  • the best part is right after van kills it he just stumbles off stage without saying a word to the crowd

  • This song ALWAYS reminds me of my 1st boyfriend. He passed way to young but this song reminds me of my first kiss, my first love, the boy I was allowed to go in a car alone with..... RIP Jon and thank you so much for this awesome song!!!

  • I heard from someone who was there that V.M. spent the concert in the audience in a trench-coat or raincoat "scowling" or whatever, which just usually means from a rock reporter that Mr. Morrison was merely being quiet. That means he wasn't backstage all evening where the cocaine was notoriously laid out for the guest performers. It might explain why his performance stood out so very much that night.

  • I love the amazed, happy to be here, look on Robbie Robertson's face, towards the end of this, as Van does his"high" kicks. I guess it's a bit like watching a bumble bee that, they say, shouldn't be able to fly. Odd looking, clumsy and totally, totally wonderful. Such a marvellous antidote to x-Idol.

  • Van the man! This is such a great movie and everyone involved is an excelent singer but I think Van steals the show with this performance in my opinion! Also who ever voted thumbs down needs their auditory receptors reconfigured...

  • bottom line is....He is Irish.

  • who ever hit thumbs down fuck you and you no idea what good music is

  • @MrCameron4620 take it easy. they probably just finger -farted. It's less than 0.005 -peace

  • Turn it up......that's enough.....so ya know it's got soul....

    Otherwise....it's Really wrong,Really wrong,Really wrong...

  • Another high water mark, full of energy and passion, ART!

"I long just to hold you in my arms...."

  • normally he is pretty shy, but in this gig he is really extrovert. i believe its because of he magic of this concert..

  • @Patrick272012 Believe it or not, he had to be pushed out on stage for this performance. This is at the peak of his stage fright. Simply amazing.

  • lol one person missed the like button to the right a little

  • Lets all thank heaven and earth for the Belfast Cowboy, he is as sweet Tupelo Honey and Gloria(ous) for a moondance but lets not forget THE band.

  • @dinsdale88 LETS NOT FORGET THEM

  • some dumbass hit dislike who would do that hes probly 14 and likes boy bands

  • van KILLS IT... best performance on The Last Watlz by far.

  • I love the looks on the faces of the guys in the Band....30 years on the road....and the joy on their faces backing Van Morrison as he just KICKS it Professional musicians happily practicing their craft

  • I love the looks on the faces of the guys in the Band....30 years on the road....and the joy on their faces backing Van Morrison as he just KICKS it Professional musicians happily practicint their craft

  • my names emma rose!!! i love this song so much! my sister always plays it for me!

  • This is the most joyous, life-affirming thing I've ever heard. My spirit soars!

  • We all know,Van stole the show....

He started out slow, then he let it all go...

Justa one more time......Justa one more time..

  • This may be the best performance in rock history, not just of the concert. The perfect singer backed by the perfect group helped by the perfect horn section on the perfect night.

  • This is the best performance of the night, followed by Neil's Helpless.

  • This is music not like the crap today

  • @jazwantb96 agreed.

  • Van stole the show with this performance. Allen Toussaint's horn just kicked the whole tune up another level. Fabulous

  • Extraordinary performance ,powerful, soulful a unique talent by a true artist who through his music has stayed at the top of his trade .No gimmicks or hype just quality Van is a unique talent that should be cherished.

  • Blackest white man ever.

  • such a good concert, but no wonder why considering the film was directed by scorsese

  • Van, the Maaaaaaaaan!

  • Can't help but feel the soul in this. Can't sit still during it. Impossible. Love, love, love how your sound reaches in and connects to me, Van. Every voice inflection - so seamlessly in sync. How can anyone not feel good after moving right along with where you can't help but go. (I'll speak for myself, but I never tire of his creative and fresh sound.)

  • This is absolutely the best performance of Caravan by Van Morrison...I can listen to this everyday and never get tired of it....I have read some information about Van and his fear of performing...he had struggles with that and at the end when he is kicking is legs up...I believe I read that he was sort of saluting himself for getting thru the performance....Love you Van...Van the Man....

