You have reached me and I'm listening. I was diagnosed with type two August 30, 2011 and I am trying desperately to lose the weight. I'm down 25lbs as of October 25. my clothes feel like they have gotten bigger even though I haven't lost anymore weight, but not by much. I have tried drinking more water, cutting back on the diet sodas to next to nothing. I'm alternating swimming and weight lifting every other day. Any advice?
@snnnoopy First start measuring with a tape measure. It's important to capture the differences in a more numerical way than just the way clothes fit. You can rationalize clothes, but you can't rationalize away losses on the tape measure. You could be pushing harder in your workouts causing them to focus on building and repairing muscle tissues, and therefore retaining muscle.
I've been wondering this: When you have diabetes (in my childhood it was called sugar disease), don't you ever wonder, why it spikes? You D's have your blood sugar meters. Please use it for your own health. Find out foods that doesn't spike your blood sugar so rapidly. That's all I suggest. Don't trust me or bowulf. Do your research.
What many of the less intelligent critics fail to remember is that fruit is seasonal and largely unavailable for most of the year. Also, saying that Atkins is no good because when you come off it you put the weight back on is as moronic as saying that you shouldn't quit smoking because if u start again the health risks return.
Two videos I just saw support this topics. "Chow Down" and "Fat Head". I suggest everyone watch these videos. I am interested in doing a no/low carb diet, but am scared of the high fat. I need to lose about 150 lbs and it has always been ingrained in our heads that no fat = lose weight. Thank you for your inspiration and videos. I know you'll be a great help to me in my journey.
I like the way the diet/fitness expert Robb Wolf puts it (paraphrased):
"When the ADA tells people that to lose weight and prevent or control diabetes one must reduce fat intake and increase carbohydrate intake, it would be the equivalent of the American Cancer Society telling those with melanoma skin cancer, that they need to get more sun exposure and a tan."
Carbohydrates are the catalyst behind the blood sugar roller coaster which causes diabetes. Control carbs and you control diabetes.
Bofulf is correct. Anyone of you that wants to do this diet to control blood sugars is on the right track! BUT We should not eat lots of protein because is highly dangerous, therefore if you eat a high fat diet like Bofulf does, you'll lose weight, control your blood sugars, get rid of arthritis, bleeding gums, fungal toe nails, not get illness, and feel great! DON'T DO WHAT I DID, EAT LOTS OF LEAN PROTEIN, its too acidic and expensive! Eat beef lard, raw butter, some protein and veggies :)
@Catherine8raw Good call - there is little reason to select lean cuts of meat exclusively on Atkins. A well-marbled piece of meat is much tastier as well.
@bowulf Hiya.... you know the problems I was discussing, going on about arthritis and numbness of hands, feet, legs ,a rms and burning legs, etc... I realised 20 days ago I have chronic lymes disease I was bitten by several ticks between May-June. I have gone right back on the diet with loads of fatlike lard to help reduce all the symptoms, starve the spirochetes. If you know anything please help. Thanks for all the time you spent helping me get this diet right. With the high fat it works
A high protein, low fat, low carb diet, has given me arthritis by eating too much protein, too little lubricating fats, dried up my joints due to jogging for months on a low fat diet. I tested my pH on high protein = 5-5.5, as an experiment I ate lots of beef lard oneday and found my urine pH8! I am shocked & I have learnt AT LAST saturated fats are good for our health, stops acidity of meat, meat is high in phosphorus = phosphuric acid, which leaches Ca/Mg from bones, prtoein should be 30-35!
Low carb diets cause diabetes . The one sure cure for diabetes is a high carb vegan diet based on fruit . Cousens is the world's leading expert on diabetes and many diabetics have gotten off their insulin in 3 weeks at his clinic on a high carb diet . Pancrease damage from animal fats and processed foods causes diabetes .
@MindofaJedi Richard Bernstein has been listed as diabetes educator of the year and is perhaps more than anyone the leading expert for it. Mary Ross Vernon who worked with Dr. Atkins also is one of the leading experts. She claims within 3 days some diabetics are off medication.
How about you address the multiple studies in the video as opposed to throwing bombs? Show where the researchers Jorgen Nelsen or Eric Westman and Jeff Volek got it wrong. High carb diets led to this disease.
@bowulf Nope , refined sugars combined with a damaged pancrease cause diabetes . Humans are frugivores , this is a biological fact . We have a stomache PH of between 4-5 , all omnivores (bears, boars etc) have a stomache ph of 1 . Humans cannot assimilate animal protein nor clear it from the body effeciently .
@MindofaJedi All yes, the humans are frugivores meme. Mind you while I scoff at it. Your pH estimates are off. I would suggest you do your research as opposed to spouting other. According to bear biologists, "Black bears depend on strong stomach muscles and low stomach ph (3.5) to break down food."
Humans are certainly omnivores and the bacterial fauna in our intestines support that assertion.
So first get your facts straight, then you can start making assumptions.
@bowulf Wow , please do some research . Apparently you either don't understand evolution or language . Omnivore comes from the latin root word for "to do " not "to be" . As far as science goes humans are herbivores catigorically because we cannot chase down kill or consume animals with our natural equipment . Try to take down and eat a cow with your hands . You might as well call humans cannibals because we have eaten each other . Read human omnivore the mythical beast .
@MindofaJedi Yes, God gave man a great tool, a superior brain as compared to the lower beasts. Think how man would have fared in this world without the ability to make/use tools for his various needs. If animals were our equals, they would have figured out how to avoid getting the deliciosity gobbled right out of their roasted bodies.
