I always had the biggest crush on Susan the silent. :) For those of you wanting to see the whole movie just wait for St. Patty's day. AMC always plays it. ;)
What a fabulous Musical. The tunes definitely are as good today as they were when they were written. Beautiful, lyrical, happy music that fills my heart with joy. Thanks so much for posting.
I actually portrayed Susan the Silent in my HS musical many years ago :::)))
What a glorious experience that was.
There was no actual reasoning for her lifelong muteness. That's just how her character was written. As Henry briefs in the opener, 'She don't do "talk talk", she does FOOT talk!"
The only fan letter I ever wrote was to Tommy Steele and he wrote me back!! I live in texas and when I was a girl used to spend all Saturday & Sunday at the movies watching him. I fell in love with him, who didn't? Love him still.
Barbara Hancock and Tommy Steele were brilliant in this movie. Their dance to "When I'm not near the girl I love" is one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen. The whole movie is brilliant, though it could have benefitted from some editting.
Tommy Steele's facials are the best!! half of what make his song so wonderful is his facial expressions. that and his voice and movements, so i guess it would be a third but whatever. its amazing!! thank you for putting this here!!!! go Tommy Stteele!!!
I've loves this film since I was a kid my grandad taped it off the tv for me I wish they still made films like this I think I had my first crush on Tommy Steele!
LOL... Randy... I love the way she looks at him all lovely when he's talking about what a galavanting tramp he is! Og was so endearing though you couldn't not love him anyway... :)
So beautiful. I wanted to dance like her. I saw this when I was taking ballet lessons, dreaming of being a dancer --I tried dancing along to the soundtrack, but of course, did not have the choreography. If only I'd had a real teacher who believed in me and who would've trained me! I loved both Petula Clark and Barbara Hancock here --and that cute Tommy Steele.
If I remember, she was sick as a child and lost her voice, harking to the times when poor kids would get sick from things like polio and Chicken poxs.

I loved this movie, but Ihave always wondered what happened with Og and Susan?

"When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" would not have attracted a woman who could hear. XD
But Tommy Steele is boss. I wish "Something Sort of Grandish" was on youtube somewhere

@nicolevsreason She was Susan the silent, not Susan the deaf. But I get your point.

Tommy Steele was Britain's first real rock and roll star :D And now he just happens to be an amazing actor. That is just plain talent.

Whats a bit distracting is that this was clearly filmed in Southern California.

Tommy Steele as Og was awfully randy.
And Susan The Silent's rainy dance is lovely and erotic.

Did they ever explain why Susan was silent?
spikelilgirl 2 years ago
When I checked this up online, the only reason available was that Susan was mute.
leighg5226 2 years ago
is she deaf too?

no, she's just mute