  • van got the feeling

  • Can't beat Van the Man! I watch this dvd every year on Thanksgiving as a tradition.

  • Now THAT is an exit.

  • Shivers up my spine as my spirit soars.....

  • The highlight of the entire Last Waltz film, in my opinion. Go, Van, in your sparkly purple suit.

  • @jillelswick Easily the best performance of the show

  • @sbhoselover followed very closely by Joni Mitchell performing Coyote! :)

  • @jillelswick I agree

  • One of the greatest live performances ever.

  • Robbie Robertson's commentary on this DVD is worth its weight in gold, and on Morrison's performance, here, is hilariously sweet. Love you Robbie. The energy and love they gave in their performances and to their guests is what keeps me ever watching and enjoying it. Love you too, Van-THE-man.

  • Saw it years ago, his style, feel.....are so great, that the lyrics don't matter. It blew me away, the entire movie is filled with great performances..I bought the movie and it is a classic. Bob Seger names Van Morrison as a major vocal influence. Till I read that I'd never noticed, but listen to how Seger sings, and you'll hear that influence now and then....

  • yea try autotunin that shit, the machine would explode

  • So you know it's got soul . . . .

  • Turn up your Ra-dee-O! love it.

  • Sickest version of this song by far, love it. Saw him at the hollywood bowl when he performed Astral Weeks fully. Also performed this during his first set.

  • THANK YOU VAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT

  • This is a special moment in the history of music. I've rarely witnessed such amazing synergy among singer, band, and crowd. It's transcendant. This is what art is supposed to do. It takes you somewhere else and reveals the possibility of the human spirit.

  • i just saw this great movie (the last waltz by martin scorcese) and run to see van the man again ^^

i have to say WTF?, Van just left the stage after the singing with atitude...really burn the place down

PS: could someone please bring this wonderfull person here to Brazil??

  • @thayannebe maybe he could sing at the opening ceremony at the games?

  • Van Morrison is one cool Mother F***er......

  • What a singer!BoysaDear!!What a performance!Just Stellar!"

  • saw van "the man" do this song and a lot more a few years back in a mates concert (it was a "mystery concert"). it was really cool being that close to "the man".

  • The band invited him on to do what he did: burn the house down. ( That's why they call him 'Van, the man'. )

PS. If you don't think he did, do yourself a favour and don't pretend - people will only snigger at you, if you do.

  • Posting Respect... He Says 'What Will We See?'

  • Turn up that radio

  • Cocaine's a hell of a drug.

  • I see your [name of notable rock vocalist], and I raise you Mr. Van Morrison!

  • wow fucking wow van rocks!

  • The single greatest live song performed ever =)

  • As I was saying, George Ivan literally steals the show from The Band for the moment at least, and isn't it wonderful to here him scat like a jazz singer at the end of this thing...a performance for the Ages, of course, within a performance for the Ages, so glad they captured this on film

  • @PhillySouth He stole the show? How did that happen? His drunkeness and assholiness? He was a clown on that night and you know it. Forgotten lyrics is scat? You are on dream land, my friend.

  • Yeah...I'm sure Robbie Robertson & Co. felt really resentful, and

the audience felt cheated...NOT!! Maybe your problem is you do

not "get" Soul...Morrison's performance was masterful, down to

every utterance and gesture...not a move out of place...your animus

towards Morrison belies your attempt to establish any cred with

your criticism...a big-front end discount to any you have to say going forth

  • @PhillySouth You have never been in a band. I'll do ya one better, you have never been near Philliy. Eat my fuck.

  • how is there a "dislike?"

  • how is there a "dislike?"

  • Van Morrison manages, in the space of only one (1) song, to upstage The Band

at their Farewell Concert, and for a brief couple of minutes, take over the focus of the proceedings. That takes some doing....

  • Damn this shit is great!

  • he could sing yankee doodle dandy and blow it up! van the man!

