When I first saw it I thought it was just a entertaining ancient roman sword and sandles epic. However over the years with each more viewing you see more in the film you didn't see before.Ridley Scott only made two movies that were masterpieces of cinema one was blade runner the other is Gladiator.Gladiator deals with many themes, political intrigue, the bread and circus entertainment for the masses of Gladiatorial combat, End of the roman empire etc etc.

Two things that keep this movie from being perfect:

Connie Nielsen sucks, and the movie needed a big battle at the end. I wanted to see Maximus return with his army, even if I had to sit through a 4th act, lol. But, I don't fault Scott for the ending, the movie had to end they way it did, except for the his comrade in the end who could not bury the clay figures deeper. Dude, get a gardening trowel.
