  • 6 negative feedbacks? Stupidity must be airborne

  • Man, they need to bring these guitars back. Seriously some of the best Squier has ever put out.

  • @TanzanianPeaberry haha, check out new fender pawn shop series, one of them is exactly the same as this great squier, but the fender logo makes it cost ~1000 bucks more ;p

  • Great review! This is the best review on YouTube that I have seen; this video also made me decide to find on of these great guitars : )

I bought an '05 sunburst model for $175 plays/ sounds awesome!

    Thank you for the video!

  • Man I love Squier '51s!! I have 2 of 'em. I like 'em stock. I'm not going to do any mods to mine. I love running them through a Tube Screamer into a clean amp.

They have such a sweet tone!! And I'm normally a Les Paul guy.

Your video here is an excellent demonstration of how great they sound.

Good job as always Rotren. And Happy New Year from dcooper830!! : )

  • would like to hear Albert Lee ripp away on one of these squire 51

  • I can't believe how popular these guitars are among modders. Cant wait to try a used one.

  • What is the weight in this guitar?

  • @twiggyh4x

    VERY ligth, i've got im.

  • @ConsolexHack - Thanks man! Does it keep good tone because of the light weight of it?

  • @twiggyh4x it's the way how you play. it's not really like a les paul. it's a all around guitar =D. i play blues and funk with it (the best sound of alllll the guitars) and i play hardrock (really nicely sharp slash distortion ;D). and with my band backdoorreapersband) i play PUNK! it's a amazing guitar, i have 4 guitars; -accoustic - Epiphone SG - VIntage les paul - This one ( '51') and this is defenetly my best =D
  • @twiggyh4x it weighs less than a fender strat surprisingly its thinner than a strat too

  • i love this demo. It show that all you need is a GOOD guitar and amp. Ultimately, the tones will come from your fingers. This is proof the 'great' doesn't always mean 'expensive', 'boutique' or 'American'. i've owned nearly 30 guitars and the 51s are amongst my favourites.

  • This video alone has made me decide I want one.

  • I always enjoy your vids. Thanks.

  • dude, those are sweet. i love the sound! i want one. where do i get them for the 99$ price everyone is saying?

  • Are you familiar with the telemodders page? there is a small army of guys dedicated to this guitar, and making some killer mods to them. google it and check it out. really cool stuff.

  • I have 2 Squier '51s, both blondes. one w/ black pickguard and one w/ white. I have played so many expensive guitars in my life, and my all original (black guard) Squier '51 is my favorite guitar I have ever had. People think I'm crazy when i pick it up before my American Strat, but the thing just rocks. best hundred bucks i have ever spent.

  • I am a future user of Squier 51 XD

    Whit DiMarzio Area 61....

  • i am buying my reissue 51 tomorrow for 100. i can't wait

  • I know what you mean

  • opening lick=audley freed

  • I think this is the greatest cheap guitar I've ever found. I'm so glad I have one. Now, after hearing you play, I'm locking myself away to practice...

Thanks for posting a really enjoyable video.

  • Great playing and tone!

It's a shame that they discontinued the '51. I have a nagging suspicion that we'll see a fender version a few years from now that costs eight times as much and somehow doesn't have quite as much character.

  • i thought the bridge pickup was a bit thin, but this was one hell of a guitar.

and i suppose youre right. Im trying to fill the hole this left in my heart with Xavieres.

  • Fantastic. :)

  • I sell this guitar !!!

    Send me a message.

  • wow, you sound great..ever listen to Robben Ford? I feel like you would like that guy..I wish I could throw in jazz lines like you do..Im more of a blues and major scale guy I guess, I throw in harmonic minor too..For some reason my brain rejects theory a bit and its maddening..

  • Wow, great playing. Just very musical. Love those jazz licks in there.

  • I have one came to me from someone who bought it online and said they hated it. he said 75 bucks and its yours. I figured If I didn't like it I could use the parts for other projects.

