This car really does rule. Last of the "Proper" turbos. Don't get me wrong, liquid cooled turbos have been great (996, 997), but the sound of an air cooled twin turbo Porsche, is truly one of motorings best sounds.

Was about to purchase a 997 turbo 2yrs ago and drove a 993 turbo. The 997 was a beautiful car and faster but the experience was numb compared to the 993. So I subsequently purchased a 993 tt with 45k miles and had the engine rebuilt with upgraded turbos, pistons clutch, varioram plenum, not plastic etc and now has 580hp @ 1 bar! Much faster and more responsive then the 997 and a much better driving experience, Also a coil-over suspension! Look forward to tracking it

Shop a used 993 turbo versus a used 996 turbo. Same mileage, condition, options, etc... and the 993 will almost invariably cost some 30 to 40% more. It's incredible how well these things have held their value -- unless of course you're looking to buy one, in which case it's frustrating how well they've held their value...

Just purchased a 993 TT Arena Red, with 32K miles, I am completly satisfied. Incredible car...even after 13 years still a wonderful ride. Fully upgradable if one wishes to do so, but mine is staying stock. Car still fetches $65k plus...Find one quick !!! :)

Best 911's are the 930 turbo, 993 turbo and 997 GT3. I also like the 996 GT3. That said, I can't really appreciate any other 996 trim, especially the GT2 and turbo as they are plain ugly.

@getin348 Nah... The 993 interior is the right interior, the shape of the chairs, and of course the beautiful classic dashboard. These things are as classic as the 911 exterior. I agree that the 993 front end is a bit awkward, but other than that, everything is perfect. I sort of like the 996 very first iteration with amber directionals in front and back, in silver or yellow color it looked stunning. But as soon as they started updating 996, it lost its appeal to me...

The 993 seems so small now compared to the modern 911's. The 911 is starting to turn into a GT with the Boxster and the Cayman filling the slot of what the 911 started as-a compact sports car.

If my Service technican tells me "keep this car (993 4S) the new ones are build much much cheaper" things are clear for me.

Wiedeking took over when Porsche as nearly bankrupt, Wiedeking goes and Porsche is owned by VW....not much of an achievment in my opinion.

You think 911 is good? It's weight distribution iw 63/37, far from optimal 50/50. It take enormous resources to make a car like drive well. I wish they'd drop it and make a front engined car with a gearbox in the back.

The only problem is that not a lot of people know how to drive a 911 correctly, myself included. People hammer it too soon, at the apex, which normally is optimal for 50:50 cars. However, in the 911, this leads to laborious understeer, followed by snap oversteer.

First, Porsche already tried that. The 924, 944, 928, and 968 all had front engine/rear gearbox layouts. They handled great, but didn't replace the 911. Second, Motortrend dubbed the GT3 "the best handling car," followed by the cayman, which has 50:50 (almost) distribution. Richardsthom is right. The GT3 will crush the m3 in handling, even thought the bimmer has 50:50. The 911 is the classic sports coupe, so think about what you say before you go trashing it. You car is nothing better, no doubt
