  • Thanks for the nice video..mine is 2000 Saturn S-L1 is the way different? I tried your method and it didn't work. The key only comes out not the cylinder! I noticed that in the access-hole from the top of the cylinder has a spring and that the screw driver is only pushing onto that spring (which I think is not supposed to)..I used a lubricant spray already (a lot of it)

  • @arramad

Ok, now I see you have another awesome video for 00-02 saturn cars! I will check that and get back to you (there) if I haven't gotten it done...thanks Rich :)

  • I have a 2002 Toyota sienna the release button won't work.( I have the key turned to access) any tips?

  • @mystomachurts1 Have you tried some WD-40

  • @richpin06a yeah. didn't worked.

  • Richpin, you saved my day AGAIN. I paid for an OEM ignition $witch from a Chevy dealer, but I did it all myself, no labor costs!

    Thank You * 1999 (Saturn SW2)

  • @cfg83 I bet life is good now.

  • Where can you buy the lock cylinder and what does it usually cost? I also need to get the original keys for my doors since the key I have is bent and worn.

  • do you know if its similar on a 01 maxima

  • I have this same car which runs great but my key will not turn the lock. So this method will not work. I am getting to the point where I am considering breaking it. Will it work if I ram a screwdriver in it and turn it with a wrench to shear it?

  • U Really Should Disconnect The Battery When U Did This Thats WHut U Suppose To Do First

  • Mine doesn't move to accessory so will I have to drill it out?

  • @skamilf When they do not move like this you are limited in what you can do.

  • I've done about 5 of these on different cars and this one is 10 times easier than the other cars. Gotta love Saturn

  • Thank you for the video. Helped me out a bunch! You are the Saturn god!!

  • Great video first and foremost. Secondly, I have a cylinder that is locked up preventing the key from turning. It doesnt seem to be allowing the tumblers to fall. With that, can the cylinder be removed without turning it to the accessory position?

  • @jssmith1970 I do not believe it can.Somehow you need to get the key out and have a new key made from the V.I.N.

  • I have the earlier model SC2 1997 cylinder, I don't have an area to put in a pin to get the cylinder out, I did manage to get the cylinder out. Can you tell me how to reinstall the new cylinder?

    Thank You

    Bob

  • @robert196776 What i do is to watch as the old cylinder comes out to how it is positioned then i put it in the same way it came out.

  • Thanks for video. I followed all your instructions with no problem until I looked for the release tab. I have a 94 Saturn SC1, and like some of the others, I cannot find a release tab. the housing all looks solid. How do I get it out? Can you send ma link to the same video you sent to a few others? Thanks!

  • @knxmag Check your inbox i will send you a link to the picture.

  • I followed the instruction, but I couldn't get my key to turn from LOCK to ACC so I ended up buying some WD-40 like you mention in the comment below and wiggling the hell outta the key. It literally took me hours (on and off of trying) to get it to finally magically turn over. I no longer need to change the lock solenoid, I just can't put the key into LOCK mode. Thanks for the awesome video, and by the way, my key is completely smooth, there's harldy any teeth... Great video!

  • @richpin06a Very good instruction video, thank you! I bought a new cylinder for my SC1, and it has a different key. I heard that you can "adapt" the cylinder to another key. Any idea how to do this? I don't want to have two separate sets of keys, one for ignition and one for doors. Thanks.

  • @AzIDx0 If it can be done a locksmith would now.

  • @AzIDx0 OK, say you buy something like this: /OES-Genuine-Ignition-Cylinder-select/dp/B001T9IAKS/ref=au_pf_pfg_s?ie=UTF8&Model=SC1|623&n=15684181&s=automotive&Make=Saturn|53&Year=1999|1999&newCar=1&carId=001

    (put amazon in front)

That fits your car. How to use those small pins so that the old key can operate it? I don't want to go to a locksmith, I'm a broke student.

