I though it was all pretty good, except for the 18th variation (at the beginning of this clip) - things are a little too drawn-out and sentimental. The rest of it has that characteristic macho Rachmaninov approach that is the real way to play this repertoire - I just wonder why she couldn't be a leaner and meaner at the start.
I have to agree on the 18th..... (Although it's being selected for music samplers.) I think the best variations in this performance are 13, 14, 15. I don't agree on the start- I thought it was as good as it gets.
I agree. The start of the 18th is a bit too slow; perhaps a little too schmaltzy. It is marked andante cantabile. She has a very nice sound. Well projected!
I don't think one could say that there is a "real way" to play a piece of music, it's all interpretation. And Rachmaninov's music is mostly forceful and strong but that doesn't necessarily make it "macho". The 18th variation is played very well. I couldn't imagine it being played "leaner and meaner". It's a nostalgic, dream-like moment in the symphony can't be played like the rest.
@untilltheday77 Watch Rachmaninov's own interpretations - reminiscent of Rubinstein's unsentimental yet emotionally powerful interpretations of Brahms and Chopin. You have to understand that Rachmaninov has been so over-sentimentalized that most of today's concert pianists see it as their duty to dig themselves out of that hole. Yes, there is a "real way" to play a piece - obeying the intentions of the composer as much as possible, while interpreting it with your own potent personality.
listen at about 4:55-4:58, Tchivzhel drops his baton and the violinist tries not to laugh!! i actually remember being in the audience, she was definitely the crowd favorite
You're right, he isn't using his baton afterwards! That's quite funny. And it's true Ayako did glance towards the orchestra, I guess she noticed but kept her concentration. In any case, wonderfully emotional performance.
@arvidt1 I thought I was imagining things at first but then I remembered years of band and concert choir and recalled that light tinkling din HAD to be the sound of a baton hitting the stage floor. Too funny!
なんかテクニックが足りない感じがする。
女性的な演奏、ってかな。プレトニョフと比べればテンポも遅めでオクターブのミスも多い。

Although the trombones could have emphasised the Dies Irae more, her playing was electrifying. A powerful and beautifully executed performance

Personally, I liked and very much enjoyed her interpretation of the 18th variation. The emotion and sentimentality in it is very beautiful.

I thought one of the string players dropped his/her bow. Ayako glanced toward the orchestra, but didn't let it distract her.
