  • OK, sergei is great, but listen to Winton in Motto Perpetuo, does anybody can this?

  • haha the part is at 3:50

  • Comment removed

  • is that a monette prana?

  • 3:22 what the heck???

  • @musicalgenius98 really really fast slurs :D

  • Comment removed

  • posture

  • DAT TONE!!

  • It's amazing to see the thought process in development of solo's.. constructing ideas flowing them together and well just made me want to practice first thing in the morning!

  • and this is just warming up......damn!

  • how can you dislike a warm-up

  • @jjohnsontrumpet Haha really though! Folks just LOVE to HATE Wynton.

  • @kingoliver45 because Maynard Ferguson is better.

  • @jjohnsontrumpet 4 People showed you how :D

  • i own a trumpet so.... teach meh!!!

  • Just" thank you" for music !!!

  • i wasnt compariing Vizzutti to Brown it was to Marsalis! lol But lets face it the best technical virutuoso today is Sergei Nakariakov hands down. watch him play Hora Stacato and Carnival here on youtube unbelievable

  • @SRV1 Yes indeed. Not only is Sergei technically good, but he really lives the music. Probably one of the greatest if not the greatest musicians in the world.

  • Two people don't warm up.

  • i dare someone to transcribe this

  • @musicfreak115 Gimme a year or two.

  • now this is how you warm up!

  • I've got Clifford Brown rehearsing "Cherokee" on an old cassettetape. That`s even more amazing. But five stars for Wynton, because he is the man for this age.

  • @teemingup em i suggest you check out Allen Vizzutti hes 54 and wayy better.

  • @SRV1 dude he taught my friend and her WIBC band group

  • @lLaceration i suggest you watch Vizzutti play Carnival of Venus not Venice, Venus on here, and maybe listen to Maestro Heifitz Master classes on violin on here. He inspired his students to be better than they thought they could and, like Vizzutti was an anomoly. Trumpet is most like violin in style and technique and singing tone. Dr. Al Hirt (RIP) was best after Mendez and if you dont agree watch all his vids and educate yourself to him and Vizzutti

  • @SRV1 You mean Hirt is best technique after Mendez? I find that hard to believe. He played fast, but the clarity was not close to Mendez.

  • @SRV1 no

  • @SRV1 speed isn't everything, so I wouldn't agree that Vizzutti is better than Brown... two different time periods, and for the most part, two very different styles of music. They are both very good

  • @teemingup Find a way to post it up please!!

  • @ExternalTooth Yeah, I`m thinking... Don`t have a good cassettedeck anymore. Only squeeky old Walkman. I can hold my i.Phone to it and record the whole thing on Sound Cloud. Or a camerarecording that I put on You Tube. It will sound sooo bad. I mean as in low quality

  • @teemingup Well, if it's toooo bad then don't bother I guess... but I'd say that something is better than nothing, too. Your choice

  • aw... doesn't he do classical anymore? :)

  • wow

  • I must have watched this 25 times

  • What model of monette trumpet is he using.

  • what is he doing at 3:21 ? is that just a slur?

  • @theDarthh not technically a "slur" - he's lip-bending down below the natural range - does that answer it?

  • @knoxsummerour yes thanks.

  • enlightening, truly.

  • Listen to wee jimmy he has it sussed

  • Alright... I'd like some help. I'm your average high school player. I'm 1st chair so I'm usually playing C to C range. After we warm up and play a song, my lips are already feeling "soggy".... I get SO frustrated with this. Everyone else can play SO much longer than I can. What do I do? I really don't like "just practice".. PLEASE reply with a solution.

  • @frascht94 The answer is partially if not mostly, "just practice" (sorry!). The more you play the more your embouchure develops so getting in as much as possible is a huge help and just pushing a little further each time makes a difference. Other respondents may berate me for what I say next, however, the kit you use can make a huge difference, not least of all the shape of the mouthpiece, it may well be that your mouthpiece just doesn't sit well with your mouth / lip shape and form.

