of

actually, I played that song, at my first year with my alto saxophone, 3 years ago, the pitch was a little hard for me though, but with time it's easy. and it's not jazz, or blues, were everything is more complex, and yo have to create random solos. And I was like 10 I think. But it was a great choice, soothing, relaxing, but it's not something that amazing.
The sax is the perfect instrument for songs like this which come from musicals. It's about the closest thing to the human voice that you can get without actually singing. Brilliant performance
@thomas13est Actually in recent years technology has made it possible to create smaller saxophones such as the sopranino and soprillo. They are a bit too high for my liking though!
I am a saxophone major and this shocked me it makes me honestly wants me to take my bari and through it in a corner and take my dusty soprano case blow it off and learn the song hes plays because he plays beautifully and i can tell you why he is what a musician is expressive,passionate, and puts his emotion into music because music and art are pure raw emotion.
@saxitysax there is no such thing as a "saxophone major" as a title/profession; and you aren't an experienced saxophone player yet, you're 14. There is nothing really impressive about his performance, anyone at a high school jazz band or youth band is capable of playing what he played. It's the basics,(, dynamics, feel, control, timing breaths) anyone who pursues jazz performance at a university pass's this level before auditioning.
@saxitysax You are honestly a dumbass. While this may have expression it shows no skill whatsoever. I am a sophomore in high school who mainly plays alto and bari. I have been playing soprano for about a month and I can play like this easily. The fact that you are a sax major worries me since you are so affected by this mediocre performance.

@saxitysax You are honestly a dumbass. While this may have expression it shows no skill whatsoever. I am a sophomore in high school who mainly plays alto and bari. I have been playing soprano for about a month and I can play like this easily. The fact that you are a sax major worries me since you are so affected by this mediocre performance.