  • How Ironic a guy saying fuck Canadians under the video of Van Morrison playing with THE BAND, one of the greatest bands of all time, who are from Canada... you are a douche. And who wants to argue after watching this? What a brilliant performance!

  • Look its God with a microphone!

  • Does anyone know if there's a way to hide comments? I feel obliged to glance over them, but I'm afraid they're making me stupider.

  • @Bowser287 I second that, I just wasted half the video reading it!!

  • I referenced my age not as an "Hey I'm young and like older music" comment. I was refering to the fact that I would of loved to have been at this concert, but it was before my time. I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Van as a kid, so, yes, I do in fact know about him. And by world peace, I meant my own, personal, immediate world. What makes me want to puke is people with serious cases of web negativity. Perhaps you should take your own advice.

  • @609bean "I do in fact know about him." Doubt it.

"And by world peace, I meant my own, personal, immediate world." eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew! Man I'm backin' down you just gave me the chills...

I give. You're too deep for me. Ha ha ha ha.

  • Van The Man! Love You!

  • best live performance ever. i'm sure many would debate, but that is how i feel. i love the expressions on Danko, Robertson and Helm when the little purple Irishman goes in to his Rockette's routine. beautiful fusion of rock and soul.

  • This shows when he's on his game, which unfortunately doesn't happen often enough, he's the best singer on the planet.

  • Van was on ! dunno if hes ever off though ha

  • simply put...the best guest performance, during the best concert ever...

  • What I would give to have been at this concert (little before my time- I'm 27) Van Morrison= world peace :)

  • @609bean Ha Ha Ha, too funny. Van = World Peace Ha Ha Ha, too funny. You know nothing of Van. People who post shit like this make me want to puke. At any age. Just shut up and enjoy the music! Van one of the GREATEST musicians in modern history and I don't say lightly.

  • @dnteatylwsno I agree. i hate th epeople who feel it neccesarry to post their age too.

Honestly i don't vare how old you are. That means nothing in music

  • @BlueRevival Great minds think alike. Let the music flow.

  • I love Van Morrison.

  • Van may have enjoyed a cocktail prior to this performance, but what do I know?

  • good music is still being made... but for some reason mickey mouse only wants to sell sexy boys to pre-teen girls with their daddy's credit card. FUCK THE MUSIC INDUSTRY! Pick up a guitar, a bass, some drum sticks or an organ and start playing. At 43 I am buying my first bass! Through music we can all find peace!

  • @RatDog67 Why is everyone so hostile to music that is marketed to young girls? Why not just accept that the stuff is not intended for us, and let the little girls have their harmless thrills?

  • @akikohannri niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

  • I bow to Van

  • When I'm having my Thai grade 7 math students doing project I allow them to play music and music videos in the classroom. Teacher always will bring in this video clip. The performance blows them away. Astral Weeks at the Hollywood Bowl shows "Van the Man" still has years of soul left in the voice.

  • Of all the concerts of all time, this is the one I so wish I could have been at. Anybody who made this gig has surely witnessed, in Caravan, one of the greatest vocal performances in musical history. The song remains, fresh, soulful and incredible and transcends musical era's.

  • @MrJackdonohoe I saw Van live on summer at Glastonbury and I laid in the sun (it was meltingly hot) and cried my eyes out due to how this man make me feel with his sublime genious - I love this music so much - he is the one artist who delivers on all levels, what will do when he is gone? I thank my lucky stars for having discovered his music!

  • @MrJackdonohoe I heard him in '89, and also once owned the "It's Too Late To Stop Now" album. Neither performance of Caravan were a patch on the one from The Last Waltz. He never topped it. But in fairness, who ever could?

  • @TheSanityInspector

I like its too late to stop now much more.

  • My favourite live performance by far. I love rock, soul, jazz, blues and death metal and this performance is by far my favourite because of the amount of passion van morrison puts into it.

  • Probably one of the greatest concerts of all time. If you haven't seen the DVD, buy it, rent it, watch it, you won't be disappointed. Van Morrison is right on, along with many other top singers and musicians of the day performing at "The Last Waltz", The 'Bands' swan song in 1976.

