This opening is absolutely brilliant! Just brilliant!

Not to mention legendary.... With endearing vocals by Maaya Sakamoto, composition by Yoko Kanno, and lyrics by Yuho Iwasato.

The opening sequence is classic, and the anime itself was something to behold as well. Shoji Kawamori (with Celtic and Norse influence; I presume) outdid himself as a writer, Nobuteru Yuuki crafted some unique (if not notorious) character designs, and Kazuki Akane's eclectic -- though mostly shojo influenced direction

escaflowne is an easy series to get addicted too, becuse it was that good.

Sadly it came out in 1996, the same year as evangelion. each character was dynamic and had multiple dimensions....especially the villains.
