It had to be... they didn't have as good a team of engineers to design it back then so it was designed to withstand far more then it would realistically need to. That bomber penetrated the wall too. It was moving at 1/3 the speed and weighed about half as much as a boeing 767. Did I mention the empire state building was much sturdier then the WTC?

The steel on the outer walls of the towers was an inch thick and held together with bolts and rivets. The bolts and rivets gave way upon impact and the steel was simply pushed aside. It had to be... they didn't have as good a team of engineers to design it back then so it was designed to withstand far more then it would realistically need to. That bomber penetrated the wall too. It was moving at 1/3 the speed and weighed about half as much as a boeing 767. Did I mention the empire state building was much sturdier then the WTC?

The steel on the outer walls of the towers was an inch thick and held together with bolts and rivets. The bolts and rivets gave way upon impact and the steel was simply pushed aside. By the way wing tips are not that fragile... remember they have to bear the entire weight of the plane in flight and endure the most force from turbulance.