I adjusted the string height via the saddles , checked the neck (it was dead strait) and I sanded the back of the neck with some sand paper (this sorted the ends of the fret wires being too sharp and smoothed the neck the way I like it)

then I adjusted the pick up heights and put some quality strings on it.

  • its amazing how much differnce just setting a guitar up right can make. and no cheap guitar is set up right new. mind you most expensive ones aren't either.

I have another one that has lace sensors in it a red blue dually and an emerald neck pick up and a few other mods.

the stock one has only one mod , a white tusq nut. my only compalint about the 51 stock is the soft plastic nut, a 15 minute job to fix

  • yeah , sounds good mate!!

  • i love my '51...got it at a pawn shop for 55 bucks...talk about a deal man

  • I could honestly listen to that sound all day, it sounds like clapton, change the world at 3.20

  • Nice work out. You must have been under the influence of some A grade coffee.

  • wow rot, really like ur skills and style. . .thanx for the many posts keep rockin ^^

  • rotren proving tone is in the hands. Great playing and sweet tone from inexpensive instruments.

  • $100 Canadian that is. That's probably like $85 (?) american dollars.

  • I bought a sunburst one with a good quality gigbag for $100 the other day. :) It has a GFS pickup in the bridge unfortunately, and it's crazy hot. I kind of hate it. Otherwise it has great playability, I love the tall frets, its lighweight body and great tone in the stock neck pickup. Gives you a Fender Mustang Vibe. My only complaint is that the pickups are hot. These guitars are slightly overrated, but I have a USA and MIM Strat and I have to say my Squier 51 is equally loved.

  • i see the forum on your computer...your browse shredding :L

nice SRV style lick in there.

  • Anybody know what he is playing? or who rotron sounds like, i would love to improve similarly to him! thanks for any help

  • a 300 dollar Yamaha PAC 112 with some duncans is a better choice

  • Nice. I've got one of these too. Only thing is, the frets stick out bad. I'm thinkin about puttin a mighty mite 70's style strat neck on it. Other than that though, I can get more of a hendrix sound out of it compared to my US hwy 1 strat. lol Anyone in the market for a really cheap guitar, find a 51. #1 guitar for the 130 price range. To bad they're discontinued... What the heck was fender thinking??? (squire)

  • Comment removed

  • fuck, the 51 sure can deliver a mean punch..dammit! beatiful man! your playing helps me escape reality!

  • just bought me one of these today at a pawn shop for 60 bucks i love it......i just have one question did yours come with the black pickguard or did you put that one on

  • Nice tone Rotren, I would love for you to play through a fender superchamp just so I can prove that tone comes from the fingers for a majority of the people out there.

  • you´re the best guitar player on youtube.

  • check out carl verheyen, he will blow your mind!

    rotren rocks tho of course

  • My wife brought this 51 home to me one day and I've been playi'n it ever since! The only thing cheap about this guitar is the price! Over a period of about 35yrs. I've owned several Fender guitars and this one play's as good as any high dollar fender and in some cases better!

  • This guitar is amazing...

  • I bought Squier 51 after watching this video ;) Great cheap guitar!

  • is the neck pickup standard size or is it a little bit longer because it is tilted?

  • VOX and you is a perfect match. ;-) but i would pay to hear you bluesing on a hughes&kettner

  • great FEEL

    greetings from Poland :)

  • hey man ... it´s fantastic ... :) you´re so good:)

  • Great value guitar, but I believe the good sound comes from your fingers, and not your gear ;)

  • i beleive its a little bit of both

  • Goddangit that sounds great.

  • did ya replace the pickguard or just take it off?

it kinda looks like some old kramer or shred guitar w/ out the pickguard...

i think the tones are good on this cheap-o because the p'ups are mounted to the body not pickguard...

  • Different pickguard

  • 2 questions:

    Where'd you get that pickguard?

    And...

What are the settings on your amp?

  • man thats a sweet amp :)

  • wow, it's a great tone. I think I used to underestimate this model because of its ugly body style, it looked like a Frankenstein guitar. Now that it's discontinued... I discover its great sounding!

