  • A jazz act that,at times, was out of this world, and yet, at other times, was out to lunch. Their cover of "Boy From New York City" was good; I don't think this lived up to that. Sorry!

  • @kja427 You've obviously NOT heard the Extensions album.

  • GREAT performance..I LOVE you Janis!!

  • Greatest hits record I have says song is called Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone.

  • the best song!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Iove MT When they mention Mr Miller had a red light light. i think of my grandfather. Mr Miller

  • i think they did a great job

  • beautiful

  • Probaly their best song ever - fantastic performance. Thanks for posting.

(also check out Boy From NY City) (remove the space in the URL before .com))

  • @wch1tv Birdland! A Nightengale Sang In Berekley Square! Operator! Tuxedo Junction! GREAT songs for their rspective genres..

  • I had the good fortune to hear them live in a concert tour some years ago. I do not regret the cost of the ticket, parking, or the aspirin for staying up too late that night and getting up too early to the throb of a headache the next day. They put on a truly awesome show.

  • This sounds really difficult

  • fantastic, extraordinary document!

  • I have only two words for you...JANIS SIEGEL!

FUCK! Is that Pat Metheny on the Telecaster?????

  • @SoreBakka That's Mike Stern on the Telecaster

  • @cabriel Thanks.

  • Consumate professionals. Too bad there aren't any class acts like this around anymore.

  • Heard this on the radio this morning - BBC R2- for the first time since Spring 1980. Had a few seconds of it on a tape cassette...couldn't find it on youtube as I din't know who sang it, or what it was called. Thanks for posting this great song...great memories too.

  • Actually the full title(According to my CD sleeve) is Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone. So technically both titles are right.

  • Why does this remind me of Klaus Nomi's Total Eclipse. I saw MT twice in the early eighties. Brilliant.

  • 6 prople are lost in the Twilight Zone.

  • A time machine is a sphere that can break the speed of light.

  • Modern Dada

  • marvelous. One awaits music of the same.

  • ive met them

  • They are so cool!

  • When was this recorded?

  • If memory serves me...this song was on the "B" side of "Boy from New York City"......I have it (somewhere) on 45rpm record (Atlantic Records Label)...

  • thank you manhattan transfer for giving us very good music. today's artists are unbelievably unfascinating!

  • Gawd, I love Manhattan Transfer...more than I like ABBA...and that's saying alot.

  • What ever happened to this girl? I remember hearing this song in every dinky disco wanna be bar back in the day.

  • @jcross21 cheryl something. she had a solo album, im guessing amazon has it for a dime by now.

  • first of all, what a voice! As for dissonance, that's all in the chart. The guitarist flurbs a couple of notes, but he's grinning about it, and we should too. it'z live, you know?

  • This is one of my ABSOLUTE favorites!

I think I almost played a hole right through that album!

  • I prefer the performance on the album. The sound quality in this clip doesn't do them justice.

  • Song got a lot of play here in LA in 1980...

  • One of my favorite bands. Every record sounded different and four great vocalists. Cant stand todays artists. These are proper singers.

  • @mal2pool My only argument with you is calling them singers. There are lots of singers. These are musicians. Big difference.

  • Rod Serling is smiling from above. MT can be high camp, but the vocals are so very tight. Way cool!

  • The title is actually "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone", so both parties are almost right... I remember to have watched it written like this in Billboard's Hot 100

  • It IS Twilight Tone, not zone....

  • I loved listening to the Manhattan Transfer.

  • これぞ、一流。

  • I heard this song for the first time today and thought it was just great, a really amazing song. But I like "weird" music and singers with wide vocal range and strong portmento / tremolo ability. To usually hear this kind of weird stuff I'd listen to Mister Bungle.

  • Sounds better on vinyl although Cheryl is pretty good at belting out the 'LIVE'ditties...

  • For me this song is one of the best of MT and the guitar work is really good

  • Actually the title of the song is "Twilight Tone"

  • @odantoro

Shut up. Shut up! Shut up!

  • @odantoro Actually , you wrong... the title is "TWILIGHT ZONE/ TWILIGHT TONE"

  • @odantoro actually it's "Twilight Zone / Twilight Tone"

  • @odantoro

Actually its 'Twilight Zone', just saying, correcting your correction of the correct title!

  • Go to Dailymotion for the studio take

  • I like the radio release version much better,It's got the twin lead solo And a much fuller sound altogether. Plus the Vocals are much much better! The Studio Version is probally on my space

  • Bernard Herrmann's Twilight Zone Theme is more eerie regardless.

  • i am don a jazz dance 2 dis n it is so wierd.

  • In The ZzooneEEee.....

  • zzZzz0ooO0Ooo0nnee!!!!

  • zzZzzoo0OOoo0OOo0OoNnneeeeE

  • here in the....youtube zoOoO0Oone.....

  • Hhahhahaha what a happy night: i've been searching for this song and author for 14,5 years and now i finally know!!!

  • she looks like the chick from My Big Fat Wedding. :) Love this song!

