the e39 m5 have a vanos sound like a diesel in the idle,thats normal.but this is very loud!!
when my hood is closed u can barely hear it,outside.when u sit inside u hear nothin'.proof that u use 10w60 oil and maybe u should check your vanos at a bmw dealer when it didnt get better.at worst u have 2 change the unit.i think thats too loud.good luck!

Again use oil system cleaner than a thicker oil. One grade though. From 5-30 try using 0W-40

Sounds like a stuck valve/lifter, a piston in backwards, or a really bad pin "tic". Is it a hot engine or a cold engine noise.....both?

Yeh I know... I only recently bought the car, and it was like that when I bought it. Will be replaced soon.