  • I think most people like the vintage look of these guitars.

  • the original guitar has the coil splitter or you added it by yourself?

  • It has the coil split by default.

  • Love my squier 51s. You make em sound even more awesome, you dolphin st. vids are the reason I got one. Action is beautiful and the neck is so nice.

  • Thanks! Glad you like it.

  • YOU ARE THE BEST ! ! ! WOOW !

  • Thanks a lot!

  • Gday mate its me again how are ya, just interested in that bluesy sounding Lick what chords are the 3 of them at the times of 1:22 & 1:23 sounds good. Thx again mate your a Legend. Hope to hear from ya

  • E, G#7#5, A7, D11

  • Haha, do you remember which one?

  • Hmm, either Tweed 4x10 or Blackface 2x12.

  • I've never commented on one of your vids, but I wanted to tell you that your demos using the AD50VT made me buy that amp a couple years ago, I love it.

Are you using the same amp model throughout this vid? I can never get my Squier Tele Custom to sound as twangy as your '51 in the opneing 0:40. I have a humbucker in the bridge position, but it doesn't have the split capability.

    Thanks

  • Thanks my friend! Yes, I am using the same model trough out the clip.

  • the fastest reply ever!

i did not anderstand what you said...

i was going to buy that one but i bought an affinity strat!

  • you sound excellent! nice amp!

  • Thank you!

  • that was really nice and squiers are good guitars, although some dumbasses say not. if you've got a gibson doesn't make you a guitarist.

  • what map is this, cant read, is it vox or engl, killer tone, great talk to me, i got a marshall club an country combo, like srv used in early 1980,s, soon hope to get it on here, is desighned after fender twin, beautiful, very rare 100 wTT KILLER AMP,.PEACE,.

  • It's a cheap modeling amp, called Vox AD50VT. It is one in their Valvetronix series. Cheap, but good sounding. It has a preamp tube.

    Thanks man.

  • Nice playing and a great guitar!

  • Thank you my friend!

  • rotren please tell me wot ur playin at between 1.17 and 1.33 ive been tryin to figure out and i just cant it id really apreciate it thanks :D

  • I change it a around a bit. First E, Bsus4, Asus2, then E, G#7, A7, C/D

    Hope that helps.

  • Man that sounds great. Too bad they don't make these anymore. Are there any other similar guitars like this?

  • Thanks! Don't know of any guitars like these.

  • Further...the only thing this Squire needs is some polishing of the ends of the fret wire which is a little sharp..Again..If you are a player...and you havent tried this little sh*t....you SHOULD!...It will BLOW your tits right off your chest!.......Sounds like it should be $5000.00 not $125.00! It is sincerely F U N!......A cheap date, maybe, but it PUTS OUT!

  • Agreed!

  • I'm a Fender player primarily...Tele mostly...I have a couple Les Pauls and Strats...excellent amps etc...I bot a 51 Squire for fun and I thought it looked cool...This little guy is a BLAST to play!..VERY good tone...and BALANCED...MUCH better than a USA Strat 40th!..Was going to 'use' it and hot rod it..but it's just fine as is!..I should have bot a couple more!..I'm serious...this little bastard is one of my favorite guitars for 1/20TH the price of a Les Paul!!!!!

  • I like the sound of this. I'm not good at guitar and don't want to spend loads on one, so i'd be quite happy with a squier 51. However, are they any good for heavy rock an metal? I have a Roland Micro cube

  • I can get a good heavy rock tone with the humbucker pickup and a vox da5 (another small practice amp).

  • just picked one up on ebay for $115.00 it's the best guitar I have bought in a longtime especially for so cheap. I love it!!!

