  • for me, music is pretty much just another language. learning the notes on the music is like learning new vocab and meaning each time. performing is just like a speech. if he had no facial expressions howsoever, it's pretty much the same as a person giving a speech in a monotone type of voice. so don't make fun of his face while he plays. he doesnt fake it either. i'm a musician myself and people would make fun of my facial expressions too but i don't care, i don't wanna perform meaningless music

  • Shame, If he was born a girl his facial expressions would be awesome. Just saying.

  • Reminds me how important pedaling skills are...

  • Oh, I guess to me "live" is used in pop music for performances that significantly differ from studio recordings: poor acoustics, audience making noise, lack of ability to layer the same artist's voice, no MIDI etc. This was recorded by professional mics carefully placed on the piano, dead silent audience, perfect acoustics, etc. In other words, this is how all classical recordings are made, so unless we want to call practically all classical cd's live, we shouldn't call some live.

  • Excellent performance and recording. Not sure I'd call it 'live' though.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • @gvfarns Isn't it live? Could you elaborate?

  • This is a great interpretation. I like it! Let's talk about music not his facial expression. If you don't want to see him, you can scroll down, and just listen to the music.

  • if i was the director, I would have framed just the hands and not his fucking facial expressions

  • Solutions to enjoying the music in spite of facial expressions:

    1. Close your eyes. Difficulty:EASY

    2. Try to enjoy in the way he does. Difficulty:MEDIUM

    3. Get over it. Difficulty:HARD (based on all the comments left complaining about his facial expressions!!)

  • playing the piece itself is hard. And you only have your face left to tell the story.

  • another great fang fang. And I mean that in a good way. Lang lang is awesome

  • My favorite interpretation iv'e yet heard! He inspired me to learn the sonata and play it in my LTCL recital in ONE WEEK I'm getting excited YAY

    Well done Lang Lang

  • Great performance

  • He is having fun ffs, that's what playing music should be about!

  • 0:26 retard!

  • Bravissimo*****

    Very high performance

  • i've never seen someone enjoy Haydn so much ^^

  • wow bravo i love it sonata ..i play tomorrow it

  • Music is not only to heard... :)

  • Hes a greatly skilled pianist, but a terrible interpreter. Haydn must be turning over in his grave. Its not Lang Lang's Sonata in C; its Haydns sonata in C and should be played exactly as Haydn wrote it

  • @ModellMeister May be he should put in the concert programs "Lang Lang Sonata in C", that way you would be happier?

  • @stacattos Yes, as clearly this is not Haydn. This is a lang lang ripoff of Haydn (like what Samsung always does to other phones)

  • Do not worry about looks and gestures, more than that, it's about the orgasm, the sensation of entering deep into the music. Superb

  • so good.

  • i prefer lang lang's reactions over some dead faced piano player there to make money..

  • ...some of the people are saying here, because this is not Romantic rep. say Chopin or Liszt, LL literally is denied the opportunity to make a total asshole of himself, the discipline the Haydn classicist style imposes makes him sound sort of OK...well, what LL does, he TRIVIALIZES your Haydn for you...so he still finds a way to fuck this up...hey, remember, this is not just ANYBODY...this is your fucking Lang Lang...

  • EXCEPT romantic composers I think I'm gonna listen to more Lang Lang.

  • This performance is amazing for Lang lang, I was expecting having to turn this off after seeing all the rather too eccentric playing he usually does. Very good performance I must admit.

  • Even when I saw him Live

  • Hm, again I must say Lang Lang isn't my favourite pianist... It just doesn't feel right :L

  • As much as I wholehertedly despise the way this man clowns about while playing, I have to say this is one of the better performances by him. It just might be good because he's actually not waving his hands around as if trying to fend off bloodthirsty waves of mosqitoes trying to eat him alive.

Sure, his terrible fake mannerisms still ruin the experience for me unless I stick to just listening rather than watching him. But, yeah, I like this performance nevertheless.

  • What are you all talking about. This man obviously loves playing and :I think his interpretation is wonderful. Watch his hands, listen to the interpretation and enjoy!

