@MrTommo101 You know how long it took to reload a musket from the period? It took about 30-60 seconds for the average soldier. With excessive practice, 30 seconds and below. Now, let me remind you that the soldier wants to be steady while reloading for precision and non-malnfunction. So, lets tie it all together, while your being hacked at and soldiers are bumping and falling into you. Now, would you give a damn about whether you were shooting or fighting with bayonets?

How do you get these duels anyhow? I have stuck it on max for most of the settings and my men still seem to act like they are in earlier games. Do you have to fight certain faction v faction (i.e. not European v American natives)?

They may not look as nice but they're a hell of a lot more smooth and satisfying. Moving units, ESPECIALLY charges, is just really weak in Empire. Hell, oftentimes these animations don't even go and enemies just kind of drop dead. I guess what I'm trying to say is, have some elephants charge in Empire, then do it again in Medieval 2. It speaks for itself.

@peanuts846 hopefully shogun II total war will come across your idea as a good one to put in their game. Like, if some bowmen are trying to run through the trees or something, and you watch some push others out of the way, or trip over a root, or knock into a tree. Screw-ups would be entertaining to watch for sure

You should include one or two from a battle with native Americans... seeing a native American catching one of your trained soldiers on the chest with a hatchet is just amazing!

I once had a redcoat who was perhaps a level 4 veteran, jump up on top of the trenchworks, and kill literally 20 east indian guys while his unit only had like 15 guys left. If I could bestow people with medals this guy would have received the victorian cross. He was a bamf. (a fresher unit from the opposite flank rescued his unit before he had a chance to die) This army's general was a bamf too, which helped.

Wow, the duels are actually quite good in this game. Only thing that bothers me is how they just watch their comrade getting killed in front of their eyes, but hey, games will develop further. In a few years all of the battles will have no preset animations but the units will use a system like Natural motion to fight.

No, Black and white had animations quite similar to the ones of Empire, they weren´t quite as advanced (did natural motion even exist back then? I think not, but I could be wrong). I´m preety curious about The last Guardian, where there are no big armies, but a single creature and some soldiers they said that it will have full physic support. For battle. Could be awesome.

@SangerZonvolt yes i know right i think the same thing i mean if ur comrade is pinned and ur just standing there wouldnt it be wise too stab the guy whos gonna kill him too prevent a casualty... but then again they prob dont do that cause then it might render melee fights useless has in if u charge the enemy and pin them down then the enemy owns ur guys while theyr ready for the final blow meaning its has if they charged u

@SangerZonvolt however i would like it if they made it so that an allie can atleast help with the fights... like not entirely help has in murder the enemy while hes going too stab somewon but atleast make it seem like theyr working togheter then in the end the game chooses who dies and who won like it usually does

@SangerZonvolt I agree with you. It is kind of annoying how soldiers stand and watch, but you have to remember how complex the targeting system and the animation preset is for melee. I like your idea of a "Natural motion to fight" but I think that might be extremely hard to make, because you would then have a near endless amount of combinations to take into account, but I could see this occurring in the future.

Well, Natural Motion worked well in Backbreaker. And if it can work with over a dozen guys tackling each other for a ball (which I think is more complex than just killing each other) it should be possible for other generes too. The only limitation I see at the moment is the actual speed of the PC/Consoles, but as the grafic seems to reach it´s limit, further ressources could go into animation and A.I.

Dueling is a cool feature in a large melee, but sometimes just ridiculous. Those cases are usually my Line Infantry or Elite infantry up against some militia or one unit against another more heavily depleted one.
