  • so singing an octave below or above the mealody dosent count as harmony?

  • @epischeReise Nope.

A harmony is when you're singing another note of the same chord, if you will.

  • very nice, can you include legends since I am Brazilian and understand all english is not easy for me, then I can learn more. BTW very beautifull sing. Blesses!

  • I think you guys are so good, I love your videos so entertaining and informative, I need to ask a question about this lesson:

My problem is I sing with my church group and I can sing harmony when I sing with a male singer but if there is only females singing then I get lost. I tried your techniques in this video and the other one but I still have the problem, what can I do to fix it? What am I doing wrong? Why can't I sing harmony with other female singers?

  • OMG you two are sooo adorable! and man your voices are incredible together!! <3

  • Erik are you related to Ricky Dillard, You guys sound great!!!!

  • weird laugh at 5:37 :p

  • If theres anyone who can teach you good harmonies its a black person! yaaaallll can saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnggg. mmm. Love it! So beautiful!

  • Amazing! I have always loved to sing but not in front of people, even though my dad is a singer. I have always naturally harmonized and I miss it. You 2 made me feel motivated to sing again! Thank You! You guys sound incredible together! :)

  • @lloyd614: Hi Erik, can you make a tutorial how to do riffs and runs?? and when u are riffing, how does your throat feels like? i've been trying to learn though i'm not too sure if i'm doing it rite and when i was riffing, i can feel that there is a slight jumping or movement in my throat when moving from one note to another, if you understand what i mean..

  • I think I liked the dissonance better! I loved it!

  • i love this video! i seem to keep stumbling upon it :) Love the way you guys work together....peace:)

  • This was pretty good. You both have great voices!!! One thing would have been more helpful, especially for beginners would be if you'd sing the melody first alone then the harmony by itself then put it all together. I've sung in lots of choral groups but for pop music I'm having a hard time with harmony. Got too much Mozart stuck in my head. :)

  • Can harmonies be on the same note...just in different octaves?

  • @jerantrog No that's not harmony. Octaves and Fifths one after the other do not constitute harmony because it ends up with you both singing the same melody only with one higher voice and one lower. To sound consonant, 3rd's & 6ths are good. To sound dissonant, 2nd's, 4ths, & 7th's. So when you mix these all up against the main melody...you have harmony! :)

  • that was sweet. Thank you!

  • You guys are too cute, to not be a couple. Just sayin'... :)

I loved your video, btw. It's is very informative. Please continue sharing. Blessings to you both. Peace.

  • @arizonanicki Ha ha ha! Me and Janeen laugh every time we hear someone say that. She's such a sweetheart! Love her! Thanks so much for your feedback. =)

  • @arizonanicki He's gay. Not that it's a problem, it's just true.

  • You guys are too cute, to not be a couple. Just sayin'... :)

  • Awesome video. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Man I just wanna jump on over through my laptop onto your couch and give you all a big hug! Thank you for such an awesome series! Peace and love

  • You guys are gorgeously funny and sweet. I need your HEEEELLLLLP baby!! hehehe....i need to learn singing 1/3rd higher and 1/3rd lower.....

  • Oh my goodness! You both are adorable! I cant stop smiling during this:))

Well the reason i am watching is because i just got accepted in my Youth Worship Band, at my church and i am supposed to learn how to harmonies, im in Varsity Choir and have been in band for like 5 years so im alright with reading music and octives and stufff but its still hard:/

  • I still stink at harmonizing, but I just loved listening to you two sing, you guys are amazing!

  • are they christian

  • For the first couple of minutes I didn't think you had anything to teach me - half way through I was totally won over. I still don't think you can teach me what I want to know because I don't have 100th of the talent you guys have but I'll keep watching your vids in the hope some of it rubs off.

  • wow great video! :)

  • that was beautiful! im still learning how to harmonize..hopefully I can sound as good as u guys

  • hi i just wanted to see if you can help i sing at my church and they have me singing alto and i think i can sing soprano can you help me figure this out(we had no tryouts so they just placed me)how can i find out if i am?

  • I think there is more than vocal harmony goin on there :)

I am glad that I found your videos- I can't help but smile the whole way through- you two are great and so informative- and adorable!! thank you!

  • @chocolatemilkmaid LOL!!!! Thank you so much for "both" of your comments on here and Rihanna! LOL!!! I'm so glad you found me, too! Hope you continue to enjoy the content on the channel.

  • You are GREAT!

  • Beautiful!! You guys are amazing!!!

  • I think people leave stupid negative comments because you guys seem so happy and content in this video and they cant stand anyone to be happy and content because they are sadistic in their pathetic miserable lives they cant stand to see people actually enjoying themselves. You guys have great voices!!!

  • Keep up these informative, AWESOME videos!!! pay no attention to the losers who give negative comments to you. They have self-esteem problems.

