I believe either on this or the London show around this time that Tom played two huge kettle drums while singing Pasties and a G-String...and he played them masterfully. I wish he'd do more on those drums...maybe in a local show, where the set-up would be easier....Note the slightly faster tempo on this song...Melody seems to fall on this man's mind like it did with Hoagy, Richard, Ira, Harold Arlen, and all the genius's from the past....he's in the light.
Misery loves company has never been more true for you tomhaters why are you here? You enjoy his expressions of pain depression, anger, and sorrow. Are you so sad that you cant be honest with yourself and say hey i can relate to that?Newfut what are you jealous envious which is it?Is it he talking about you or you talking about him thats talent.
Newfuturion- so you need a good knowledge of music history to be any good then do you? What a strange, phoney, pseudo-intellectual you are, talking garbage.
I have no problem with those that play the part of a cool, Beat-influenced hepcat, it's just that Waits is especially bad at it. A man of limited talents for those with limited imaginations and limited knowledge of the history of popular music.
Well..... you either have your tonge in your cheek (hopefully),Or your head up your ass(probably).
Tom Waits has pioneered contemporary music, turned the page so to speak, and should be listed with the likes of Charlie Parker, Bob Dylan, T. Monk, Mingus,Hendrix to name a few and as an equale his work is Genius. Listen to something beyond highschool pop, rap and headbanger crap.
Noodlemanrta--good ear. I think it is only slightly faster. Waits is said to be an anxious person (Jim Jaramusch). Sometimes anxiety causes even geniuses to talk or sing faster. Also, he may not have been using his regular bass viol player--a musical and percussion instrument that is critical to tempo, Good comment.
His latest triple CD 'Orphans, Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards' is as great as the man himself. His scene in 'Domino' was vintage Tom - acting and the song as well.
At the end of this beautiful song a few years back at the Wiltern I had pretty good seats on the floor, and during the last arpeggio piano run it was totally silent in the theater. Finally, a lone male voice from way up in the back ceiling hollered, "Thank you." Tom tipped his pork pie hat and it was moment that few of us Angelinos got to call our own. Peace, Tom.
This was my introduction to the consumate american story teller Mr. Tom Waits. Stumbled across it late one night on TV back in the early eighties...thank God!
Superb as always!

newfuturion, you are full of sh*t. If you were half as talented as waits you'd be famous through sheer talent..
