In the example you gave, kono hon wa hurui, it should actually be furui because the japanese don't have a hiragana for hu. For the OP, other than the mistake he pointed out, your sentence is fine. Note that when the hiragana for ha is either by itself, or at the end of a word (like konnichiwa), it is pronounced as wa.

The word　ふるい can be written as both furui and hurui and it doesn't matter which since the sound is in between a h and an f sound in our pronunciation. The only time it can matter is with katakana and loan words like the name フランク or Frank which wouldn't make sense as Hurank.

Great question, They have been naturally silenced by the laziness of people who have been speaking this language for the last 5000 years. Some people still say de-su but it 99% of the time sounds like des. There are other words like shita sounds like shta. (Means I did. Oh you're gonna learn past tense soon... I already recorded it.)
