Most American Afrocentric ideas were established in a time when Black people were far less educated and had far less access to the resources required to adequately research and understand history with any precision.
Most of it is about establishing for American Blacks, some form of cultural heritage as nearly 500 years out of their place(s) of origin was more than an adequate amount of time to destroy or distort whatever sense of culture they originally came with.
For instance: during the 50's - 70's many American Blacks who were part of the Afrocentric movement wore dashikes and refused to chemically treat the hair (Afros) in an effort to re-associate their selves with their historical origins in Africa.
Afrocentrism served the same psychological yearnings in American Blacks that a trip back to Ireland serves to a White American of Irish ancestry. Everyone needs & desires to belong to something greater than their self.
On these grounds, I don't see the "Afrocentric" ideas as anything worth debating. This was a tool for coping and most Blacks don't hold to any of the ideas it attempts to promulgate.