  • hay i'm having trouble putting the new cylinder in i dont no why is there a way to tell if the coll om stayed in the acc position in u could get back to me thank you

  • @cbigfrmreno It should have stayed in the acc position if you pulled it straight out and no one turned it while it was out.

  • If you actually have a key then why do you need this???

  • @nomnomnomnomnomnom0 : My key is stuck in the ignition and wont turn over or come out. Ive had issues like this for a few years so I'm probably going to have to replace that piece, hence this is a useful vid :)

  • @nomnomnomnomnomnom0 In case it is broken, and won't turn right, or jams. Mine has a symptom where it jams or spins, you can take the key out with it on, it also pushes in and gets stuck. So I'm replacing it.

  • Any idea how to remove one from a '97 Toyota Camry? Thanks in advance.

  • @soulshower I have not worked on that year and model sorry

  • Hi Rich, I was wondering how would you remove a cylinder on a 97 Saturn SL2, the cylinder is stuck in the off position.

  • @flemrock43 Have a new key cut by the VIN and use lots of WD-40

  • now the black and the mexican get a hold of this

  • Thanks SO MUCH! I had my SL2 towed home because I couldn't get the key out of the ignition and figured I was going to need a $300 fix (typical it seems with stuff like this). Instead I was able to get the cylinder WITH the Key stuck in it removed after viewing your video! I then was able to get the key out. I re-installed the cylinder and all is working great! THANK YOU.. THANK YOU.. THANK YOU!

  • THANK YOU!!! You made this job sooooooo much easier for me!

  • hey I have a 1995 S series, I can't find the release tab to get the cylinder out, nor is there a hole anywhere. As far as I can tell the the cylinder housing is completely solid. Any suggestions? thanks-great video

  • @shackletainment Check you inbox i will send you a link to its location.

  • @richpin06a

  • @mncoffer Use WD-40 to get it to move

  • hey rich! love your videos. i am having that ignition cylinder problem with my wife's sl2

i am ready to change it out but , will i have to have the switch coded to match the door locks , i don't want extra keys...thanks

  • @karlakatie1522 Yes a locksmith or the GM dealer can do that for you.

  • hey rich! love your videos. i am having that ignition cylinder problem with my wifes sl2

im ready to change it out but , will i have to have the switch coded to match the door locks , i dont want extra keys...thanx

  • I tried replacing the lock cylinder in a 97 S series and it wont come out even when pressing the pin down. I got a cylinder from one of those you pull it junk yards and that one came out very easy. Could the lock cylinder be broke so its hanging on the actual ignition switch?

  • @jjarrells Use some WD40 it will come out.

  • Lol try replacing a lost key Saturns are the worst!Good vid!

  • how do u take out the key now from the cyl

  • i have a 98 saturn sc1 and the key has been hard to use for about 2 years now...

now it wont turn at all, how do i remove the lock cylinder if the key wont turn to acc?

  • @ZoSobeme Sometimes a new key cut buy the dealer will get you going again.

  • @richpin06a actually i just kept wiggling the key and after about 6 hours of trying off and on it turned again and i went strait to auto zone. thanks your video was very helpful!

  • Will this work on a 97 pontiac grand prix

  • what if the key wont turn at all ....ps I have a 2001 L100

  • what if the key wont turn at all ....ps I have a 2001 L100

  • ok, so i have a 97 sl2 that the key was lost. also, the ignition was replaced, so dealer cannot replace from vin number. I removed the old one by Polish-engineering, (drill, screw driver, and hammer), but because of this, the part behind is NOT lined up properly. I spent hours attempting to insert the replacement switch, but cannot get it to go all the way in....any hints?

  • how do u know how to take it out from an audi80? i need help

  • Will this work on 2001 SC-2 3 door coupe?

  • @sixstringsmith No but i do have a video for the 00-02 that you can use.