  • @frascht94 playing trumpet isn't a self-harm thing, get kit that works for you and tell those who tell you you're wrong to get stuffed ;)

  • WOW! Just amazing

  • @sopcornet111 yeah it was classical

  • When he does that shit...

  • @sopcornet111

yea I have had some ridiculously high notes and one in my solo so im scared that i will screw up the solo in the concert and look stupid XD but whatever. Just gotta keep practicing.

  • 1 person plays percussion.

    dislike bar.

  • 3:22 what is he doing???

  • @masterpiggy5 Lip slurs... but very much unlike most human beings...

  • this video is gold!

  • wtf hax

  • Posture is not everything :) perfect example :)

  • what were the intervals of the lip slurs?

  • "man you ever hear ryan (kisor, one of the longstanding members of the LCJO plays 3rd tpt i think) do that, boy he can play (unintelligible) unbelieveable... slurin'"? (continues with) "man you gotta hear when he does that shit its like, hip" (then vocally imitates it)

  • ladies n gentlemen, Wynton marsalis (applause)

  • guau... menudo maquina

  • Hola, ¿alguien sabe qué tamaño de boquilla utiliza Wynton?,Muchas Gracias...Hi, does anyone know what size nozzle used Wynton?I hope the answer, many thanks!

  • what type of scale is he using from 4:02 - 4:18 ? it sounds great

  • @skillfrombrazil I believe that's all concert Bb Locrian.

  • @Vitruvian42 Or rather (as a rough approximation): Concert A# Locrian, Concert G# Aeolian, Concert B Major.

  • @skillfrombrazil C Locrian scale - all the same notes as Db major. At 4:14 he plays a Bb minor idea into a Db major sound (all of which is still really within the key of Db major.)

  • No first slide saddle?

    interesting design choice.

  • @joe740544 Wynton always plays in tune no matter what.

  • This is a very helpful video and inspirational to me as a trumpet player. I've only seen Wynton performing pretty much flawlessly but it's interesting watching Wynton as any other trumpet player doing some warming up, checking the range with alternate fingerings, etc.... I really enjoyed it.

  • I love arpeggios, I can mess around all day playing nothing but arpeggios. And that day will be a full and complete productive day in my eyes LOL :)

  • really like 1:23

  • If only I could sound this good playing!!!

  • This can't be Wynton, I heard a cracked note!

  • what a boss!!! what a beast!!!

  • Translation: you suck at trumpet!

  • guys he not trying to play perfect he trying to get the whole mind body connect in a completely relaxed way....his fingers are working on their own accord. I think he is doing what Kenny Werner does all the time.

  • what the heck is he doing at 3:25?

  • @Omgshoes017 Covering Bitches Brew

  • @Omgshoes017 lip slurs

  • Are you people shure that this is warm up?? just wondering ??

  • I quit.

  • @BirdDizCC You may be right about the airy sound, but maybe because he is trying to play some of the high notes softly and I am pretty sure he is styling some of those notes, can't be certain though.

In any event, all I do is I just watch listen and learn. This was an excellent video to do just that. I am going to try and take some of what he was doing and incorporate that into practice.

  • @swmita I think the airy sound is from his equipment. I was talking to my teacher Darren Barrett yesterday about my B2S3 prana mouthpiece (I play on a Monette LTJ too) and how I sometimes get an airy sound when I dont want it. Its a great sound but I dont want it all the time. So yeah.

  • I love hows he's doing this all while laying back in a chair...

  • 3:22 is straight fire.

  • he uses a Monette B2S3 similar to a Bach 1-1/4 i think

  • @gnilre000 Yes thats correct I play a B2S3 as well.

  • @kingoliver45 does it help on range? and how much does it cost?

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that

cause at school i use the 7c mouthpiece but i cant play high notes that easy cause i got my braces off and my teeth feel all weird

so if i get a smaller mouth piece will i be able to play higher?

