@greenfish88 In the central position, it's a 'straight' pickup sound. I.e. the signal goes from the pickup, to the volume pot and to the output jack. Up and down are two different levels of high frequency (brightness) roll off. Up is a light roll off, down is a medium roll off. Alot of Gretsch recordings are done with it in the middle and, generally, alot of players don't move it from the center.
