Can someone explain why on my NES in level 19 i barely can move pieces to the left or right? When I'm in 18 its all peaches and cream, but when I go to 19 the blocks simply hardly can be manipulated and fall DF-DF-DF-DF-DF-DF-DF at 300BPM. Even starting at 19 gives me time to make one or two rows and thats it...
Congrats Jonas on world championship. I didn't even know about it until just now. Perhaps I will compete in the next one if for no other reason than just to see where I rank.
i have been practicing for a while on 19 and have gotten to about 270 in about 80 lines before death and am committed to joining the 999,999 club. much respect
if you are wondering how to do it. there are two ways.
1) stack for tetris in the center, and pray for a few Is ina row (unlikely)
2) stack for combos in the middle, with a 2 or 3 wide hole on level 28, so you can place multiple tetrominos in the middle, and hopefully clear 10 lines (more likely)
How do you hold the NES controller when you play? Do you use a normal 2-hand style using your thumb or do you use the index and middle fingers of you left hand to control the D-pad?
Sorry, forgot to ask something: if you use the normal 2-hand style, are you left handed? I'm right handed and I can tap the D-pad a lot faster with my right thumb which kind of sucks for Tetris.
I play 2 handed and am right handed. The trick is to not tap the D-Pad. Always hold it down and only tap for placements that are only one or two spaces off-center.
Also, another relevant stat is what I like to call average line timeliness:
When the build is setup for a tetris, I start counting how many pieces come before I get a line. In theory, it should come on the 7th piece on average. In this game, it came on the 5.06th piece after the board was prepared. So the outcome was a bit lucky it would seem.
I wonder if Twin Galaxies would accept this. You should really capture the audio and whatever criteria they require. Their top acknowledged score is less than 999999. If I could do this I'd have to have the record on the books. I have the DX record for Ultra mode points/lines. All they want is a recording (I sent a VHS) of you turning on the machine and playing through the record - you don't have to reset every time you lose either.
Sick beyond belief. It might be the most difficult accomplishment on the NES, period. I was playing level 19 last night actually, and tied my record for **two** tetrises. Every time I play I just try to get a tetris and that's about all I can do. I think my line record is 60. It's the f'ing left wall - you have to be holding left so far in advance of when the next block comes in order to get it over there. It's maddening! Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if no one else has ever done this.
This took so long to get on video. I was horrified by the quality but it gets the point across. Playing nothing but level 19 for weeks made me much better.
This is so fake I couldn't even begin to fake it

I finally broke 200k starting at lvl 19. Next goal is getting to level 29 from 19.

I finaly got to level 29! Hilarious how fast the blocks fall.
CrannBethadh 3 years ago
Very well done! Yeah the blocks fall way too fast at that level. Its as if the developers are saying, "OK you're done now."

okay, now for the true ultimate challenge. beating level 29. :)

Impressive as always Jonas, I was 1 tetris away from the maxout. Ended up with 977,xxx. Sick video, keep it up.

I would disagree with the 'no tapping' sentiment, but the results don't lie, awesome job.
However, I am curious how you fare in B-mode Jonas.

I took level 19 height 4 down to 1 line to go and busted. Didn't have the patience to pursue it, but it is definitely possible.

Ignore that last post. I did a complete analysis of this game.
Tetrises: 34
Triples: 4
Doubles: 12
Singles: 60
Lines: 232
Ave time between scores: 4.2 sec
Ave height before scoring: 7.9
A height of 12 before scoring was the max, and it happened only once at before the last score.

Nicely done!

I had to get some more stats to satisfy my morbid curiosity.
You had to wait at most 18 blocks for an I, and at the very end! 7:30-7:44 You must have been sweating that!
You had 7 more I blocks than any other block, so that's pretty lucky. You had to wait an average of 4.881 (st dev 3.6) blocks between I blocks.
And the all-important left wall height was 5.52 ave, with a max of 11 attained 6 times.
I stayed up all night trying to get 100k, and my best was 98,800. :((

Couple other minor little stats, not that I am obsessive or anything:
The left wall height stayed static for at most 11 blocks, not counting the very end.
Ex: 3:09-3:16
Most consecutive of same block was 3, happening only twice (with O and I blocks). Two consecutive happened 28 times.
Biggest string with only one I block was 28, but some of those were level 29 blocks.

If I counted correctly:
Tetrises: 36
Triples: 3
Doubles: 12
Singles: 55
I think you got 232 lines, right?
Nice job getting out of trouble at the end and getting that last tetris FTW.
I like the tetris at :56
CrannBethadh 3 years ago
Sorry, those counts are way off, and the score at :56/:57 is a triple.