@bowulf If you read The China Study , which is by far the largest most comprehensive study on human diet in history , it cleary demonstrates that on a 94% vegetarian diet people thrive while their chances for cancer soar as more meat is added . The formula is simple , more meat = more health problems . Carbs from fruit are very healthy , carbs from high fructose corn syrup are very damaging . Most Americans eat too much sugar , so even Atkins diet could provide some improvement . Peace .
You mean the same China Study that showed the linkage between CONSUMING alcohol and smoking LOWERED one's risk of cancer and heart problems. Should I start drinking and smoking now too? That is the problem with epidemiological studies. It shows links without causality. The China Study also showed the link between wheat consumption and cancer to be higher than that of meat.
Guess which one Campbell focused on? I would suggest if you want to evaluate epidemiological studies.
@MindofaJedi (cont.) that you look at one that takes in a multi-variate look at the data and tries to understand it. Campbell intentionally did not, and the results are evident. For an idea of a better epidemiological study, look at the Harvard Nurse's Study that coincidentally also demonstrated that the low carb approach significantly lowered one's heart risk factors amongst over 20000 nurses.
Or you can look at the Italian study that found no linkage between meat consumption and cancer.
@MindofaJedi MY SON HAS TYPE ONE DIABETES SINCE HE WAS 7- DON'T TELL ME THAT HE CAN GET OFF INSULIN ...PEOPLE WHO HAVE TYPE 2 CAN ALTER THEIR BLOOD SUGARS THROUGH DIET. PLEASE BE CLEAR WHEN DISCUSSING DIABETES AS TYPE 1 & TYPE 2 ARE VERY VERY DIFFERENT. IT'S LIKE COMPARING A ZIT TO A CANCEROUS TUMOR...WHEN HE FOLLOWS A LOW CARB DIET, HE DOES USE LESS INSULIN...
@MindofaJedi Do people eating this Vegan diet need to put out a lot of insulin to cope with all of the sugar in their diet? I mean, the high carb content must require more insulin.....which is a good thing???? Low carb diets MAY slightly increase insulin resistance in some people, but, the need for insulin goes way, way down on a high fat, low carb, moderate protein diet.
Yep, I defintely have metabolic syndrome, Let myself go a bit. I Stopped all junk and am exercising, scale does not want to budge. Even 5 years ago, if I would have done the same thing, pounds would have dropped quickly. Thick abdominal fat, high BP, high LDL, low HDL, prediabetic fasting glucose levels if I start eating too many carbs, just to name a few of the symptoms I have. No ones fault but my own. Carbs are very problematic for me, eat too many and I get constant painful hunger. Cheers!
The good news is scientist Jeff Volek has proven that most Metabolic Syndrome can be reversed after a consistent low carb diet -- literally turning back the clock on all the risk factors. Thank you for providing your story here, and another nail in the coffin of treating it with high levels of carbs.
Thank you, I like your vids. I made a new years resolution to get back in shape. Since the 1st of the year, have been low carbing. My bp was 150/100 before I started. It is still little high, but 130/85 is a great improvement. My skin is slowly clearing up and I am able to exercise a lot better. Bad thing is I love chinese buffets and pizza. Cheers!
@zegonzales: Well, I mainly stick to fatty meat, eggs and veggies. I do not eat dairy very often, it causes a lot of mucus in my nose and throat, joint inflammation. I do not really eat nuts because I think I have a really mild nut allergy, I also do not seem to digest them very well. I have a sensitive stomach, so I do not eat tomatoes, gives me reflux. Atkins is really a great diet though. When I stick to it I really fell great, mental outlook if much better. Ciao!
there's a great video on youtube by dr robert lustig "sugar: the bitter truth". his focus is fructose, but carbs overall are implicated. he researches overweight children.
it's long, but a great watch. near the end he shows that saturated fats are not the problem with heart disease, but rather carbs.
I was diagnosed with type ll diabetes earlier this year. I went onto the Atkins NA and after 6 months I noticed a real difference in my diabetic symptoms (there werent any). I spoke to my Dr and convinced him to send me for a 2nd G.T,T (glucose test for diabetes). I came back alll clear and am now officially non diabetic. So, I am living proof that The Atkins diet can reverse onset diabetes, regardless of medical opinion, the diet works. So if you're diabtic... There is hope, Start Fighting it!!
Keep spreadng the good news and never let anyone dismiss your message. It really is more powerful than any video I could ever make on the topic. You have proven and lived everything I talk about, and a shining example!
I am hoping that you can clear something up for me. Low carb products? Yes or No?
For example, the atkins advantage bars taste too good to be true. Are they what they claim to be and we can eat them if we like... Or is it a scam that we should avoid? I am very confused about this issue!
I don't subscribe to any low carb products during Induction -even Atkins bars or shakes. I would much prefer to start learning how to eat real foods rather than use these as a low carb crutch. They can cause stalls in a lot of people. Check out my net impact vs net carb video where I talk about this issue more fully.
After Induction, you can decide for yourself after you gradually (1 per week) back into your diet. The same caution of stalls remains, but you will be able to determine for yrself.
It would depend if you ate dairy and eggs. If you eat both of them, it would be pretty simple as the majority of the fats and protein can come from the eggs, cream, cheese, and oils (like mayo and olive oil) in your diet. The same rules as others apply except you get your fat and protein content from other sources.
For example the quiche recipe I just posted could be made meat-free easily...
Thanks for your research Kent. I'm amazed that so many diabetics still follow the old fashioned way of caring for themselves. They eat loads of carbs, take their meds and wonder why they feel so bad all the time. I'm all for the low carb WOE for diabetes. It works for me to help keep my blood sugars down.
Not on Induction, but on later phases, yes it's acceptable. Just have to remember as you burning alcohol you aren't burning any fat. See my Atkins Diet Quick Hits Alcohol video for further clarification.