  • Eyy You Sound Like Ray From EveryBody Loves Raymond! lol

  • @407Modified I get that a lot...lol

  • Dear richpin06a, you saved my (LIFE) one more time again today. You must be an angel, even if not in this current life, but definitely will be in the next one. THANK YOU and GOD BLESS.

  • @Galaxy7007 I am just trying to make amends for all the not so good things i did early in my life.

  • great video. i have a 2000 olds silohuette mini van. Crazy woman pulled keys out while car was in drive. I put it in park now the keys will not turn. Can you give me any feedback on how to fix this? memph33777@yahoo.com.

    Thanks in advance.

  • @memph33777 I have not worked the silohuette so i am not sure what is involved here.

  • thanks for the video, i'm wondering if you have any tips... i put my key into the ignition to start the my saturn 92, however, the key got stuck half way and it will not turn off or turn on the car, so its just using up my battery. any help would be greatly appreciated:)

  • @ammusiconline Sounds like you have a worn out key spray with WD40 and wiggle the key around.

  • Ya I don't have a key either, I bought the replacement, but I jut can't figure out how to get it out, without calling a locksmith. Help. It's a 1960 Lincoln continental. Thanks.

  • I dont have a key for the lock cylinder. How can i remove it?

  • @1968johnw A mobile locksmith should be able to help you out.

  • Hey Rich,

I followed the steps on taking the upper and lower steering wheel shroud off and need to tighten the two bolts that hold the lock cylinder on the steering column, they are not your typical bolts, they have what looks like a star, almost identical to a star screwdriver, is there some special socket that I need for this or what, I need to tighten the lock cylinder as it wobbles a lot . Thanks, keep up the good videos.

  • @living4fire I think you are talking about the anti theft bolts they use were the heads are sheered off when they are put in.You need a chisel and vise grip to remove them then install a regular bolt.

  • ThanX. had to do this tonight on my 96 TOYOTA 4Runner. Pretty much the same eXcept push pin is on the bottom like YOU eXplained how the Gen 3 would be.

  • How can I do this with no key? My ignition won't turn

  • Thanks! I just fixed my 95 Saturn tonight with your help. Cost $20 for the part and 7/32" long socket to get in that hole. Had to get it from Sears. No one else had one that was thin enough.

But it all went well. Done in an hour. Certainly longer for me than 3 minutes.

  • Also the manuals on both the lock cylinder and and the car's manual advises disconnecting the battery and airbags... have you experienced this problem?

  • @FatalFist When working near the air bag and its wire it is a good idea to remove the negative battery cable from the battery and waiting a least 30 minutes.

  • @richpin56 So if I just primarily focus on just the Lock Cylander, I shouldn't have to have to worry?

Guess I just need to find a 5.5 nut driver, I have a few but none of them are 5.5 except for one... which yeah gets stuck.

  • @FatalFist You can get a 5.5 mm nut driver at a hobby shop. The years 96-02 get stuck

  • @richpin06a Yup took some trouble finding but went over to Kragen and they sold me a kit for about $6. So I got it fixed without airbags going off, it was just the cylinder though not the switch, at least I wont worry about the switch right now.

  • I have a Saturn SC2 myself where the lock apparently wont let me turn the key at all nor turn the wheel; or rather it does but it takes a lot of dexterity and patience. I want to avoid spending hundreds but since I have no idea what I'm doing, just trying to find a way to do this myself without screwing up too bad.

  • @FatalFist I have yet to run across one in this condition so i have never repaired one that would not turn.I would suspect you would probably have to drill or use a dent puller to get the lock cylinder out.

  • @richpin06a Well I can get it to work which makes me suspect a pin is jammed. I just need to keep the wheel from auto locking (which is natural otherwise) and sort of lean the key into the twist to make it work.

  • how do you remove if you have key

  • @mooseriverross If you do not have a key a GM dealer should be able to make one from your vin number.