  • Wonderful!!!!!!!! Maravilhoso!!!!!!!! 素晴らしい!!!!!很好!!!!

  • Someone fuckin' name me a famous historical musician that wasn't a little insane.

  • @Nisosauce so true! have you read stories about early composers? pretty crazy

  • This is brilliant.

  • Exceptionnel Lang Lang.....il s'exprime comme il le sent, il est dans un autre monde et ça ne peut rendre la musique que meilleure.......amazing Lang Lang!!

  • @qianqra92

So you woudn't like to hear me play huh. whats wrong with the way i play. u haven't even heard me play

  • @zy3 Even though i dont like lang lang that much i support him because his facial expressions means that he is enjoying the music and they add emotion

  • Tremendous Control, but a piece of the classical period such as this one should never be played with such tempo differences.

  • His face is hysterical! Here is a man communicating with the music he is playing, as if it were an old friend. Love it

  • bravo

  • Bravo!

  • Bravo!

  • ...he is so Lang Lang, he is so full of himself, and so little interested in what the composer really was after...but we get so much of the "proper Haydn" all over the Tube, so some of THAT is not so bad...but after a little while it does get tiresome, the Haydn just died, Mr. Lang Lang just killed him, I guess...

  • I don't like the way how those chinese play. There is no "πάθος"...

  • @giangra92

Just wondering...what do you mean by "those chinese"?

  • @pianocookie11 Chinese pianists.

  • @giangra92

Well is there something wrong with the way I play the piano?

  • @pianocookie11 I don't know I have never heard you playing. And statistically, men play better than women! :O

  • there's no expression in music,so he put the expression on his face!

  • @bosseed

Like your expression is from your arse i.e. your face

  • Technically very good, some interesting ideas, but for me Lang Lang's interpretation of Haydn isn't on par with the likes of Alfred Brendel, Ronald Brautigam and Ingrid Haebler. Will be interesting to see how his interpretation develops as he gets older.

  • awesome!

  • hahahaha carnegle holl

  • he feel the music.

  • Lang Lang expresses the humor and philosphical detachment of Haydn perfectly. Haydn wasn't a second-grade Mozart, he was great in his own right!

Great articulation and tempo for this rhymically difficult sonata.

  • guys dont be so harsh towards his facial expressions -.- it just shows that he is into the music and that he is genuinely enjoying the music! As a piano player myself, it actually makes me enjoy the performance even more, because you dont have to worry about the performer feeling nervous about the whole thing! If I had to choose between a performenr who shat themselves whenever they were on stage, and a performer who looks like they enjoy it, I WOULD COOHSE THE LATTER!!!!! :) just saying tho...

  • @melkerr1 I agree, when I get on stage it gets a little scary, I think that when he does these facial expressions he is sort of lettlin out some of those butterflies. And if you forget what I am talking about the video is, Lang Lang: Hadyn Sonata in C (part 1)

  • @melkerr1 good musicians can express themselves through the music, they don't need to do it with fake drama faces. just saying..

  • @melkerr1 Many use facial expressions and grandiose gestures to help themselves feel the music or because the music is moving them so deeply. That being said, Lang Lang's facial expressions and movements seem very contrived.

  • I hardly appreciate Lang Lang's performance - in fact, vary hardly - but this is indeed an exquisite interpretation. Bravo!

  • since when did facial expressions mean a fucking thing in regards to piano playing?

  • @zy3 he's just enjoying the music. his facial expressions show that he isn't nervous and enjoys it.

  • why do you all have a problem with his facial expressions? i think its cool, hes unique :)

  • technique isn't everything....especially in music

  • Lang Lang has ejaculated at 4:25.

  • In a some kind of way it is very fun to see an asian playing european pieces better than europeen musicians :D Asians are taking over the world! yay! :D

  • O lang lang viaja DEMAIS

  • Lang Lang is a virtuose of the quality of Cziffra and Liszt. He probably has the best technique ever in history. At the same time he is a playful mammal of the species homo sapiens sapiens, who makes fun of trying-hard-to-look-serious-and-prestigious-dumm-people. For this reason there is a never ending conversation with silly arguementation and the unavoidable vague characteristics of criticism in art. I adore his sarcasm.