  • mann I cannot believe some of the comments I've read on here, this is awesome plz dont listen to haters, there's far too many of them. Both of you can sing, and honest people on here have no problem admitting it

  • @ParkerHipHop Hey there! Thanks so much for the love and support. It's cool...I don't worry about people that spew hate on my channel. In the beginning it used to bother me because all I'm trying to do is help people, but you know how some folks can be...."never happy"..."NEVER"! LOL!!! I appreciate YOU! =)

  • makes me smile :) nice job

  • @mussman717word's Comment: With an into like that, I wouldn't take anything this video has to say too seriously, lol. "Tha Clinik! Tha Clinik! Tha Clinik!" SHIT MUSIC, no that's too good of a word.

Erik's Reply: An "into"...? The "Clinik"...? ~ New Lesson: People who choose to be negative should ALWAYS spellcheck if they intended to be taken seriously themselves.

  • @lloyd614 y

"Intro" was a simple typo. "Clinik" is meant to be derogatory towards the kind of techno-computer bullshit music that plays during the introduction. The video actually wasn't bad, the intRo is misleading as hell.

  • @lloyd614 Erik you are a boss, @mussman717word whats your problem man? Jealousy is the prevailing thing that comes into my mind when i read your comment.

  • Nice, funny and I enjoyed it. Very good!!! Thanx

  • @psptubeist - Comment: Yall ugly as shit, cant sing , and fat. WHY even bother wasting ur life? go jump of a bridge espcially the fat ugly bitch lol thumbs up

Erik's Response: "I feel sooooo empathetically sorry for people like you. The sad part is, it will take a miracle for you to grow, mature and understand why. ~ Still wishing richest blessings to you and your loved ones."

  • @lloyd614

    ahahaahahaahhahahhaah

    Dont bother, brother lloyd.

People like that DO NOT grow up.

Nice work bro, and thanx for the singing, it is beautiful

  • @psptubeist You need to shut ur mouth!!!!!! They are amazing. I'm a singer and I almost thought about quitting!!! but I love music to much to quit. Anyway you just need to shut ur crap up and throw it away. Cause if u don't have anything nice to say DON'T say it. You don't have to comment this vid, you can just exit this video and look up something you would rather watch. It's just a waste of ur time, and its not goin to get you anywhere. So just frikkin give it up!!!!

  • @psptubeist Its funny cause you didn't get any thumbs up ! Haha

  • No no no he's just exhaling! He needs to phrase, it sounds harsh and robotic

  • this was very useful to me thanks

  • hahaha you two are funny :)

  • 6.47 "joy, joy" I think you do that to synchronize but it still looks like some funny freak ritual. Thanks for the video

  • @heythinkaboutit Ha ha ha!! I would have never thought that. Thanks! =) Glad you liked it.

  • WOW! Awesome. As an engineer who can't sing to say my life this is a valuable tool. Bless.

  • ok i have to hear songs that you guys have recorded!! you guys are awesome!! where can i find them

  • Beautiful voices and harmony. You are so good at replying cordially to negative comments. I have a lot of respect for intelligent and smiling people like you. Your wonderful singing adds to that. Also, you have a lovely smile.

  • Damn! Who knew aliens could sing? He look like dude on men in black dat grew his back and shorty......well...... she look like.......???????

  • Just wanna say that I appreciate your channel, and this video.

Also, you are very gracious in that way that you respond to negative comments. I don't see a lot of that on YT. That's a good look.

    God bless!

    :)

  • You guys are really gifted! greeting from Argentina

  • I love how you say "again" hahah...

    Great stuff!

  • This is marvelous! Thank you for making this video!!

  • you guys are entertaining.

  • We don't wanna know what you had for luch,We wanna know how to sing a Harmoney!

  • @bitchylil Thanks for your feedback. That explains your screen name.

  • I was hoping you would explain your "dissonant" harmonies and how you chose the notes (for example are all the notes you sing a part of the major (or minor?) scale of the key of the song? (c major right?) or are they only part of the chords? I'm trying to figure out how to write vocal harmonies on top of a melody better

  • Oh wow, you guys are amazing. Amazing.

  • i wish that i can understand all you teach and say :((,, my Eng is so bad :((

  • i hope you're not mad, i used to tempo of your song to write my own song... srry =,= although its not for profit nor public broadcast...

  • I cnt stop singing ALONG!! SO great!! i need your help... can you help me with my singing... its really hard on higher notes.. i looked at your other vids and i cnt quite get it still... i need help on REALLY high notes... with out using my head voice... hlpe me PLEASE!!

  • What an annoying video.... when does the lesson start and can you turn that god forsaken shit in the background off !! By the way "Dissonance" has nothing to do with unresolved tension as in suspended chords. You can't present a lesson on harmony without referring to intervals, the harmonized scale or at the very least the major scale.

  • @JoeGancher I agree a hundred percent.

  • @OMGshNicholas Well you can't tell the authors that. Great singing but not really showing people musically how they are doing it. Maybe they thought that a lot of people don't understand scales, not even the major scale to which I must rebut, if they can't be bothered learning the major scale, they can't learn anything about music period.

