  • what is the name of the lecturer and where is the lecture please? thanks for this video. (wish the sick people had watched the video instead of spreading their cough.. ;) )

  • @birgitdeubner got it. Alan Macfarlane and Cambridge.

    sorry for cluttering.

  • WTF, is everyone in this class terminally ill ?

  • "Aristotle hated democracy ...He was in modern terms reactionary" ... I have no doubt that none of today's so called "modern" universities would ever employ Aristotle. He was not such a spineless, corrupt and politically correct opportunist as so many of our professors and the academia in general. He lived in ancient Greece where freedom to think was not yet strangled and didn't degnerate into nauseating PC Orthodoxy of today.

  • Quoting Aristotle in this context is wrong. What is meant by "το ζώoν πολιτικόν" is not "'political animal" as he suggests but "someone belonging to a polis-a Greek city-state".Those who dοdn't live in a polis are barbarians.Especially Oriental nations subject to despotism and knowing no higher Greek culture are just born slaves to him.Few things could be also more opposite to Aristotle's "ζώoν πολιτικόν" than today's large bureaucraticized states and their subjects.

  • @Roelandvinken Don't use the term paradigm shift, it is insipid.

  • @Roelandvinken Fair enough, I maintain that "paradigm shift" is insipid.

  • view of the novice historian=me! :) 6:17...."Communist Systems"........if the original November revolution had not been hijacked by the criminal Octoberist's led by Lenin and Stalin, then other Marxist governments may not have been so incompetent. Entire state infrastructures could have been preserved. as was intended by the Real Revolutionaries! the righteous silenced by idiocy! jeez, factory workers in government office!! how blind and careless!! but thats what Lenin wanted! the twit!

  • och! the wee beasties and theyre coughin! ........anyway, if you put 50 modern people on an island. soon you will have a totally primitve society. the alpha male and female and theyre followers, will claim half the island with the fresh water and good soil, and the weaker ones will brood amongst themselves in the crappy part of the island, planning revenge. and so begins mini-tribal war! like the Helots hitting back against the cruel and domineering Spartans!

  • could somebody please pass these people some lozenges?

  • Events need at least debates over evidence, not authorized, before they can be documented as history. Honestly, our current dogma of history is just politics and they are not ours and are not belong to facts. Who can re-investigate the events of 9/11 and its investigations. Educators as well as those investors of eduction today are just wasting the time and life of our children. They are very Intellectual Properties agenda, the liars industry for the big corp. cash/labor cheating economy.

  • I share a similar view on educators. It's somewhat different, however in universities. In Universities the professors are chosen based on their publications, which I think is a mistake. Being an educator and being an intellect are two different things. They are not necessarily traits that one has to chose between. However, universities have a role to play in society and tend to disregard the professor's duty to the students. There are professors who can accomplish both, though rare they are in #

  • WOW the coughing. wow. wtf teh coughs about

  • faKE!!!

  • very othodox lecture, but its perhaps for first year students, (its really a history of the west)

  • Was this recorded in a tuberculosis ward? All the coughing makes the instructor (already at low volume) extremely difficult to hear.

  • I know it must have been in the winter...I wouldn't have got out my bed with a cold to listen to this rambling presentation