  • c'mon man, go easy on everyone and try talking in plain language everyday people will understand...5.5mm socket = no such thing or at least every mechanic and tool guy I know has never heard of that size...try a 7/32" socket. Also, the reason most people need to replace their key cylinder is because they are jammed and won't turn which your video sadly doesn't address (you need to drill tumblers out)

  • I'm not sure if there's such thing as a 5.5mm socket but I did this job and used a deep well 7/32nd socket. By the way...Saturn, you and GM suck at designing cars. Why the key's jam on these cars I still don't know. This should have been a recall...

  • the video is great help. but the reason that i am replacing the ignition is because the key will not turn at all. i understand that in order to remove it you have to turn the key to the acc. position but like i said the key will not turn. so my question is how do remove it without turning the key?

  • ok i have a problem mine is blocked i cant move it right or left and i wanna take it out what can i do???

  • Ok - thanks - I'll let ya know how it goes..lol

  • Ok - thanks - I'll let ya know how it goes..lol

  • How different is this rom an '06 Ion? Just received my cyylinder and key and am about to go try to put it in.

    Thank in advance!

  • @blackwaterstudios Hard to say because i have not worked on any ion's

  • can u give instructions for a 78 pontiac firebird ignition removal?

  • thanks dude my ignitin got fucked up so yeah i needed this lol

  • Thanks Richpin I have followed your video and the lock Cylinder came out easy. Im having trouble putting the new one in. I line everthing up and have the key in the ACC. position. The new one is a GM part I purchased from a Saturn dealership. Its the exact same part. I had to have a locksmith put it together so I could use the old keys. Have you come across this problem ?

  • @Fattboy59 The ones i have taken apart and put back together had to be moved around and lined up before it when in.

  • how do you get a ignition lock cylinder off on a 96 saturn Sl model

  • Rich,

I have still not found a decent answer for removing the cylender when the key won't turn. Which is why I want to replace it in the first place. It is stuck in the lock position. Since I have the new part, should I just jam a screwdriver and force it into the acc position?

  • I lost my spare car key. How do I start this shitty car? I have the title and everything, I just need to start it to get back home. I know this car is easy to steal, but I don't know how to do that stuff.

  • @johnsom3 Bring your title and license to any GM dealer and they will make a key for you.

  • is removing a cylinder the same on most cars??? i have a 97 pontiac bonniville SE i take it 2 the dealership 2 find out was wrong this video is excatly what the dealship said was wrong with my car but i dont think it should cost $532.00 for something that simple i think they are upping the price because im a gul

  • @KaTrinahRainbowDiva Pretty much the same.Does seem pricey.

  • i have a question, my ignition switch get stuck, i have my key, but it wont turn to the accessory position, what should i do?

  • if ur stealin the car u dont care about the plastic

  • im having a problem getting the ignition column out of my 86' caddy de ville. I'm not sure if there's a key broken off inside it or not, but it just won't turn. Also, I can't find where to even remove the steering column, let alone get the car to the 'accessory' position, or what have you. This sucks!!!! Anybody care to help? lol

  • so easy on saturns

  • any wanna be car thieves , forget this , yu need a key, best bets are auto jigglers , slimmed keys, or drill it

  • If it has RFID/transponder they do. A slide hammer or lock pick set will do it otherwise. It's a double wafer with sidebar, and the whole thing is held it with a small screw...

  • 95 nissan maxima is it the same? can i use this method to remove it from my maxima?

  • Did ti today, out and replaced in about 30 minutes. tho the cylinder I got from Napa looks a little different, everything worked correctly.

    thanks

  • I thought that was great, thanks. But I am worried my key won't turn when I have it apart, because the only reason I want to take it apart is because it the ignition will not turn while the key is in. We'll see.

  • hi, thanks for the video, question i lost my keys can get a new key from the dealer? and what imformation do they need? the vin #? it's a nissan pick up truck 96.

  • Yes you can have the dealer cut you a couple keys.Bring your title with you.

  • thank you so much you have been very helpfull i really apreciate you...