  • @JoeGancher I've always had a problem with people trying to just wing music without learning the right way and the proper way to do it. You brought a good point. They didn't talk about intervals at all through the whole video. Thats a giant part about harmonies. Correct intervals that compliment each other. I'm sure these people are great singers, but not correct.

  • another way to describe it is that there is a stress followed by a release

  • @esmerstar101 I like how you worded that...I agree! =)

  • @esmerstar101 That's not what dissonance means at all. The phenomenom they were attempting to describe is the "suspended" sound as in unresolved suspence by the use of 2 nds and 4ths. Dissonance means something that sound offensive or very disagreeable or out of tune NOT unresolved, suspense or tension.

  • @JoeGancher You are correct, the term "dissonance" is defined as, but is not limited to discord alone. It has multiple meanings. Being mutually exclusive, we sing both suspended and dissonant harmonies in this video and explain things in layman's terms.

More importantly, I LOVE collaborating with great minds about music! I do embrace intelligence and mature input, however, I do not welcome disrespect and sarcasm. YouTube can be a positive forum if its users conduct themselves accordingly.

    ~E~

  • @lloyd614 Ok well can you explain what someone is going to get out of this video and all the other ones that I've watched ? Lovely singing but nothing that I can see or hear that's really showing anyone anything. How about talking the language of music for starters ... as in intervals, the harmonized scales or at least mention what notes you are singing. The hyper talkative intro and irritating intro music was pretty much anti-music and really nothing to do with the subject at hand.

  • @JoeGancher Note: I took time to respond because you appear to be a pretty cognitive thinker. I admire intelligence!

Now, if you look at the content on my channel, as well as the feedback, you'll see the lexicon of music is discussed in clear, accurate detail and understood by many people. I'm not "ego-flexing" to make you agree with me. You are entitled to your "opinion", and I respect that. However, it is quite presumptuous to think that you speak for everyone.

    Take care and inspire!

    ~E~

  • @lloyd614 - Don't sweat the haters. For those of us that don't have "typical" or "traditional" schooling in classical music theory, this type of instructional vid is GREATLY appreciated.

Sometimes you just "feel" what the music is doing - To hell with the terminology! And sometimes people have their attitudes so far up places where music can't be heard that they forget music SHOULD be felt, regardless of how you spell it in a text book.

Keep ya head up...and HOLLA! *lol*

  • @JoeGancher on the contrary the deffinition of something being disonant is litterally the need to resolve and they do occur in 2nds and 4ths but mostly in minor 2nds and 7ths (7ths can be a real bitch if you catch them in the wrong spot ... like major 7ths ew! know what i mean? lol) but the need to resolve or go somewhere is what causes the so called tension and the feeling of suspense. So he is very correct in his statment, he knows what he's talking about he's just putting it in simple terms

  • @roostercooster Simple terms to the point of what though. All anyone can take away from this is a couple of people singing, quite nicely I admit, but there is nothing instructional about it that I can see. I don't know what they are singing and I reckon nobody else does. If they do, then they wouldn't need any instruction.

  • err, you know at 2:08 u said a word like "carsanas"...how do you spell it? Cheers

  • @incomplete1957 consonance

  • @localazn208

lol, u beat me to it :)

  • @incomplete1957

    It's 'consonance' i.e. a stable harmony

    Peace

  • Hahaha!

  • Ear screeching..

  • Thanks! I don't know much about music but I love it. "Dissonant Harmony". That's a term I've been trying to find. Isn't that what I hear in "Dream a little Dream of Me"?

  • I feel so weird smiling at my laptop screen with you guys :] but its worth it.

  • at 5:15 my teacher said it's like a sentance. the first harmony ended with a full stop and the second ended with a comma or colon. :)

  • You guys sound amazing together!

  • You guys are lovely. You should make records and have babies together.

  • @hotlinklarry LOL!!!!!!!!!! That was THE best comment I think I may have ever received....HA HA HA! I will let Janeen know. =)

  • @hotlinklarry R.O.F.L.!

  • So it seems that the difference between consonance and dissonance harmony is that the consonance is a straight harmony and the dissonance is when the singers add all of the special effects. It seems to be unpredictable.

  • when you are in the middle of singing and you take a breath for air, do you breath out of your nose or your mouth?

  • @decook Hey there...I normally breathe thru my nose, but occasionally I breathe through my mouth.

  • You guys are so much fun!! Entertained while learning!

  • How do I work out the dissonant harmony?

I think I can only work out the 3rd, 5th and 7th... maybe the 2nd...

  • I have to agree with Raunruffin. You are both talented, but that's not really teaching. Before showing harmony we have to go to the theory and explain what thirds, fifths or a scale is.

Nothing personal. I am sure you cover those with your students. It is just missing in the video.

    Cheers!

    Helvio

  • @helviolc well, maybe Erik explained it on his earlier videos? This is lesson 26...

  • I like the fact that the clip is entertaining despite it being a tutorial. Kudos!

  • hey wassup. Is there an instructional dvd that I can purchase to help out the choir at my local church? I am interested in furthering my singing knowledge

    ~E~

  • Are you going to talk about food or harmony? ...I hate broccoli ...
