All documents from those times indicate the huge ammont of trees gave it it's name,Madeira(wood,in Portuguese).By the way,the first and most important production in Madeira in it's early days was sugar cane,very rare in all Europe(brought from Sicily)."Laurisilva" is the name of this particular tipe of forest,very rare this days.

Today, we try to preserve ourselves with cryogenic freezing. Perhaps in a few thousand years the people of that time will view us in the same way.
