True story, I knew a young man, Tony, a total paraplegic. Couldn't talk, walk, or use his hands. While visiting, I played a Larry Carlton cd, to see his reaction. Right away, he mumbled a garble of sounds, only his wife understood. She said that he wanted to know who it was on the cd! A year later, I stopped by to say hello, his wife said, "Man, you made a monster of Tony, he had me buy everything that Larry made, his instructional videos, cd's and all"! Yes, Larry's music IS magic! True story!
Thanks Larry, this tune's been embedded in my Soul, whistle it often, and they ask , " what's the name of that tune ?".... I simply say " Larry Carlton, Smiles & Smiles to go.....
As much as I appreciate live music, it's pretty rare that I find a live version to be better than a well-crafted studio version. But this is just superb.
Larry has always been outstanding! I have several of his albums and enjoy the cool tunes. I think this song came out in 1987 or 88 and was an instant hit.
Larry is one of the best ever... Good enough to be brought on board to back Steely Dan a couple times! He can Rock and he can Jazz it up with the best. I love this song my fave of his... Add on your list of Jazz Guitar masters, Zachary Breaux who died untimely while saving some one from the Ocean down Florida way. And Larry Coryell, Al Dimeola & I also like Kenny Rankin thou he is more a rythem player... And a man who even Carlos names as an influance the late Great Gabor Szebo!
Anyone who hasn't seen Larry live GO SEE HIM! Not only are his shows fantastic, no 2 are the same, even in the same evening from set to set! His shows with Lukather were technically and emotionally genius!
Plus Larry takes time to chat with fans! One time we ended up BSing for a half hr or better, he's just a really, really cool guy! My buddy brought his dog to an outdoor show & afterwards Larry came up & started talking dogs with us!
Wonderful jazz. I love this guy. He is playing his heart out. I hope he plays forever. D. J. Flash from the Unity Band, New Orleans..............Peace
fuck me. wots wrong with u people. get over it. ya dont like it? then go and beat ur meat or something. leave us alone. god. the world would be a better place!
Hey, why all the negative comments on this one?! Larry is simply wonderful. As a former drummer, I'd love to be playing with him on this one. To all you guitarists out there, get over it. Larry is way better than you.
what an asinine remark about synching it. of course it's live and it's obvious how he's playing it. i assume this remark came from a guitar player which makes it all the more surprising for its obtuseness.
I am Guthrie Govan and I will NEVER admit that Larry Carlton is better than me. I just won't do it! NO NO NO! he's good but NOBODY is as good as I :-)
Oh but surely Tim you like Guthrie too. I mean come on no one is really the best apart from Guthrie. You above all should know how difficult it is to sound even remotely like you were playing a guitar. Yes Larry rules them all and you are a fucking moron with no talent whatsoever.
Larry Carlton, together with fellow "GRP All Stars" David Benoit and Tom Scott played a one-night concert at the ULTRA in '92 or '93, I think. "Smiles" was one of the most awaited songs played. Great tune indeed.
Sweet isn't it? It reminds me of good times I had in NY. It brings tears to my eyes. God bless you. I love to listen to Larry Carlton. Go to his page in YOUTUBE. He got an award recently.
I LOVE this song...Larry has a great sound. Whenever I hear this on the radio, I always turn it up and GROOVE :) Thanks for sending this to me. Blessings
Amazing guitar player:) I mean Shredding is fine but as long as it's musical alot of people have forgotten how to bring melodic aspects to their virtuosity but folks like Larry Carlton,Frank Gambale,Allan Holdsworth,Steve Morse and a few more to name haven't.
The LIVE version sounds way better than the studio one. Larry is a master and a Genius on the guitar. It amazes me how great this guy sound and no matter who I've seen him perform with, he always seems to shine a notch higher :-)
I totally agree this live version sounds so much better than the studio version. Back in 86 or 87 I listened to this so often when I was living in the dorms in college and this brings back the memories. LC improved on the studio version and it's just so wonderful!
I first heard this tune off his Discovery LP when I was DJ'ing a jazz show on college radio and snagged the 45 of "Smiles" when it was released. Like Emerald said, this is indeed happy music and it's great to finally hear and see LC play it live.
Actually, this tune was from Larry's "Alone/But Never Alone" CD, released in 1986. I have that one. And, I agree with others here that this live version is better than the original studio version.
LC has been my guitar hero for 34 of my 42 years as I fell in love with his sound after raiding my big bro's lp collection only to find out I was listening to "Those Southern Nights" from the Crusaders. Guitar became the sweetest addiction after that...FUGEDDABOWIT!!!!! I swear if this cat was any smoother you could pour him over a stack of pancakes!!! Viva LC sempre!!!
Hi jhezmiki123...definitely not bepop jazz. For bepop, think Dizzie Gillespie or Charlie Parker. I'd say this is actually a simple 4/4 rock style, with emphasis on 1-2-3-4 rather than the usual 2-4 backbeat. Also, the bass playing is very syncopated, and nicely done; he plays on a lot of "upbeats". Anyway, just my thoughts.
He is one of the all time great guitar players. I've been buying his music and listening to him for over 20 years. He makes it look so easy. He did an album back in the mid-80's with Chet Atkins too and was on Austin City Limits with Chet. If he and Nokie Edwards would get together. :-)
Carlton did two acoustic guitar albums, Alone but never alone in 1986, and Discovery in 1987. Audiophiles amongst you may know the sound quality is stunning especially on vinyl.
just got turned onto him tonight. love it, really smooth. No wonder, he's played with Lee Ritinour whom I also love. Nothing like great guitar playing.
this is one of my all-time faves. I saw Larry perform in 1988 and was, by far, the best concert I should ever need to attend. Thanks bmgworld .. for the great video. :)
This is a butt kickin song! I remember trucking through Norwalk, Ohio one early sunny morning on a Saturday as the sun was rising this song came on the radio and as I looked across the lake I was chillin so hard I went on a mind trip to an exotic place in my mind that I'd never been before.
I know this song inside out, so I was reluctant to even listen .. wow, I can't believe that LC could make this song so completely fresh . It's amazing that someone can just "think" a phrase and it's played.... it's more amazing that so little of it is discardable. Thanks Larry, and thanks bmgworld.
