@LVB1770 Well, the 1st Etude Op.10 is indicated Allegro, that´s kind of a difference.
I´m writing from a composers view: a performer should try to match the imaginations of the creator ... and when Beethoven wrote "Adagio sostenuto, Alla breve" he certainly had something in mind. So how fast/slow is "Adagio sostenuto Alla breve"? Try to conduct it in two - and you arrive somewhere between MM 34 and 36 for the half note, which is fine and brings out the wonderful melodic structure.
musicspotAT, I was joking! I have studied this movement extensively and understand what you are saying.
Czerny Beethoven's student said, " The alla breve measure being indicated, the whole must be played in moderate Andante time." I have a master class on this by Schiff posted in my videos. Google "schiff guardian beethoven" to hear his master classes on all 32 Beethoven Piano sonatas. Thanks for your feedback. Nice to see someone who understand tempo indications.
Since I´m a composer I often have to deal with the problem „how to write it down clearly“! Interpreters often won´t care for many details, just play it as they like it – even in times when using a metronom indication is standard - and the results can be very frustrating (or sometimes gorgeous ...!). The worst I´ve ever experienced was a peformance of a piano piece of mine which should be between 4´50“ and 5´ - and it actually had been played in 3´40“ !!!
Too slow! remember:Alla breve!

@musicspotAT, Right on! Someone who gets Alla breve! I should have played it faster to
bring on all the haters! Maybe next time I'll play it like Chopin's Etude Op.10 #1!

Eyzeday, math, WOW. I hate math! Props on the eaching credential! I'm still playing drums but mostly
focusing on piano, especially Scriabin. I'm going to get back to teaching music lessons more often.