  • @sparkyak213 No. Do not use a smaller mouthpiece. The size of your mouthpiece will not help you play higher. Its all about relaxation and a good air flow. My mouthpiece is the same size as wyntons which is much larger than a 7c. My best advice is to find the best trumpet teacher in your city and just learn as much as you can. Im not sure how old you are or what kind of playing you do or any of that so I suggest you ask your band director or Trumpet teacher. I had braces too!It sucked! Good luck!

  • @kingoliver45 hey thanks! im 15 and our class got new pieces: William Tell and Prelude and Fugue.

one more question: does what you eat make a difference before you play because my class is in the morning so when i eat breakfast and then play a few hours later my embouchure doesnt feel warmed up, so is it because im not warmed up or is it because what i ate for breakfast like the sugars in my mouth is affecting my playing?

  • @kingoliver45 Ummmm, the size does matter. The small the cup size, the higher you will go. It will just make you have an amateur sound.

  • @kingoliver45 in saying that a smaller mouth piece can help i was playing on a larger mouth piece, which was too big for me and i have changed to a smaller one.. it's not drastically smaller but it has helped my playing as the air flow is more directed. @sparkyak213 you should definitely talk you your teacher before changing mouth pieces or making any drastic changes to your playing :)

  • @sparkyak213 don't get a cheater mouthpiece. stay with a 7C or 3C.

  • @sparkyak213 Smaller mouthpieces WILL help. But the the other comment on your post is also true, that its about a good air flow, tongue placement and what not. But the smaller/shallower mouthpiece DOES help play high notes. It's just not the only thing that helps.

  • @sparkyak213 a smaller mouthpiece would just make your mouth feel more weird and it would help play higher but not by much just practice on the higher octave if you need to play higher. I started then got braces then got them off then got bars on the back of my teeth then i got a retainer then my teeth shifted so i got a different retainer to shift my teeth back and i am still first chair at my school.

  • @sparkyak213 7c is the beginner's mouth peice. I sometimes have trouble getting out a double f out on that, but I use a 3a. That's a typical high schooler's mouth piece.

  • @sparkyak213 Smaller mouthpieces NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Bigger mouth piece so you can put more air though it.

smaller mouth piece means you cant put as much air through it so its harder to play higher notes.

  • @sparkyak213 Hey man

take it from me, the pursuit of mouthpieces shouldn't be about giving you some kind of magic answer to higher notes. There isn't an easy answer to higher notes. I suppose I can tell you focus on ease of airstream, but really what you need to do is practice in that register with the intent of figuring out the easiest way to make those notes come out. Nick Drozdoff talks about it on youtube. look him up.

  • @sparkyak213 Get something shallower. It compromises the sound a little but helps u play higher

  • @sparkyak213 Eventually you may want to move to a 5c. It won't make you better though, just like buying a more expensive trumpet won't make you better. It's all about practice.

  • @sparkyak213 I dIsagree with the kannggg ;) smaller mouthpieces will definately let you play higher with less effort. I went smaller as i went and have thinner lips like Chet Baker and he played a 6 and 10.5 c I play even smaller such as a GR 62.5 SZ and 11 3/4 bach mt vernon and Selmer 1 A at .590 diamter/ Get yourself a Giardinelli 17 M on ebay for around 22 bucks you will love it and great rim! or the cushion rim bach (CW) in 10.5 or smaller. you wont regret it!

  • @SRV1 That statement is VERY misleading. If youre air intake and release is "off" that automatically will not let you play high. Not just that but tension all throughout the body. I cant play high and have tried EVERY mouthpiece size. Its true that there is a right size but to say that the smaller the mouthpiece the higher is bullshit

    Austin Casey (Kingoliver45)

  • don't make ur trumpet a lamp just practice alot that greats stuff man give me something to build on love i!!

  • He does not use feature three piston

    Smalssssssssssss

  • astounding!! words fail ....and me likes to tell it as it is man? Wynton is a ftyer ....up and out of the stratosphere!

  • Wow! I love the different sounds he gets out of the horn and the accents he puts in there is really cool too. That is really inspirational....I think I'm going to go 'shed now

  • his sound is not brassy at all. amazing.

