I originally posted this as a response, but I'll post it as a regular comment.

1) The OtherOS option has been removed in newer firmware versions.

2) On systems that still have it, the guest OS is ran in a virtual machine with limited access to the PS3's resources.

3) Even with full access to the RAM, the PS3 only has 256 MB of system RAM, which isn't enough for a lot of PC games.

@noobkillerpwnz No offence but you're stupid. Firstly, to run games like the ones you specified through Linux, you'd need to use Wine, which isn't stable at all. Secondly, the PS3 only has a 3.2GHz processor and 256MB RAM + 256MB Graphics Card. For most PC games you need at least a DualCore 2.2GHz and 1GB+ RAM & 512MB Graphics Card, plus you'd need even more spec to be able to run it smoothly on a PS3, through Linux, through Wine. It will never happen.

I have ydl 7 on one ps3 and ubuntu on the other. ubuntu is slow compared to yellow dog but is much easier to work with. so I suggest going with what you prefer and how deep you wanna get into it. but still having problems with adobe. but yes you can still play it as a ps3 + network. all functions are strill intact. and if you need ps3 magic to install it...don't install it :)~

sadly no. the ps3 isn't a computer, so ur just stuck with the 512mb of ram it has. but, poor performance is due to the software. the os has no way of reading all the ram for some reason. the ps3 can be a decent computer if they worked on the software some more.

yeah ur right with ubuntu 9.04 and i also believe 9.10 u just type in "game" without the quotes in the kboot menu and hit enter and u get back the ps3 OS which is called XMB OS. if that doesn't work then just turn off ur ps3 and hold the power button until u hear a second beep. the only thing u will noticed is it loses the wallpaper setting. thats not a big issue

You're doing nothing wrong actually. Your PS3 might have a different cd driver/firmware or whatever than the other PS3s. Try another Ubuntu distb. like 8.10 or 9.10.

The only thing I can think of is that during the installation I selected WiFi. Then when it didn't detect my wap, I selected "Do not configure connection at this time" or however it was worded. Then after the install was complete and booted to the gnome desktop, I clicked the wireless connection icon and it showed my wireless as an option. I entered my key and that was it. My connection was detected and detects every time on boot now. :)

well the reason y i prefer ubuntu over linux is in my opinion i find it better 2 use and it doesn't feel outdated. and plus it feels like a mac and windows 2gether in 1 os but linux style of course. and another reason y is that it is more reliable (even though it uses 256MB of RAM) than yellow dog. yellow dog is ok but i feel like its outdated and needs improvements

yeah it did. and the way that i had 2 fix that is 4 the ps3 2 install the files again and install it again. note use ethernet 2 install. don't use wi-fi. the eycryption part do not enable it cuz that will lead u 2 not be able 2 log in. and the hard drive formatting tell it 2 use the whole hard drive (it will not affect the ps3 partition) and have it 2 format automatically. then after that install it and the clock option don't use UTC time. i find it that it installs better with that off

1: in some cases yeah. remember the ps3 is like a crappy computer. it has 3.2 GHz yes but the memory is 256MB. thats wat makes it crappy. and theres no way 2 increase that becuz the ram is built-in and non-removable.

you can use gnash for flash support. from your terminal, run " sudo apt-get install gnash mozilla-plugin-gnash". There's an article on the main page of the psubuntu website that gives more info about this. It's called "Youtube on PSUbuntu [UPDATED]"

great vid man im getting an 80Gb ps3 and i want to put ubuntu on it but i need to know how much space this takes and btw can we attach a keyboard and mouse to the ps3 and then use it

thanks. ubuntu will take up 4GB so if u partition it with 10GB 4 ubuntu then u'll have 6GB left. yeah that u definitely can do with the usb port. u should buy a usb hub just in case u wanna connect more things 2 it. the ps3 only brings 2 usb ports

that i'm not sure. the ps3 is a 128-bit system so idk if ubuntu is running in 128-bit or 64-bit. or maybe 32-bit

The PS3 is a 128 bit system but it almost always goes in 32 bit mode. Even in games.
