True story, I knew a young man, Tony, a total paraplegic. Couldn't talk, walk, or use his hands. While visiting, I played a Larry Carlton cd, to see his reaction. Right away, he mumbled a garble of sounds, only his wife understood. She said that he wanted to know who it was on the cd! A year later, I stopped by to say hello, his wife said, "Man, you made a monster of Tony, he had me buy everything that Larry made, his instructional videos, cd's and all"! Yes, Larry's music IS magic! True story!

Larry is one of the best ever... Good enough to be brought on board to back Steely Dan a couple times! He can Rock and he can Jazz it up with the best. I love this song my fave of his... Add on your list of Jazz Guitar masters, Zachary Breaux who died untimely while saving some one from the Ocean down Florida way. Anyone who hasn't seen Larry live GO SEE HIM! Not only are his shows fantastic, no 2 are the same, even in the same evening from set to set! His shows with Lukather were technically and emotionally genius!

Plus Larry takes time to chat with fans! One time we ended up BSing for a half hr or better, he's just a really, really cool guy! My buddy brought his dog to an outdoor show & afterwards Larry came up & started talking dogs with us!

Larry Carlton, together with fellow "GRP All Stars" David Benoit and Tom Scott played a one-night concert at the ULTRA in '92 or '93, I think. "Smiles" was one of the most awaited songs played. Great tune indeed.

The LIVE version sounds way better than the studio one. Larry is a master and a Genius on the guitar. It amazes me how great this guy sound and no matter who I've seen him perform with, he always seems to shine a notch higher :-)

I totally agree this live version sounds so much better than the studio version. Back in 86 or 87 I listened to this so often when I was living in the dorms in college and this brings back the memories. LC improved on the studio version and it's just so wonderful!

I first heard this tune off his Discovery LP when I was DJ'ing a jazz show on college radio and snagged the 45 of "Smiles" when it was released. Like Emerald said, this is indeed happy music and it's great to finally hear and see LC play it live.

Actually, this tune was from Larry's "Alone/But Never Alone" CD, released in 1986. I have that one. And, I agree with others here that this live version is better than the original studio version.

LC has been my guitar hero for 34 of my 42 years as I fell in love with his sound after raiding my big bro's lp collection only to find out I was listening to "Those Southern Nights" from the Crusaders. Hi jhezmiki123...definitely not bepop jazz. For bepop, think Dizzie Gillespie or Charlie Parker. I'd say this is actually a simple 4/4 rock style, with emphasis on 1-2-3-4 rather than the usual 2-4 backbeat. Also, the bass playing is very syncopated, and nicely done; he plays on a lot of "upbeats". Anyway, just my thoughts.

He is one of the all time great guitar players. I've been buying his music and listening to him for over 20 years. He makes it look so easy. He did an album back in the mid-80's with Chet Atkins too and was on Austin City Limits with Chet. If he and Nokie Edwards would get together. :-)

Carlton did two acoustic guitar albums, Alone but never alone in 1986, and Discovery in 1987. Audiophiles amongst you may know the sound quality is stunning especially on vinyl.
