Jimmy Boughton (drummer for the Mellophonics) committed suicide in L.A. after the death of his Mother. Lee Peters ( lead singer for Mellophonics and Collage) not sure but I heard that it was due to heart problems, Ricky Gilmore (bassist for Mellophonics, Parliament / Funkadelics) I hear it was also heart problems.

The lead singer is Lee Peters from Sacramento. He started out in the top rated band in Sacramento called The Mellophonics, Also in the band was bassist Ricky Gilmore who went on to play for Parliament. My cousin Jimmy Boughton, drummer extraordinaire, Mr. Desmangles lead guitar, and Malcolm, the smooth falsetto vocalist. Lee Peters passed away in the late nineties and Jimmy passed away in the late eighties. Two talented brothers are gone.

Collage was SOLAR's raw answer to Heatwave (funky multi-racial band where all members play their own instruments)! They were great, but I think they needed other producers (eg Fenderella, Leon Sylvers, Calloway Team) for their funky grooves instead of the Whispers (leave them for the slow jams)!
Wow!!!! Been looking for this tune for soooo many years!!!!! Forgot it was Collage, kept thinking Shalamar, love this tune!!!!!! Thanks soooooooo much for the post!!!!
@heyroz27 and tkodahawk: Looked for this song since 89, when I lost the single. a remake is in order and I'm doin it, with a flute overlay. The bass is bumpin. Yeah I used to sing this and the ladies just ate it up. Most never heard it outside L.A. You get 5 stars again heyroz27. Now if you can help me find "Tender" by Carrie Lucas I'd be more than a fan. You are the shiznit.
WOW!!!! I have been searching for the name and artist of this song for a long time. People were starting to make me feel like i was crazy cause no one didn't remember it. Feels good to know others liked this song.

This reminds me of the summer of 83... Going swimmin', bein fast, just havin fun. Our radio station used to rock the house. KBBG(beautiful black giant). Iowa in the house! Yeah, you heard right, IOWA!!!
I am searching for a song of Collage that is nowhere to find, from a later album. I don't know the title of this song but it really is a very good jam. Any idea? Please help me and post a max :-)
A Classic! just a straight up make u feel good song, takes you back to that era, makes you wonder what in the world happened to that type of music????
Thanks heyroz27 for the post, I honestly felt Collage was a very underrated group in the Solar stable, and I felt they deserved more love than they got.
Deveraux was with me down Silver Lake during the fall of 84 when we Hooded Down and set the pearls on Cep,manodrama it was a Twirler,I recall the C-masta Zipp was revving his Humber
Heyroz, What 's up my sista, Croon3. Now you know if you're gonna pull this one out, you gotta post"Move in Time" off this album. I wanna wish you a Happy New Year and thanks for the cuts.
Wicked track...back then i remember this got jammed after the mainstream nightclubs and Disco's had closed...(back then at 2am)...then it was off to the local illegal blues club in a cellar or garage somewhere til 6am....wicked...Terry
What a track! I was living out at Tulare, while this was playing I was trying to fight off a Gila monster. Man that sun was beating down, making that monster irritable. I left it and went dancing back to my garage to the sounds of Collage to work on my Avenger. I flew to Encinitas the next day. Great old times! Great music!
I love this song to the most. Beautiful. Todays pitiful effort simply does not compare. This is where music is truly at. the 80's. I never could decide which one i liked the most, this one or Lowrell's Mellow Mellow (right on) hmmmmmmm.....thinking
I'll never forget the first time I heard this was on KUOP in Stockton California they use to jam there station from the campus. Brian Sampson played all the jams when they first came out man this bring back so many memories. Music was the best during the 80's great vocals, harmonies and song writing. Im so glad I was in junior high and high school when so many great acts were just coming on the music scene. How did Lee Peters pass and may God rest his soul.
Lee Peters and Collage represented Sacramento and the Glen Elders to the fullest. He was the voice, sounded a little like Howard Hewitt. Man this song brings back memories of them playing at the state fair. "Winners and losers" is another great song from Lee! I'm so glad I found their double cd on the net. Lee R.I.P. brother your memory lives on.
This was an all out hit during my childhood growing up in NY. Although it didn't peak as high as it should've on the R&B Billboard charts, again, this song got major spins up top. SOLAR was still in its prime and unstoppable like the legendary Motown, Stax, and Philly labels. COLLAGE didn't at all get the spotlight deserved. This same song was penned by the talented Whispers' member Nicholas Caldwell. COLLAGE was even their back-up band at one time.
"Move In Time " is another sweet song from that soul era from them.Doubt it was made a single, talkless of a video. But after "Romeo Where's Juliet", "Move In Time" is my 2nd best from them..Another good single by Collage was "Young Girls" from 83.
Man, this was my jam. '83 was my sophomore year in college and we used to pump this at the beginning of parties. It was a starter type mellow record before the hip hop and house.

Even you and cousin Butch's first song "Fry Man" back in was it forth or fifth grade.... And the good old "Black Rose" days when you would always spotlight me and my dates and sing me a special slow jam! Class act. There can never be another.
classic collage man..cannot find their videos though.fell in love with them when i heard "Romeo Where's Juliet?" from 1985. Music like this is non existent int hese lame times.