  • Mmmm, just picked one up. Payed 120, and I have never felt this good about a guitar purchase before (i own 7) I've bought nicer guitars, however, the money I had to drop on them made me feel like shit. Not with this baby....I would have been happy to pay far more (atleast for the tone, maybe nnot for the craftmanship)

  • that's sounds really good I love the tone of the guitar you can really hear the sound through the wood very good playing did you modify it at all except the pickguard

  • What are the settings on your Vox ? Cause i have the AD15VT and i'd like to know how to get this kind of sound (i have an LP like though).

  • You wont be able to get that sound. Unless you buy a Tele-like guitar, or the '51. Actualy anything with single coils would help you.

  • Actually, everything is in the tone. The kind of wood the body is, the neck is, how its put together, how much paint (too much deadens the sound), type of strings, all the hardware on it, the electronics of the guitar. There are 100 things that can change the tone of the guitar.

  • Actually, Steve Vai himself says that he got the exact same equipment as Eddie, set it the same, but still couldn't get the same tone. He came to his house one day and he realized that each person plays differently.

  • the tone is in the fingers not on the gear if you know what i mean. expensive gears may help you get the tone your looking for but it just boils down to one thing, your skills.

  • No lol. Tone is in the amp and the guitar... PLAYING is in your hands, don't mix them up.

  • you obviously clueless...tone is in the finger u say haha

  • Believe me, if you can`t play the most expensive prestige named guitar will ever help! The guitar does NOT play for itself. What comes to Squires, they are of amazing value. You will have to check and set up intonation (proper string length beetween bridge and nut), pick-up height and angle and choose right strings for style you aim to play. A good amp won`t do harm to any guitar.I think these videos already prove all what i`ve just written.

  • i've found over the years that the main enemy of tone is too much or harsh treble, and that the sound of basicly any solid state amp can be improved by rolling off the treble a bit and avoiding 'clipping' volume levels.

  • sometimes it takes years of playing to get tone no 2 players have same tone ever even on same equipment ,,so you can make tone or you learn to make tone,,uam not a great player but i got tone ,,well i been told that atleast..hahahah cya sound great man btw you got tone..awesome good job

  • Hej Hej !

jag hörde att du lirade lite ifrån låten "Pride and joy" skulle inte du kunna lägga upp en video lektion med den låten ?

  • Det finns redan - kolla in dolphinstreet . com

  • Quick question... is the neck heel squared off like a tele neck or rounded corners like a strat neck? I'm trying to replace the neck with a strat neck but I don't know if it will fit properly. Great tone btw.

  • 軽やかで素敵

  • I'll bet 100 bucks the store didn't set it up properly (God forbid squire to set up their 100 dollar guitars) and you just thought the guitar sucked. I own a 51 and it's not as great as my american strat... but then again, i've never had it set up properly... am I making sense or do I need to just go to bed and catch up on some much needed sleep?

  • yeah i get it. i don't hate squiers blindly--actually to me they're much more consistent than the MIM fenders--but the particular 51 i played was trash. (it was set up ok but the strings were ancient, which i guess might have been the problem)

  • Just for the record - the only effect used here is reverb.

  • Ther are no crappy guitars, just crappy players!

  • nice. a good guitar player could make any crappy guitar sound awesome..

  • To the guy who said...."pretty horrible tone"????

What are you talking about you idiot.

This guy has tone to die for.

  • Your just wrong mate.

    Cat Stevens?....Paul McCartney?....

    oh yeh!....

    real "monsters of tone" them...

  • I love that guitar, after watching your video I've bougth one. Check my viedo to lisent it.

    Realy good video nice player.

  • Hey man, nice playing!!!! But, what do you think of the Squier '51 strat? is the quality good?

  • Thanks - it's a cool little guitar of decent quality. Not as good as a Fender but it's unique and has its own sound.

  • They are awesome. Very unique and an array of tones to them. I got 2 actually. For under $200 they are a steal

  • I have a 50th anniversary squier strat with 22 frets, is that unusual, i think they are amazing value, mines got a lovelly tone its wonderful what the chinese can turn out for such a low price.