  • luv dis song!!!!

  • As if these pros would allow an out of tune guitar!

  • The guitar, out of tune!!?? Hell, no! You must be tone deaf to say that.

  • Great song...one of my 1980 favourites..but i do agree a bit about the guitar solo..it never seemed quite the right key

  • it is disotonic... to give an edge/..//// learn music or listen to top 40 crap

  • I'm so sorry for not being an expert..i have never heard of disotonic...and I NEVER listen to top 40 crap

  • Of course you are correct, re: DISCOtonic

  • @euronick61 "but i do agree a bit about the guitar solo..it never seemed quite the right key"

If you practice a little music (100 years?) you will find a fitting chord for this called minor with major seven.

You will find it often in tensive moments. But not at Justin Bieber's

  • every body did a disco song back in the day

  • videowatcher4006.. your a dumb shit... i recommend Jonas Brothers for you...

  • So what year was this?

  • Judging from the costumes, it must have been soon after EXTENSIONS was released, which would make it late '79/early '80.

  • I remember I went to see them perform when I was like 7!(: good times.

  • Twilight Zone Twilight Tone is a great song. Now about the actual music video is a testament to "Hey! You know what would be a great idea?" gone horribly wrong.

  • 3:54 - bald az!

  • Has anyone got the original video for this? I haven't seen it in years.

  • superbly awsome!!!

  • Nope nothing in common with the GE song except title.

  • i love the song but this production is weak.

  • The costuemes are lovely and nothing further will avail.

the noblryd g humsity will shineo ot fail to do sol

  • Great song, Cheryl Bentyne an awesome vocalist and couldn't ask for more. Yet Everytime the musicians change the solo they are obliged to make it worse. Doesn't matter who, when or what song, they just are. Must be written into the contract.

  • Yes Cheryl is great but the lead on this is The Greatest.....Janis Siegel

  • This is great modern Jazz/pop fusion at its best. See Birdland, Boy From New York City.

  • i can't fault this musically yet i've got a total brasser

something is not right here at all

  • Yes, the music IS at fault - many notes are clearly not in tune. One of the hazards of live. Janis clearly is under duress - very sheeny shine.

  • Well apparently you don't know music... every note was spot on... what you may be hearing in that feeble ear of yours is dissonance used for effect and perhaps the stacked jazz harmonies.... go back to Britney Spears....

  • this group sets the standard,,,,love it

  • @Othaepia ur right this stuff is awsome!

  • @Othaepia I think that listening back on this, even Manhattan Transfer would acknowledge that some of the notes are not 'spot on.' (For example, around 2:09). That being said, this is the exception, not the rule with them.

  • @Othaepia

wow....how's the weather up on your pedestal?

  • @Othaepia LOL!!!!!

  • I've been looking for this. While I like Golden Earring, I knew there was a diierent song called Twilight Zone with a female vocal. No idea it was Manhatten Transfer

  • je comprend rien

  • I love the song too, but why do people keep calling this "Twilight Zone?" It's "Twilight Tone."

  • Actually, it's called "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone"

  • Bought this 45 when I was 13 and played the heck out of it. Great song.

  • this song is classic brilliance & i love it...great upload sweet jess XXXXXXX

  • Man... this song was POPULAR back in the day!

  • wow, these guys are amazing...older yet wiser..love this one.

  • i saw my teacher sing to this......it scared me....

  • Brings back memories. :-)

    Thanks for posting this one!

  • Is this when they were on Midnight Special?

  • I really love this group, they can do anything they set their minds to do. I really loved this song among others. Even to this day they still got it !! Thanks for posting

  • ok i might not have been even thought of during the 70's but i think they are an amazing group. where have good singers like them gone

  • I love the lead singer, however I have heard her do a better job. The guitar solo was not that good, a little flat. I love MHTF, they are truly a great group

  • the solo on the record is one of the best guitar solo i ever heard

  • The solo on the album is the Producer Jay Graydon. He is a beast!! Also my hero the late Jeff Porcaro from Toto layed the drums on the album version!

  • I'm mostly a funk & r&b guy. but I got a lot a love for Steve and Jeff Porcaro. Jay Graydon is a BAAAAAD MAN!!!

  • wtf

  • It's Twilight Tone.

  • The singing is shabby compared to the 12" version. Also the guitar solo.

  • ya the studio version is way better

  • W.O.W. - AWESOME !

  • What a crap solo. Just whale on the thing and that's a solo? It was nothing close to the original. The singers were great, though.

  • Jay Graydon played the solo on the album version....

  • I think it *is* Jay Graydon on guitar, judging by the photo on his website and of course those killer licks!

  • It's Wayne Johnson on guitar. He toured with them for many years.

  • is that jay graydon?

  • I believe that it is in Chicago

  • The glories of YouTube. There's a clip of "Nightingale" in these costumes/hairstyles from WTTW - does anyone know where to get that tape or DVD? Just such fun!

  • Is this at the Park West?

  • this is rare