  • @Louxorios "Best technique ever in history" is a strong sentence...

  • Fuck!!

  • he's like a character in the story. amazing!

  • amazing fingers

  • Why such criticism of Lang Lang's expressions and gyrations when the end result is so exciting and alive? Thirty years ago as a Juilliard student, such excessive emotion was discouraged, to the detriment of the truly involved musician. The brilliant Glenn Gould defied that staid tradition and was lambasted roundly for his mannerisms. Yet popular musicians can make truly obscene gestures and not be faulted. Lighten up! Lang Lang is one the best pianists today. The classics live!!!

  • @nikkitytom You now realize you are defending both Lang Lang and Glenn Gould.

    hahaohwow.jpg

  • @nikkitytom I quite agree

  • @nikkitytom I agree with you

  • @nikkitytom

i was critical of his facial expressions at he got famous, but i heard his beethoven concerti and thought they were really quite good to excellent. The facial expressions tend to bug us because it makes us feel like we need the music explained to us, when we don't. Gould's noise making and rocking was subconscious, this is more of a calculated act, that doesn't need to be done, in my view.

  • Wonderful phrasing and performance.

  • Orientals aren't typically a photogenic lot, eh? lol

  • @winrx Well they're usually the ones doing the picture so it's okay

  • I always go to enjoy Chicago Symphony Ochestra's 10 bucks student tickets. In the concert hall, it is really hard to see the performer's facial expression except you sit on the first row or you equip a telescope (which I did...=.=...). Langlang's body movement is very natural. Thus, without seeing his facial expression clearly, people were attracted by his performance and natural body movement. His performances have music power that really impress people. Go to hear his live, you will enjoy it!

  • I think his facial expressions are a direct reflection of the way the piece feels to him, and therefore give us a better representation of the composition. The reason it sounds so great is because he is being the piece physically, emotionally, and technically. Great performance, three thumbs up, hope he comes to L.A. soon.

  • @theoldseaside I agree completely. Also, the way he is able to make those faces, shows how comfortable and at home is is with the piece, he is clearly concentrating, but his movements also seem like they have become VERY much second nature.

  • AMAZING FLYING FINGERS. :O

  • An unusual Lang Lang performance, as he plays in a very mild-mannered style - then again, he is playing one of the most delightful piano sonatas. It's nice to see Lang Lang show his skills properly. And amazing, no need for excessive hand motions, a pianist can be amazing with out!

  • All these people complaining about his facial expressions.. big deal! you dont need to look at him in order to enjoy the sonata, Even richter himself turned off the lights in some concerts so people wouldnt see him and listen instead. This is not a circus, its a piano performance, listen!

  • i love listening to him playing and watching his fingers movements... :-)

but i cant help myself, his facial expression to me seems so unnatural just as if he had practiced it while watching Mr. Bean .... :-(

  • :) his cheeks jiggle like crazy

  • nice facial expressions.....

  • if anyone has as much fun as he's having, there would be many facial expressions.

  • 0:42 wtf is he looking at?

  • why make all this facial expressions? the music spokes itselves... I think that isn´t necesary.,.,.

  • @leoalpiano dont look at him and listen.

  • Exceptionnel! Il rend hommage à Haydn...Et prend du plaisir, comme le compositeur l'aurait très certainement voulu. Et ceux qui n'aiment pas ses expressions faciales, fermez les yeux et profitez de la musique.

  • Some musicians who make ugly facial expressions really knows what is happening in the music: he is one of them

  • @santgil lol that's quite amusing, I play this song (of course not to the level of mastery that Lang Lang possesses) and I try to mimic his facial expressions because it's just so funny to do so =D

  • 好中意!

  • @lindayui03 was ??

  • @lindayui03 was ?? Kan you germanay ??

  • i enjoy his gestures. get over yourself and you will enjoy his performance too

  • 1:07 make me wish I could reach into the internets and slap this guy.

  • classical style doesn't fit him u.u

  • This interpretation is a new explanation of Haydns sonata. Wonderful !!!

