  • my shih tzu bite and i have to have him put to sleep to get clipped he is old and has a heart problem any suggestions on how to do this

  • You made that look so easy. Why do I keep on making bald spots. Could it be the way I'm holding the blade or the size of the blade. Not sure what the size is or how to tell. I purchased these little dog clippers from Walmart.

  • That's not a grooming, it is a SHEARING! Any idiot could do that.

You should be working with sheep!

  • you are a very good teacher. Thank you for posting this.

  • can u plz do a FULL teddy bear cut for a shih tzu plz

  • What kind of a shaver are you using?? Please tell me the make and model! Thanks for the videos :)

  • Great tips, thanks for the video!

  • i had to do this today to a shih tzu! he normally gets a 5. It took me a looooong time just to get a 7 skip! poor guy his whole face was a mat! i have a question did u do the face with a 7 also or did u use a shorter blade. I used a 15 today on most of the face.

  • @TheLbaeza 10 and 15 blades are the safest route. I used a 10 in the video but there is very minimul difference between the two. ;) I would be careful if you do use a 7 on a Shih Tzu face. ;)

  • i have a shih tzu cross chihauhau. I occassionally bath and trim her between visits to the groomer and I brush her often. I'd like to try grooming her myself but like her hair on the longer side. What blade would you reccomend? Also her hair is thinner compared to the average shih tzu. Thanks in advance

  • @PrincessBrodynne Well, Maybe you should check into some stainless steel snap on combs. They would probably be more of what you are wanting. Petedge.com has a set for around 40$ that you could experiment with and see what length you like. ;) Hope this helps.

  • so can we like shave and then wash the dog?

  • what number blade do you use if the dog is matted?

  • @xebec1958 I use either a 10 if they are really matted or a 7 if it's not too close to the skin.

  • @spanielmom93 hi there, how is the temperment of a cavalier spaniel, I was think of getting one. Do they shed a lot?

  • @xebec1958 Cavies are the BEST dogs ever! :) They are very sweet, and are usually pretty fearless little dogs. They can have heart problems and also have some issues with Syringomyelia wich neither one is fun but if you get one from a reputable breeder who does vet checks then you should be fine. They do shed some but when kept brushed they are not too bad. ;)

  • @xebec1958

o coment about cavs-they re really good tempermented dgs not weird like a springer or cocker.ve never had one come in that wasnt sweet as pie.I have one client that has 5 every one of them is awsome.Id def get one.

  • Also, the mats will felt if the groomer doesn't get all of them out before the dog is bathed. =]

  • can you make a washing video please

cause i have 7 shihtzus and i am not that good

on washing and drying them all thanks xcx

  • our Shih Tzu would have already bit you about six times by now., and another 7 times after you touched her tail, I wish she was as calm as this one.

  • we've got a shihtzu / schnauser mix, and we have started grooming her at home.

so far we've learned that a good pair of clippers is key!

we will be upgrading to a nicer pair of Oster clippers.

What size blade are you using on her belly and the main part of her body?

We prefer the kennel cut for our dog (keeps her looking so much neater, and it's really warm where we live)

  • @jwollam Hi there, I use a 10 blade on the belly/sanitary areas and I used a 5 on her body. ;) Thanks for your comment. :)

  • I just started grooming dogs and I just wanted to say that your video's have really helped me!! Are you going to have any grooming video's for japanese chins?

  • @KeyCityParanormal No sorry, I don't have any Chins who come to me... really you don't do much to them groom wise anyway though. They don't call for much trimming just a good bath, brush and toe nail trim usually does it... maybe a quick paw neatening and sanitary trim that's really all I do to Chin's. ;) Glad you like my videos! :)

  • I'm looking to groom my shih tsu. What kind of clippers do you use (they look like Oester)? Also, I'm assuming I need different metal clip on blades. What kind would I need for a short cut?

Btw, your videos are the best!

    Thanks!

  • @bob1010berger I prefer Andis clippers but the choice is yours. I have a video on clippers and blades if you need more help you could watch that. ;)

  • do you use a 40 blade for the whole body because im about to shave mine for the first time and im just shaving the back, stomach, and legs?? thanks!

  • @crazychicks4life53 NO NO NO the 40 blade is ONLY for the corners of the eyes!! I wouldn't go any shorter then a 7 on the body... 40 on the body would be bald!! :) Hope I caught you before you started!!! ;)

  • how often should i cut my shih tzu's hair?????????

  • @lxGina333xl That depends on how you want to her to look. If you like the short look then you can go as long as 6 weeks in between grooms. If you want her longer or to grow out then you need to groom her at least every 3-4 weeks, and brush her once a week at least. :)

  • is that a puppy cut?

  • Every groomer has a different idea as to what a Puppy cut really is. I call a puppy cut just a basic trim because you usually don't clip a puppy down so no, I call this a Kennel cut. A puppy cut consists of triming the face, feet, and sanitary areas ONLY and usually most of it (except the sanitary) has to be done with sissors because puppies are very skittish of the clippers at first. Good question though thank you!

  • I have two shih tzus and due to financial reasons, started grooming them myself. I don't do a great job, but it works for us! One of them in particular is really, really snippy, especially when grooming her face. Is there anything I can do to make it easier for both me and my dog?

  • Hmmm well Shih Tzu are difficult because you can't muzzle them. Is she snippy for certain things or just everything in general? How old is she?

  • Yes, take it to a groomer. If you can't do the upkeep with 2 dogs, you either should have had only 1 or none!

