The story is based on the real events of King Louis XVI, his queen Marie Antoinette and royal colonel Oscar de Jargayes before, meanwhile and after the French Revolution.
Without a doubt the best anime of all times. So well written, complex and interesting characters not to mention historically accurate! The french version is called: Lady Oscar and it is superb!
I didn't realize this anime had some fanservice in it 0:03. When I first saw this in an abridged series I didn't realize this was made in the 70s but after seeing the opening the animation does look pretty old.
You took the words right from my mouth! There are hundred of wonderful classic japanese animes available, but it seems the americans are only interested in lisensing gory, sexually perverted japanese bad animes. I don't know what the hell is wrong with their taste. Wonderful old animes like Lady Oscar, Captain Tsubasa, Saint Seiya, Heidi Girl of Alps, Lady Georgie, Attack No.1, Creamy Mami, My Daddy Long Legs etc are completed ignored.
I feel the same way even though i was born in late 80s. I treasure those animes that are wonderfully drawn by human hands from the old days; today's japanese animes are typically computerized and most stories are often related to fighting, horrors, action thrillers, sex-joke type comedies. What a bore. The reason why animes are so attactive is because they have the beauty of human touch. Animes that are before late 90s are all wonderfully done. I wish America would llcense more old animes.

@MeekKitty i would say that lady oscar is one of the best heart touching anime ever
but death note is also great just not like the rose of versailles .. ^^

Live-Evil Fansub has it. Google them, or just google rose of versailles megaupload, it always works for me when I'm trying to find a series. :)

Actually I kind of like the sex joke type comedies. Dokuro chan is a perfect example. To be honest I'm not really into old school anime.

Years have passed and animations improved, but Rose of Versailles stands still as one of the greatest. Love the singer's voice, really beautiful.