  • Absolutely wonderful, totally expressive!!! His facial expressions convey all the emotion of this piece. He completely destroys all those jealous idiots who moan about Chinese pianists being all technique and having little or no emotion.

    Bravo Lang Lang!!!

  • @totalrelaxation i agree with you,his facial expressions do fit with funny and beautiful music of Haydn, fuck people, who critisise Lang Langs face mimics

  • I don't have a problem with his facial expressions. It's his way of expressing his love and enjoyment of the music. There's nothing wrong with that, and who are we to say otherwise? Music is meant to be listened to, why are we so bent on what he looks like while playing it?

  • The 22 people who missed the like button saw Lang Lang's face but not his talent >.<

  • Comment removed

  • It's so nervous......... listening to it makes me feel very uneasy. All the arpeggios sound like a roaring machine gun rather than a harp.

Not to mention that he doesn't keep up the insanely fast tempo in which he started the piece. Compare for instance 0:11 with 1:59. I mean, this is a piece by Haydn not by Schumann...

Oh, and before you give me a trillion thumbs down, let me tell you that I don't hate L.L. I like many of his performances indeed, but I try to be objective...

  • Sublime !!!

  • He's good.

  • lovely, the face, a bit cartoony, but i really enjoy the playing, he's just having fun i guess, naturally.

  • i like how this is in C major xD

  • Very elegant Haydn playing... enjoying it a lot more than I usually do his playing.

  • Phenomenal! and so happy!!

  • I like his face ;D

  • where is Carnegle holl again?

  • @Theluc113 fkin practicing... its hard... and its very tempting not to practice and do more fun stuff.. but if you wanna be a true musician and be famous.. that's what you HAVE to do !

  • making all thoes expressionnnnnssss make me want to rofl alot!!

  • VERY GREAT!!!

  • I never thought Hayden was interesting at all, until this video! His phrasing at the beginning just captured my attention, so well done!

  • Seems like a nice guy to be honest. Not saying this condescendingly, but if you just forget your ego a second you can enjoy his facial expressions.

  • this guy is so cool! i'm getting pretty tired of hearing people bitch about his face. it's getting a little cliche. i find it refreshing to see a classical musician who actually has fun for a change instead of being an uptight piano snob. i actually think his expressions are quite fitting along with the music he plays. it makes him seem like a noblemen, and it goes along with the period that the music was written.

  • note perfect

  • One must be be a totally illiterate asshole not to admit that this kid englobes and surpasses all period interpretation literature in this extremely sophisticated interpretation.

  • magazine said he didn't make progress in performing skills but do make it on face show...lol ; besides, he really should transfer to dramma school....

  • I personally think that his playing is awesome, but his facial expression in 1:09 is kind of weird.

  • @ahnslvchrist 2:00 as well

  • Lang Lang is pretty good when he's not playing Liszt.

  • The more I listen to this and compare it with the written score and other recordings, the more the same word comes out of my mouth: AMAZING. So much colour, so much drama, entertainment and sheer elegance. LL got it spot on with the 1st movement.

  • He's double of Mr bean? haha

  • wow. amazing performance.

    interesting facial expressions though...

  • @bananapark14 yea, those Lang Lang facial expressions just make me wanna punch that guy in the face eh?

  • this commentary refers to this interpretation, specifically!:

his control, large dinamic range, remembers me of mr. horowitz... its rare, nowadays a pianist with his dinamic possibilities. he, as horowitz, plays gently, no worries, he listens the music he is playing.

  • Can't bear his disgusting facial expressions, but the music is awesome. He has a lot of great ideas, his control is beyond criticism. After all a great performance

  • @Refamire30 stop talking about his facial expressions you dumb moron.

  • @Refamire30 he's just into the music, something you wouldn't know about. because you're probably not even a good musician, for if you were you would stop being such a foolish critic

  • @Refamire30 lawl. Thanks to your comment, now I won't be able to look at another Lang Lang video without laughing my head off at his expressions. XD

  • @Refamire30 controlling your facial expressions is quite impossible beyond a certain level of pleasure ;]

  • @Refamire30 when ur really in tune with the music and u love it, ur face should reflect the emotion of the piece once u practice it enough and ur hands have completely muscle memorized it.