  • nice playing, nice guitar, pretty drawn out though. More of you showing your playing and not so much demonstration of equipment

  • EXCELLENT!!! Really sweet tone! And great playing!! You have done a fantastic job of demonstrating the Squier 51!!

  • nice punchy sound to it.

    i love valvtronixes, i own the 100.

    -thee elliot mitchell

  • There's nothing wrong with these Squier 51's.I use one with an Epiphone Valve Special & it works for many

styles: Rock,Blues,Jazz,Pop,Reggae,Country, etc. You get a great sound for the price!

  • I already have the Vox, perhaps I should look into one of these guitars....

  • Very nice!

  • i wouldnt get a squier...

  • i have a strat but im buyin one of these in a few days just because there awesome for the money, doesnt matter if its a squier

  • Nice player !

    Nice amp !

    Nice guitar !

    Nice blues !

I will buy this amp and i already have a squier 51, i would like get your sound ! Can you send to me switch buttons ? (treble, middle, bass) Thanks you !

  • WOW , Great tone ! Awesome playin' too !

  • I have a Vox AD15VT And it also sounds great!

  • Very nice player !

  • A great sound and some pretty good licks ;)

Very pleasant to listen to !!!

    5 stars for me !

  • man, your so cool

  • valvetronix isnt an all tube amp. it has 1 type of valve in for the sound of a tube amp, but not the power

  • crappy guitar but awesome playin!

  • I have been playing for twelve years, gone through many guitars. though I still have 9 different ones, my cheap mexican fender strat is my favorite. I have a gibson es335, a dan armstrong lucite guitar, and an ibanez js1000, as well as my fender strat on the electric side, and two acoustics, two basses. trust me. more dough does not equal a better guitar. ask anyone with live as well as studio experience.

  • yeah mexi strats!!!! what pick ups do you have on them? and how much?

  • Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it!

The Valvetronix is well worth the money. Very versatile, and the same goes for the Squier '51. I usually use the Tweed 4x10 or the Blackface 2x12 for clean tones.

  • It's so refreshing to see someone on this site that can really play.

  • What is your 'amp' setting? Black 2x12?

  • Cool idea, blah, I gotta try that! The Vox amps are nice for the price.

  • Get a Vox Valvetronix 15w and use it for a 'front end' (plug the headphone out into the input) of a loud, clean all tube amp. Tone heaven, and no more 'blanket over the speaker' problem of using just a Valvetronix.

  • I have a squier 51, and I love it, I was also thinking about getting a Ad50Vt, I just wanted to know is it worth it? Like is it an amp that I'll have for years?

  • oh yeah, for what you pay these are great amps, i have two :)

  • Squier '51s sound through pretty much anything, even my Squier SP10, just not the distortion :S

  • I wish i had got the Ad100Vt.. I wussed out and got the Ad50Vt and even though its loud at large gigs I'm driving it to its max just to be heard. I need more head room goddammit! wont be doing too many big gigs just now though so im fine.

The amp is so awesome for tone though. You could just sit there for weeks and every hour you could get a new

    sound.

One in the eye for line 6 ;)

  • yes of cours no i see

  • is it a squier telecaster?

  • Its funny, I was looking at getting a Vox Ad30Vt and whanted to find out what it sounds like, and I found your site on google featuring this video after I had already seen it, so im definatley getting it now :D

  • ive got a squier with a peavy 158 rage amp it gives it a beautiful blues sound.

  • I've had my '51 for a good few months now, and I have to say, its the best guitar I've had to date, and also the cheapest

  • once you get a good with a squier and a good rig keep it don't change it

  • Very Good!! Nice amp too I have the VT100 and I love it. Keep on cranking the tunes.

  • nice playing, wish i could play that

  • I play a little slide yes. Not so good at it but it's fun.

  • It's amazing how good Squiers can sound when you run them through a good amp.

    Do you ever play slide?

  • a bad guitar can sound good through a good amp. but not the other way around.

  • no, it can`t. said with 45 years of experience. All you equipment and prestige freaks, get real.