Atkins was one of the first to recognize the impact of GI values, but one problem with most GI diets is that they ignore the glycemic load problems. That is it really doesn't matter if the carbs are low GI if you are eating 300g at one meal. The impact can be the same to one's glucose levels.
Hey at some point you are going to get what you get with these highly scientific videos. The others I can do mostly ad lib but not if I want the numbers correct.
Loved ones have been lost in alot of familys. My partner lost his brother over diabetes. The real problem is that in our society we are taught carbs are good in high doses and they are not... they make us obese. In October I was 26 1/2 stone and with atkins and exercise, although I eat no dairy produce, I now weight 18 stone. I am thankful but I dedicate my day to losing weight. I want to get to 9 1/2 stone and hopefully will have surgery for lose skin. Thanks for helping us!
Once again.... another great video.. I love watching your videos Kent,,,,,, whenever I want to "cheat" I just watch your videos..... THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS
I am astounded by the science out there. That 8% low carb vs high carb 80% suffering from CVD over the course 44 month study astounded me. You are very welcome.
Good job! I don't understand how people still can claim this is a heart unfriendly diet honestly in light of all the information out there. There are too many anecdotes like yours and mine, and studies to the contrary. Commit yourself to doing the diet right (no low carb bars or junk food) for 4 weeks straight, and then make your own call.
I've always like your videos but these two about misconceptions is what I needed. I just joined TOPS as a form of support and I was going over some of the sample plans they have and I just hate eating a bunch of low fat tasteless stuff and having to be so regimented in counting the calories. Thanks again man and keep up the good work.
P.S. Great pics, I can only dream of seeing the changes you've seen.
Glad to see you still watching and commenting, Tim. That was what sold me - the flavor on this diet. There is no reason to feel deprived or to go second best for long on this diet. It was easy and simple. (just eat my veggies, drink my water, and in a few months sit less and move more).
You are exactly at the same age I was when I started. Good to see you posting again, and keep believing it can be done.
Had a friend just die after dieting low fat for ten years. She weighed 391 pounds. She refused to listen against what her Doctor and the media said about Atkins.
I definitely could have been that person as well. You go for so long and just try to accept yourself and believe that is just the way it is not realizing you have a chance to reclaim your life back. Sorry to hear about your friend's passing.
You have reached me and I'm listening. I was diagnosed with type two August 30, 2011 and I am trying desperately to lose the weight. Hey at some point you are going to get what you get with these highly scientific videos. The others I can do mostly ad lib but not if I want the numbers correct.

I wish professionals would listen to this. Thye are killing diabetic patients with their high carb reccomendations.

I agree. How many toes or legs have been lost or severe MI happen because people weren't told the truth?

Loved ones have been lost in alot of familys. My partner lost his brother over diabetes. The real problem is that in our society we are taught carbs are good in high doses and they are not... they make us obese. In October I was 26 1/2 stone and with atkins and exercise, although I eat no dairy produce, I now weight 18 stone. I am thankful but I dedicate my day to losing weight. I want to get to 9 1/2 stone and hopefully will have surgery for lose skin. Thanks for helping us!

Keep spreading the good news!

That's some inspiration there.
"You are exactly at the same age I was when I started."
I got goosebumps! Tim, you can do this!
