This Oslo show should have made it to DVD... alas the only copies are VHS from the TV. Come on Sting... release it. With a Vinnie only mix as a bonus. :-)
@dondinoy Tis good, but it's the bit before me that gets me. The bit you're talkin about is really just bounce triplets over something they have no business being over. The bit before that is rhythm that would take scientists and mathematicians a great many years trying to work out what the fuck is going on.
@ShaneMcD77 I wonder wether the 4:43 to 4:47 bit is RLL phrased over sixteenths. Because its over 5 it sounds insane. Not saying I would have come up with it!! ... make that 32nds
@Oxpost I think 4:43 onwards is far less complicated that the section just before it. As I'd said, as far as I can hear, 4:43 just started with a series of bounce triplets - RLL RLL with the R on the bell of the ride and the LL on the HH. As @PoloABD mentioned, it's likely to be "32nds" but, in this time sig (where there's 5 counts split into 10 pulses on the ride) its "20s" counted in RLLRLL. The whole outro is split into 20s and the part just before 4:43 is VERY rhythmically complex.
@StSteveofthejobs 5/4, 5/8, I dunno, ask Vinnie - he's a fuckin fucker... :) Am gonna post a video response to this of another song in 5 somethin. It's a band I was in and the drum part is inspired by this song and the ideas around it. The live version of the song is better because we used to jazz it up a bit, but, alas, all you'll get is the studio version. It's gonna be posted as a response to this........... NOW! :)
@StSteveofthejobs The meter is a play on title "Seven Days". It's in 7/8. Vinnie is playing quarter note accents on the hi-hat, so the accent shifts from the beat to the off beat notes over a two bar pattern. Could explain the confusion.
@akivapotok It's not in 7. Saint Augustine In Hell is in 7; Love I Stronger Than Justice is in 7 - and Vinnie deals with these songs similarly to Seven Days as far as what's going on on top accent-wise versus what's going on in the groove is concerned, but Seven Days (although it would be nice for the signature to be set to the title) is certainly not in 7. Sting counts 2 groups of 5 at the start indicating that it's either in 5/4 or 5/8 - whichever gets the most Google hits I guess! :D
I pride myself on the fact that drums have been my bread and butter for 24 years now........ then i watch Vinnie play...... it always makes me feel like turning my drums in to flower pots.
I was just moved in a way that only music.. beautiful, amazing music could ever and will ever do. I dont know what to say accept thank you. I'm smitten by this.. and eternally inspired. Vinnie, Sting, all of them.. thank you.
Vinnie, Vinnie, Vinnie. Quite simply outstanding. As a drummer, It's truly inspiring to watch and listen to...other days I feel like quitting but that doesn't last long.
normally i would (and generally i do) agree with all of you guy's - on vinnie being the best, but here it seems just a bit 'business as usual' to me (having have heard many versions of the tune)
@SuperHighGloss I personally think it's one the most tasteful drumwise. The difference between this and the studio version drumwise is remarkable - although the studio version is the song that brought my attention to Vinnie. I wouldn't say so much "business as usual" than effortless. The whole band is on fire!
People should learn to use other adjectives other than 'best'. It's one of the major illnesses found in you tube commentary. It's too, how should I put it -absolutist.
@tzinguilev Vinnie is a great drummer for sure but not the best drummer in the world not by a long shot. As far as Stings drummers Omar Hakim was the best drummer he had. That band was his most expressive and soulful and simply can't be matched.

How "up his own ar-e" to introduce Dominic Miller as "his guitarist".
He should have passed the mic to Dominic Miller so that he could announce..."this is Sting, my singer"!

@akivapotok What you're saying doesn't even make sense. Playing quarter notes in 7/8 would be this:
7/8 Q's accented: 0-0-0-0|-0-0-0-|