  • It makes me so happy that Van just so happened to have a purple sparkly suit. I am an unfortunate fan in the fact I did not get to see this side of Van live. I do hope to buy some tickets for a Van show soon.

  • I f I could only ascertain the exact drug cocktail that he was on this night. Then you'd know I'd have soul.

  • Some big names there on The Last Waltz.....ol' Van stole the show...oh . yes he did

  • Absolutely incredible. I had a huge smile and goosebumps by the time it was over. Thank you for being such an amazing musician Van Morrison. Good music never dies.

  • In the future when I'm a billionaire + the invention of time travel = this night.

    Swear-to-God

  • Van the Man is awesome!! This performance shows his amazing talent as a performer. Eric Clapton says this is one of his all time favorite performances

  • The Last Waltz is a wonderful concert film with many amazing and brilliant performances but this just chews up and spits em all out!

  • undeniably fantastic performance ivan shame about the rab c nesbitt vest

  • Thank you...wonderful!

  • Thanksgiving Day 1976, and Van didn't even want to perform

...(see wiki/Van_Morrison) , but it was magical.

  • this used to be so corporate to see on youtube what has happened?

    absolutely wonderful!!!!

  • wonderful have'n seent this for a while Always thought it was fantastic

  • the last minute of this is priceless!

  • @zeta517 Amen. He's so fantastic here that it's hard to believe he has something of a stage fright problem.

  • 3:56 is epic

  • 197*?

  • There used to be a time where music had soul, singers knew how to sing, musicians could play anything and everything with feeling, and concerts where directed by Martin Scorsese.

  • @Marrerodrumming crappy bands like U2 and Oasis and Nickelback spurred on the complete commercialization of rock/pop in the late 90`s.Its not 'lets make a great rock album " anymore its"lets make all our tunes commercial so we make more money".Monotone vocals(no range) verses homonymous with the choruses(bad songwriting) and unremarkable instrumental breaks (lack of musicianship, also dont wanna put-off the older cd buyers with solos) its kinda pathetic really,no Art ,just cheap entertainment

  • @PAULOcbi Hey! Bono is telling us how to live! Without him, Sean Penn, and al Gore, the human race would be lost! Plus, I need a bunch of douch bags telling me what to do. Don't you?

  • @Smackdaddy9 yea especially when Bono pays 6 figure salaries to friends and family from a charity fund that donates less than %10 of their donations to actual charity.Sad ,

  • @PAULOcbi But he's TELLING you how to live! So you know how. I'm not sure what I did before he got rich and told me how to live.

  • @Smackdaddy9 yea well that goes to show you what a pretentious twat Bono is.Freedom is a foregone conclusion these days ,we are subject to the socio-economic woes of our govt. the same as our ancestors who left Europe to escape the same thing.Funny .

  • @Marrerodrumming

You hare damn right! no we can listen to Lady Gaga and feel the same...this is the time when look and effect are most importants then music itself.

  • @Marrerodrumming Yes....then scorsese included his liberal-ass politics into his documentaries and the rest is history...what a great talent, but a stupid human being.

  • @nsra1933 "scorsese included his liberal ass politics" so i guess it would have been fine if it would have been "conservative ass politics" huh...its his flim u stupid motherfucker ...maybe one day youll leave your mom's house and get to make you own film and include whatever politics you please...by the way ..i had a hard time understanding your post...try taking Glen Becks dick out your mouth and maybe i can understand you better..."liberal ass politics"...pure first grade recess shit

  • @matthunterrlf your mother tasted good when her cunt was in my mouth..

  • @nsra1933 so you performed cunnilingus on my mom...what the big deal about that

  • @matthunterrlf exactly my point

  • @matthunterrlf You have an incredibly small mind fellow. You need to travel and see the rest of the World. The U.S. is becoming more and more irrelevant to the rest of the World and you're helping it along with your simple minded arrogance.

