@mymusicvideos111 lolwut? Artists have always been bent over by their labels. They make their money on merch sales and touring (at least until their first oppressive multi-album contract is completed). Stealing a new artist's music probably helps them to be honest. It's about exposure, not sales.
An old story guess the crowd is on his side now he incited them to steal, though when he says steal how does any one know what his druggie brain means as so many music stores have gone out of business, I guess he is encouraging bootlegging which one does know if he benefits or not if he doesn't release his contract with the recording companies he works with.
Hey Michael Trent you putting copies of your contracts online?
If you don't make money recording how you pay bills?
wtf? he is a millionaire. of course he tells fans to steal it to get back at the record labels. NOT to help his fans. he doesn't give a fuck about you!!
@mrsmusicgeek He's angry about the prices, his record company didn't wrong him they wronged his fans which made him angry, and you say he doesn't care? What does he stand to gain from this besides fan loyalty?
he doesn't give a shit about his fans. he is so selfish and only out to hurt the record labels. he makes so much money he doesn't care about any of us.
@wayrwulf just when i thought he was over this whole "my crazy fans don't like my yoko wife" wah wah he says in a recent interview with Times that he wouldn't "discourse" with his fans. he mocks us- let's his bitch wife make fun of NIN fans online, calling them fat, plump, cut along the vein for suicide tips...etc. when he said that shit i said you're an ungrateful son of a bitch.
@wayrwulf ever listen to his interviews or read NIN or twitter? he told his fans to cut along the vein and their fat fug plump goths. He is an ungrateful dick that is what he is. He won't "discourse" with any of us he said b/c most of NIN fans are "idiots".
I'm going to say that this man does care quite a bit about his fans. I don't know, the free music he's given away over the years, and the fact that he try's to keep prices low, and gives his fans early access to tickets to avoid rebuyers, is because he doesn't care about us?
Nice to see an artist that big stand up for the customers
Record la bels always keep the majority of the money anyway, bands are luck if they get $1.50 to split 4 ways off each cd......... Most acts make the lions share of their fortunes off touring
The reason for the CD Rant is because the artists get screwed on their CD sales and see very little profit from them and the lion share of their money comes from the concerts. So support your favorite artists by seeing them in person.
i was at this show too- was bloody AWESOME, was pretty trashed and when i heard the 'steal it' bit, i wasnt sure if i heard correctly, had to go over the stuff on my camera to verify what id just heard - soo good though!!!
you realize, he's not the first to come right out and say it...wasn't it system of a down, lol, named thier album, 'steal this album' or some shit like that? lol
Not to start any fights about it, but SOAD remained on their major label after releasing it, and plus the title of Steal This Album was based off of other projects (Steal This Book, Movie, etc.)... Basically Trent was much more sincere about his call to steal his music.
Agreed. The physical album is just as part of the experience as much as the music is.
Year Zero was a perfect example. I played the ARG as long as I could, which I found through the link hidden in both the liner notes and the phone number on the back of the CD case. Too bad I didn't make it all the way to the secret show =( :P
The fact that NIN has always been so open about their music has in fact encouraged me to buy his CDs and to begin my own NIN collection - $150 later, I own the vast majority of the Halo and Seed Collections.
I still don't regret buying them but does this mean I just fed the labels he hates, to support his music?
They were fucking amazing in Chicago at Aragon btw if anyone was there ^^
what? i have spent over 270 dollars, and I've only got about 12, but i guess music is way more expensive in Norway ...
but i agree with you, if you are a real fan, dowloaded files aren't enough, you have to own the albums, then the music means more, it feels more valuable in away
well, to be fair, I did buy most of them discounted - for example, I DO have the Closure VHS, BUT the original owner scarred the box. I'm not one to care much about condition, all I care about is the music. So while the average mint copy goes for at LEAST 60, I got mine for 10 bucks on Amazon.
In addition, ordering in quantity saves a shitload on shipping. ($2 flat rate per entire order saves a LOT more than I originally thought it would)
you think music is expensive just in australia? entertainment prices in general are through the fucking roof across the world man. and fuck supporting artists. artist's get jack shit for their work through cd sales unless they are independent, or own all of the rights to their music instead of their label. the only people getting supported through music sales are the record label exec's that already have enough money to buy three or four small european countries.
the whole point is theres no such thing as a bad version, every time its played, every set up is different, the EAR synth they use will always give a slightly different feel, always beautiful. :)
Its nice to see a true Artist like Trent Reznor looking out for the fans by keeping his ticket prices lower than many other bands and trying to keep CD prices lower... Got to really respect him for that besides his phenomenal music.