  • spanielmom93: she's 3 years old and the only one that I really have problems with. It's really just the face area.

joetofalo: I do just fine with my dogs, and I really don't find your comment necessary.

  • I suggest getting a mens shaver if you don't already have one around the house and when just cuddling on the couch with her favorite treat in hand turn it on and get her used to the sound and vibration of it. Slowly message her working towards her face. If she struggles don't let her get away until she has calmed down for at least 3-5 seconds. Then stop and praise and give her a treat. Sooner or later she will associate vibration and noise around her face to the treat/praise and tolerate it more

  • woooow that dog has alot of hair! im thinking of getting a shih tzu baby puppy and how much would it cost to groom a dog like this? and how many times a month do the have to get groomed and bathed?

  • Hi, I can't really say how much it would cost to get a Shih Tzu groomed in your area, youwould just have to call around and check. And as far as how often, the longer you want the hair the more often your dog would need to be groomed, If you like your dog more the length I have done in the video you could go a little longer in between. I would say every 4-6 weeks is a perfect time for any dog. ;)

  • We got our shih tzu for 350. We get her groomed for around 35 dollars. We bathe her atleast once every five days. The longer the hair the more often we do it. We haven't had her groomed since spring and its now almost november we will probably not get her groomed until juneish. She gets cold with-out her longer hair.

  • thanks alot

  • also where did you get your dog from i look in pets stores an they cost 700$ an over?!?!

  • Hollygoodhead..... bathing your dog once a week is NOT good! Once every 3 weeks is fine. You are drying out the coat

  • ok thanks so much :) and last question i promise lol...which brand of clippers do you recommend?

  • ok thanks so much and i have another question lol....how would i become a groomer? i work at an animal clinic now as a technician and i think i want to learn how groom as well but i dont know how to get started :/

  • Another good question! I suggest finding a school if you can afford it and are serious about a career in grooming. If you don't have the money now I would recomend a book called "Notes From The Grooming Table

Developed by 20-year veteran groomer and master stylist, Melissa Verplank" If you just buy the book I would suggest saving money and going to school later. One thing I did to learn was to get a job with a groom shop. They will start you out as a bather and move you up when you are ready.

  • just wondering...is it better to bathe the dog before or after grooming?

  • Good question, I usually clip first (called prepping the dog) then after the dog is clean and dry I clip again (called the finish cut) The hair is too dirty to clip good before bath but if you prep your dog it dries faster and finishes nicer. ;)

  • I have a wahl with plastic attachments. i see you keep changing blades I can't do this, so what attachment do I use to match your #5 would you know? And what blade or attachment if you want the hair a little longer, like maybe an inch or 11/2

    '

  • I honesly know very little about the interchangable clip ons from that brand. Maybe you could contact the company and see if they could tell you the equivalent. I would say though to work your way in from the longest blade to a length you are happy with. So start with the bigger attatchment and then if that isn't short enought go to the next smaller one until you find a length you like. ;) Good luck! Thanks for the comment.

  • Your videos are very helpful thank you!

If the dog is really matted what number blade would you srggest?

  • Thank you! I recommend using either a #7 blade or if you absolutley have to you can use a #10 blade but just be careful when grooming any matted dog because they are twice as easy to cut/clipper burn!

  • isn't it harder on your clippers to clip them before you bathe them? also, can you give me some suggestions for a reliable clipper? i have an andis now, but every time i use it, it keeps cutting off. i think it's from clogged hair or maybe it's just not high powered enough. thanks

  • It is a little harder but you don't want to bath a dog with matts because you can't get under them to get the dog clean and rinsed free of shampoo. My guess would be that you don't have the right pair of Andis. I use the Andis two speed for professional groomers, they run about $120-140. The blades pop off and come in different sizes. I have a video on clippers and blades I will send it to you. ;)

  • Washing a matted dog causes to matts to tight more!!

    .xx

  • You are right, if you have a matted dog you always want to either clip or brush the dog before bath. ;) Thanks for pointing that out. ;)

  • you may not think it but clipping the body is really hard work!

    .xx

  • It sure can be! ;)

  • TY for this great video, is going to help me a lot. I have a Lhasa Apso and is kind of grumpy median size dog (15 pounds). Do you think it is fine he take breaks... or is better I finish soon the grooming... I dont want he can feel I am tense doing this job. :)

  • I would try to do the things he doesn't mind first then give him a break and then at the end tackle the things he really doesn't like then when you are done give lots of praise and treats. ;) Good luck and let me know how it goes! ;)

  • On her body I used a #5 blade. I would never take the body any shorter then a #10. On face and sanitary area's I would only use a #10or15. If your dog is really matted I suggest a #7 or 10 depending on how matted. Yes I do use snap on combs but they snap on over my regular #10/15blade. I can only use combs when the dog is not matted.

  • what size blade do you use? #10? #40? do you ever use a comb attachment?

  • Ok I know that alot of you have watched this video and maybe you are wondering where part 3 is... well it was one minute too long so I have to come up with a way to edit it down a minute... I am not computer savvy anyone have any suggestions???

  • Youtube allows longer videos now. :-)

  • Really? how long and since when? They kept not allowing mine cuz they were a little over 10min.

  • There are some videos like twenty minutes. I am not sure how or what you have to do but you can! :-) I suggest trying again or googling it. If not than just upload your movie into windows movie maker and cut out a minute of video.

  • Yeah I just figured out how to edit so it isn't a problem any more but it is still a pain. ;)