  • what is he doing @ 3:25?

  • Im 16 years old, and when I saw him last night, I was watching Ali Jackson on the drums, then I looked and Wynton was looking right at me and smiled and nodded to me. Very Awesome.

  • Wow 14k views of a man just warming up. That's incredible lol. His warming up still sounds like God compared to my rehearsed shit.

  • Wynton warming up sounds better then my best playing

  • clipped a note @ 1:52 nice to hear even Wynton does it sometimes

  • His low notes are powerful.

  • Could anyone please, please, please tell me what he is saying at about 3:46 until he starts playing again??? Please!!!

  • @PrincessAmelica "You ever heard Ryan (Kisor) do that? Man its just unbelievable. Slurring. Man you gotta hear him he does that shit its like, it. It's clean"

  • @kingoliver45 thank you soooooooooo much!!!!

  • Great command of the instrument and jazz.

  • Thanks for sharing... cool it has been filmed from the side so that one can see the valving (-:

  • Thanks for sharing this! Fantastic-

  • 0:52 - woahhhhhhh

  • Where is some of this type of fast warm up written down/(or similar material) I'd like to try some of it, but not sure where to start. Any suggestions?

  • @MrMrsCorvette I think he's just improvising around a tonal center (A-6). You can hear him "airball" occasionally which is why he plays softly to start. It gets the aperture to be as small as possible creating better response and control. What exactly do you mean when you say, "fast warmup"?

  • @MCroach1 Thank you for answering. I am referring to the faster notes part of the warmup; Also, what is "airball"? and do you mean A (Major scale) and the 6th above it? I do various warmu ps from Mel Bay's Trumpet Handbook and Clark's Technical studies. I'm a bit of a rookie in all these things. Thanks for your help!

  • @MrMrsCorvette Ok. To clarify: Wynton is improvising while throwing in a few good practice techniques like, arpeggios, scales, lip trills, etc. I think what you are referring to is what he's doing while he's still playing in the A-6 mode towards the beginning. A-6 means "A" Minor 6. The minus sign means a minor quality to the chord or altered tension. If I wrote A7-9 that would mean "A" Dominant 7 with a lowered 9th scale degree. Remember, he is improvising when playing his warmup. It's not

  • @MCroach1 Thank you for the details! In addition to the work with clark's studies, I have been working on Flight of the Bumblebee. They go nicely together.

  • @MrMrsCorvette Written down.

  • @MrMrsCorvette Wynton is just playing around and improvising his warm up. You might want to try some Clarkes etudes at to speed.

  • @orjazzmicintentions Thank you! The etudes in his tech studies are a challenge. I will try them!

  • @MrMrsCorvette I have been working with etudes from Clark's Technical studies. Great stuff.

  • @BirdDizCC Haha thanks a lot man. Good luck to you too!

  • @BirdDizCC I sure am. watching that man play is so inspiring. Trying to strive for that kind of playing ability is like reaching for the stars, it's impossible but it's worth a try anyway right? :P

  • @BirdDizCC He is definitely doing it for style. haha He has an amazing full dark tone when he does classical stuff.

  • wow. i really dig this

  • lip trill ?? 3:50/..?? trill killer..

  • Finally a video of this great player (Wynton Marsalis), by himself. No drums, ect. Now for a guy my age (26), this is real music to the ears.

  • @somedude8403 Yes indeed!

  • @somedude8403 Don't you dare talk smack about Dan Nimmer and Ali Jackson.

  • @BirdDizCC he's using a monette horn those things are expensive like 8 to ten grand lol

  • @BirdDizCC You're correct, but I think it was just strictly during warmup. Maybe with the camera's microphone being that close and in a small room has some to do with that.

  • just want to melt my trumpet and make it into a lamp after that

  • @gweest10692 haha I know how you feel

  • @gweest10692 Just play man. It'll get to where it goin...

  • Well.... I don't have anything to say or play after that!