  • criss de tabarnark criss de gros cave toi PD call de 911

  • That is Cool

  • But if u have a key why would u wanna take it out?

  • to steal it dumbass

  • Why would you steal an ignition cylinder? And if you're talking about the vehicle itself, you would have to have that in there.

  • so that you could change it for example a key was broken inside of it or in my case the cylinder itself was damaged.

that being said saturns are pieces of shit. A ford you can stick the key in and push a hidden button to remove it takes about 5 seconds to remove and install the new one.

  • So what does a replacement cylinder cost approximately, and I guess that would mean going through the dealer specifically because it would probably be a brand new key?

  • 15.00 and 40.00 from rockauto

  • Thanks! One last question: What if the key won't turn? That's my problem...The ignition is stuck down and halfway turned to the accessory position.

  • If the lock cylinder is in the acc position you can still replace it as per this video. Just remove the top column cover to get at the release button.

  • What if the lock cylinder is stuck in the lock position? Is there any way to replace it without going to the dealership?

  • Hi, I would like to thank you for your videos, they have helped me out alot as I haven't ever worked on a car before. I have a 97 Saturn SC2 that was given to me. The key is shaved.. There are barely any teeth left on it and, and I have to work it to get it to unlock and start the car anymore. A recent trip to the junkyard for body parts, I found a 98 Wagon that has the locks, keys, and ignition still in it...If I were to just switch out the ILC, would I be able to use the key that is with it?

  • Yes it will work fine.If you do not want a separate key for the doors, trunk and ignition.Have the dealer cut a new key from your VIN number on the original key.

  • That's what I had to do too. I bought 2 new keys cut at the dealer from the VIN #.

    I have a 2002 SL1.

  • Rich, this totally saved my bacon. Thank you.

  • You are my hero!

I replaced my ignition lock cylinder today on my 96 Saturn SC2! Last fall I replaced my front brake pads and rotors from watching your brake video, as well. I was very careful including making sure the rotors were snug and everything was put back together correctly. You have saved this old woman tons of money during these tough economic times. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! :)

  • That's what i like to hear.

  • thats rich big help

  • I have a saturn sl2 with a bad ignition lock cylinder and a saturn sc2 that I'm using for parts for the sl2.

    Are the lock cylinders compatible?

    Great tutorial by the way.

  • I believe 91-99 are.

  • Rich, you need to post some videos of removing front struts on gen 1 s-series, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • rich big thanks goes out to you!!! I was able to save i don't know how much money because of your skill and the time you took to make such a wonderful video thanks a million!!I done it!!!

  • this video was great! however what happens when the key is stuck in the ignition and it will not turn to the accessory position how do you remove it then?

  • Remove the key somehow and get a new one cut at the dealer. If that is not an option then replace the whole unit.

  • rich thanks I was able to get the key out but i still want to replace the ignition the key will not turn to accessory how do i remove it (the ignition)

  • A new key might work.

  • No a newly cut code key will NOT WORK IT. At the back of the ignition cylinder is a recessed groove with a steel pin that extends into a track under spring pressure. The zamac casting has broken away and the pin now is trapped in the cavity of the broken material. Replacement is the only way. Call a competent locksmith and he can help you out. I am a locksmith that have done a few dozen of these and its always the same problem with the Ortech ignitions....

  • are yu the dude out of ghost busters

  • No that's my twin brother.

  • hey i have a 1996-97 ford thunderbird, the ignition locked up and now we cant go anywhere can you help?

  • Thanks for the great video. I have an ignition switch which always chimes when the drivers door is open and the car is off, as if the key was left in the ignition. Will replacing the lock cylinder repair this, and how do I set the new lock cylinder to accept my key?

  • If the key cylinder does not pop out it will chime. On the gen 1 saturns this problem is a bad Ignition Switch in most cases.

  • The car is a 97 Saturn SL2 is this a gen 1? Do I replace the ignition switch then put the old lock cylinder into the new ignition switch?