  • @Refamire30 ikr! his face looks so weird! lol

  • @Refamire30 ikr! his face looks so weird! lol, he's like smiling the whole time! EVIL SMILE!

  • Awesome!!!!

  • To my mind Lang Lang is a superb musician. I am not bothered by the showmanship, even if he does sometimes seem to be mugging for the camera. Just my humble opinion.

  • Great!

  • Understand that the interpretations that are presented, are presented with/to the modern day ear, and on modern day instruments.

  • I listened to this first movement without watching the video. The most important thing missing from Lang's performance is a sense of structure. He doesn't repeat the exposition, and the development section is played too ho-hum, considering that it is one of Haydn's longest of the sonatas. There are also rhythmic silences which seem unconvincing, as of Lang were imitating a tradition without really feeling it.

  • Perhaps "structure" is misunderstood for "length" or "convention", since in this witty and eloquent interpretation there appears to be both a fine sense of musical structure alongside a fresh and rather inspirational feeling for the clarity and style of Haydn's writing.

It is interesting to mull over just how difficult it is to clear one's mind of expectation and preconception, even without the video influence.

  • Well, I am currently playing this and listened to it with the score. The main criticism is the incoherent tempo, but in terms of structure this is actually as good as it gets. The "rhythmic silences" you mention are actually very accurate if you check the score. Apart from that, you have to acknowledge that it sounds like someone is having a lot of fun in a Mozartian way but with a fairly distinct pose - as Haydn as it gets. Props to Lang Lang for bringing that out.

  • Me too - I'm playing this as well xD.

I listen it with the score as well.

Lang Lang is playing it quite well or really good depends on people's opinions.

  • Give Lang Lang Costume and scene setups and he will play an act while playing that's for sure!

I'm amazed that he can feel so natural on the piano, even though there is such a huge pressure on him.

  • This is so great!

  • Oh, and by the way: this performance is really amazing. REALLY amazing.

  • if you ask many professional piano players including chinese ones, they would say that lang lang show off too much

  • @TheCheesyProductions

excuse me did I miss anything?

Isn't Concert supposed to be a show off??

In the first "level" of the show you at least have to hide you nerves about the performance even that is showoff..

Even Franz Liszt was showing off.. He by the way loved to show off.. and he is also known for being the best.. I know the aspect contains more like technique too but think about it!

  • @VSKCREW

well you see lang lang shows off way too much

many piano teachers such as mine say that he is really good at piano, but he exaggerates the showing off part

he's gotten better now, since he had grown up more, but like 3 years ago, he's crazy at showing off

  • people are so cantankerous when it comes to lang lang... If this had been any other pianist he'd have 5 stars, this piece is played to the fullest, let me challenge you to sit back and enjoy this Haydn sonata and not get distractet by your prejudices.

  • Spot on! Brilliant performance. What do we care if the performer is Chinese, American, European, smiles, laughs or tries to walk around the room?? Enjoy the music, people - that's what it is all about.

  • Is anybody here that understand something of piano ?

What is all that shit about tempo

is normal that it's complitely free left to the interpretation of the player and i mean it's veri cool that he interpretate with is face what he's plaiyn'!

Then we must think he's very young and nowaday is very imprtant to have people like this!!!

  • yikes everyone is so negative!

  • I "hate" him as much as any Lang-Lang hater out there. However, what in the world happened to this guy? He is utterly transformed! He is playing a modern grand piano here, but one can almost "hear" the punchy pianoforte coming out. I can't deny any longer that Lang-Lang is a master of this instrument.

  • So, Mr. Pianisteny2k, would you please explain about why he missed connection between DO and the lower DO in the third bar, in the left hand?

  • Thank you for a VERY intresting opinion

  • In haydn music moving is very important. He does not control tempo.

  • I think Lang Lang knows what's important in Haynd, really, and even though he uses some rubato, he keeps the tempo. You don't have to be all strict, and never ever lose t tempo.
