the Pixies version? Thanks but NO...sorry, I thought it was atrocious...but that what some people said about Santana's version of PHOTOGRAPH...and I love that...
exactly - no one comes close. From Buffalo Springfield (mr soul, expecting to fly, on the way home) to Crazy Horse and all those great and even public rejected records like Time Fades Away and Tonights the Night .. Neil is the Man.
Indeed. In fact, I seem to remember on the lyric sheet for "After The Goldrush" (in the good old days of vinyl), Neil had that track listed, then wrote in parens (maybe next time). I was one of the lucky people, prom night in 1974, who was at The Bottom Line, when Neil did an unexpected guest shot and played all of the upcoming "On The Beach." It's now a sought after bootleg.
Peter - Nice bit of trivia: "maybe next time". Maybe Neil was waiting for a time when he could screw Geffen, I guess. Man Everybodys Alone could go on any record and it would be great. Baby, that's hard to change .. sooner or later it all gets real.
You are so right.. wish you lived next door and I could play you all of his rarities and great songs. Never meet too many women who love Neil. I love Neil cause he is deep, probing, not afraid of being real and morbid, and a very clever wordsmith and the melodies are the heart of any good song and Neil has a hundred or more great melodies; maybe John Lennon might come close but Neil is the best songwriter I have ever heard and he's been coming to me for such a long time now .. my fav. song.
If you look in my profile, the picure there tells you where I've been for more than 40 years, and to have David Bowie cover this song, as many, many others have with many other songs, just means that Neil crosses nearly all genre's of music.
Does that mean no one can touch him?
I don't know, but I respect the fact that you think of him so deeply, that you are speaking from the place from which he has brought all the great music into your life.
This song is my all time favorite but not this live version - it's just OK. Neil's first solo record produced by Jack Nitzsche made Neil's voice and guitar work PERFECT. David Bowie and other versions include Neils just always fall way short.
I've been waiting for my "Last Trip To Tulsa" for such a long time now. Please Please Please do that for us someday Neil, so that someone can at least upload it to youtube. Thanks stagesofcoma for sharing this one with all of us.
This is amazing. I didn't know this song was Neil Young's originally... I first heard it from David Bowie, in the Album Heathen (Feat. Dave Grohl on Guitar)
there is a song that was sung by a woman. I don't the title but it went something like this, "I've been waiting for you, " that would be the starting of the chorus. I realize that it's a long shot, but if anyone can help me, I'm sure it's some one from
hear the background drone/the murmur and the moan/still the lonesone high wail/hank williams ghost, stumbling along time's trail/ Neil singin' about a woman to save his life~
This VERSION is not NEARLY AS GOOD AS what is on Neil's debut record in 1968 which was produced by Jack Nietzsche. Jack jams on piano while Neil plays a great guitar and it's orgiastic. I've Been Waiting for you in one of my top 10 fav songs of all time. Eerie, spooking and beautiful which is hinted at by the live version here but not achieve.
@stagesofcoma Nice to have some truth. I'm not saying it was insensitive of rebel2rebel to rave up Bowie's version but I am sick of everyone talking up everyone but Neil who does the best version of my favorite song of all time. Yeah I know the lyrics are no Powderfinger but the song just knocks me off my feet and you probably have the best live version on YT. But I love the studio version by far but sure visually you win and the extended guitar solo is great. Thanks for this masterpiece.
@stagesofcoma Hey what about the Pixies version surely you could have that up on this site I don't understand the problem ?? What is your problem? The Pixies do this best .. ok enough satire. Take care.
It is hard to believe, indeed. Pretty much the only reason I know is because I'm a Bowie fan too and I obsess over knowing the years each album is released. O.o
I've been collecting and listening to Bowie since the "Ziggy," days, and feel very fortunate to still be around to, hear him cover this song, especially in the manner he did it, no changes, just a hard driving sound, with a soft voice, maintaining the beauty of the song.
This is one of Neil's best short songs, in my opinion. I love the big opening chords and thought-provoking guitar solo. I first heard this on his album when I was a student at Kent State U. and it has set the tone for my life. I WAS looking for a woman to save my life at the time and I found her a few years later in California. I know how it could be tomorrow because we are celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary this November. Thank you, Neil, for planting this seed in my psyche
I´ve seen Mr. Neil young one month ago in Spain-Europe. Tears of happyness are still on my face. Do you know that Neil´s going to start a tour in the USA& canada in three weeks?
Song with Crazy Horse no less--WOW, thanks SofC 1,000,00 times. This song gets to the Heart of it All! What lyrics-- Neil bares it all and plays it. So f---in good--one of the themesongs of my life.
arretedemetanner- check out the last song on the dvd Heart of Gold and you'll find the Old Laughing Lady rendition that will make you cry. Priceless recording
I've always thought the Crazy Horse versions of this song from the 2001 tour were 1,000,000,000,000 times better than the one from Neil's debut album. It just sounds like it was meant to be played just like this.
Wow! Thanks soooo much for posting this! I love this song. That 1st Neil record is much overlooked, and this is one of the best songs from it. This version is awesome. I just wish that Neil and friends would've jammed on it for about 10+ minutes (hee hee).
I agree! It's an amazing album. My god, though, he is *so good* live. It's really difficult to decide which version I like better, lol. A ten minute version of this one? That'd be, whoa. :D
Looks like the Horse? Great stuff. Thanks!

You mean the overdub-city version on Neil's first album?
I liked the fact a producer (Jack Nitzsche) could make Neil sound pretty.
Sort of how they prettied up Nirvana enough to make Nevermind.

Dude, come on, the studio version had a warm ethereal
retrospective tone to this song. You didn't feel that?

From Young's first, and selftitled album, recently covered by David Bowie, on his 2004, or so release, "Heathen."
Such a beautiful, and powerful song.

Still, it's hard to believe it's already been 6 years.