  • @nsra1933 YOUR A FUCKIN CANADIAN...and your gonna attack and American director over his PERSONAL politics...fuck you and mike myers...and john candy..go watch a hockey match...or game...or whatever its fuckin called

  • @Marrerodrumming 4th time tonight , so 'liddle it' love Van but this is so real ..

  • Pretty bare-ass naked way to open a vocal presentation. Van was super cool at the start and end and great as usual in the middle

  • Van "the man" Morrison is a beauty !!!!!

  • ok this is a WHITE IRISH GUY.

  • @THESOULbornold

Born in Ireland to Scottish parents! xo

  • LEAGEND

  • this video is amazing. Van the man at his best!

  • I love this man's singing--sooooo good!

  • Very good footage.

  • i have this orig c.d.

  • Perfection caught on tape

  • wow....

  • I love this song, he has soo much soul.

  • if you don't own the last waltz, you really don't know much about music...

  • Van sings his ass off in this version. My favorite by all means.

  • Anyone know if the Band ever did a show with the Dead where they jammed together?

  • @rotagen5 Yes, in 1974. it was called Watkins Glenn. the Band played a huge outdoor show with the Dead and the Allman Bros Band with about 600,000 attending. . At the end of the concert all three bands jammed together.

  • it is not completely clear from some of the explanations. this was The Band's last concert which was filmed at The Fillmore West. Guests include Bob Dylan, The Staple Singers, Neil Diamond (Robbie Robertson produced some of his albums) among others. From memory, this is the only song that Van plays on. so do not buy expecting to see a lot more Van. that being said, it is phenomenal and well worth finding.

  • @blueheatjeff The concert was held at Winterland, not the Fillmore West. Van did perform more songs than this but this was the only one that made the film.

  • @pac401

fantastic knowledge. how do you know this? it looked to me like he sang the arse out that song then fucked off

  • @Juckie00 Read Levon's book "This Wheel's On Fire". Van performed the song "Tura Lura Lura " with Richard Manuel before launching into Caravan. He also came back out to sing "I shall Be Released" with all the artists at the end of the concert. You are right, he sang the shit out of Caravan then left the stage. Look at Robertsons face after he left, he's as surprized as anybody the way Van left the stage.

  • @pac401 I thought I also read somewhere that at first Van were reluctant to go out and literally had to be kicked in the tail to get out there. If true, the kicker should get thanked for helping with this great performance.

  • @RayNDeere Van was afraid that he would tank since he hadn't performed live in a few years. during the concert and before he went onstage, he ran back to his hotel to change his clothes and came back with the bizzare outfit he wears in this video. This is one of the few times Van showed any real emotion onstage before or since.

  • so electric = )

  • much like Harry Chapin, he looks so average, but is WAY above average.

  • Great tune, great show, great post. thanks

  • Great show, great tune, great post. thanks

  • Love it!!

  • Love it!!!

  • for all of those who dont know where this clip came from, buy a DVD called 'The Last Waltz'. its from a band called, funnily enough, the band. this was their last gig and it is unbelievable!!! highlight being ' The night they drove old dixie down'. Enjoy!!!

  • holy crap, a video with 32,000 views, 88 likes and 0 dislikes. amazing, fitting that its this video.

  • Turn it up!!!

  • 4:34--classic..a thank you,the mic hits the floor with a final kick and a finger in the air...van has left the building.....oldschool showmanship at its best..

  • @southwestjohnny Van is my guru...but I do get a chuckle out of this one. I hear that he was somewhat tipsy, and the kick is sort of clumsy. Glad he didn't fall. My favorite live version is on It's Too Late to Stop Now 1973. Would have loved to be at either in the audience.

  • The Band is very good, and the horn section towards the end is great.

  • Saw Van at the Gorge in George, Washington last night. WOW! A great 90 min of my life was the result. If you ever get the chance to see him.........GO

  • This is the best part of the movie! Levon Helm said Van Morrison really saved the concert. Well the concert as a whole is pretty amazing, but Van the Man really does bring the soul!

  • damn, this gives me chills. Van and The Band, killer fucking combination