Was never much of a fan of his music, although he is a very talented artist. This brought him to a new respect from me though. I remember this whole dilemma though, lol.
I think that Trent and Thom Yorke of Radiohead raised the bar for this downloading off the internet era. It is damn good, that way these greedy corporate fuck's can't earn that six figure contract that they are used to. Maybe they should have some talent that would could exhibit for profit.
DUDE DON'T HAVE TO TELL ME TWICE! LET'S STEAL IT!!!!!!! XD i'm gonna see nin in August! i've wanted to give up my concert virginity to Nine inch nails, so... OH YEAH!!!!!!
Trent really is a man of the people. And, i took his advice to heart. I now have every NIN CD, illegally. Of course, at one point, I did own most of his albums legally but they were stolen from me, along with most of the rest of my music library. But it's ok, I've got the internet!
Awesomeness! Claiming property on somebody else his creative ideas is real theft! Fuck the media corporations! If artist really would get a decent part of the cd sales it would be a different story.
Downloading and pirating music is a revolutionary way for bands to promote themselves. They can reach much more people than before. We must NOT let the capitalist companies take this privilage away from us!
i already preordered the slip even though i downloaded it for free through his website months ago, going to see them at voodoo fest this year, cant wait
fucking great. Trent, you are the man amongst men. i will still buy nine inch nails even knowing i can get it for free. NIN deserves *nothing* less...
you're totally missing the point. If you buy cd's from the record company the artists don't make money. Performers make their money through touring. If you really like trent so much go to his website and make a donation...
It's a wonder that in this day and age that record and distribution companies actually exist. The internet stretches to almost every corner of the globe. A friend of mine was working in Nairobi and they had access there. So, why don't artists ditch their labels and go "solo"? No record companies, no distributors, no PR, no marketing. If they only had to pay their touring staff and whoever records/produces their CDs, then buying CDs/records would cost sweet f*ck all. But then, there's taxes...
Trent Reznor is awesome!!!! he continues to stick it to the man in a world where everything is becoming so commercial and so god damn grey... *bows down to NIN*
Free music is still profitable when you factor in the money made from concert tickets, t-shirts, posters, or some people will still buy the CD just because they want the liner notes and cover art etc...
Actually, concerts and merch are the only way a new musician makes money now. In the first five years of their career, new artists see exactly zero percent of their CD sales. The record industry can shove it up their asses.
I watched it about 20 times now and every time I'm watching this I keep telling myself that Trent Reznor is such a great rebel (in a good way of course) and I'm so proud that I'm a NIN fan!! I'm a good thief (I download everything which is not NIN lol)
Trent Reznor is a brillant artist!! Every album is a place in his life and in his fans life. Iv listen to NIN sense i was 15 I evan named my son after Trent! NIN music takes me and i would beleave others to a place they can relate to in life. There is not ONE song that I cant say is not attached to a memory or a feeling I have had in my life. I hope to be 90 in a rocking chair listening to NIN...LOL THANK YOU TRENT THANK YOU NIN!!!
That was a reference to the fact that all the songs on the album had been demos that leaked on line, so they released it anyway to make a buck of it, "Steal This Album" is a reference to how everyone had already downloaded it.
17 augest 2005 was the best night of my life. i flew from nz to see nin play in melbourne. i took my mum who lives there. we had a blue mitsibishi(sp) i still to this day get cold chills when i here there live stuff. i had to go be sick at one point cos it got a bit intense no show has ever come close to this.....well tool maybe

What about the system of a down album entitled, simply, "steal this album". Thats balls. Trents got balls too, obviously. And better music.
MiddaPwess 4 years ago 4
That was a reference to the fact that all the songs on the album had been demos that leaked on line, so they released it anyway to make a buck of it, "Steal This Album" is a reference to how everyone had already downloaded it.

I remember buying this single in the 90's before the their double album came out. It was one of the most anticipated albums of the decade.
And the album didn't live up to the merit of its former albums.
It's been a bleak empty time in musical history since the early 90's, but that opinion is relative to one's age.
