I don't get two things. One, how does he sound like Fred? I think his voice does good to the song, it's almost like he's reading poetry, but he gets really emotional with it, which I like. And how are the lyrics superficial and lazy? If you listen to the rest of the album, especially Nobody, Not Even the Rain, the lyrics have good meaning that can be interpreted

La Dispute, has an artistic way of writing and singing. They're not trying to be like everyone else. My opinion is that La Dispute eloquently conveys their music through their intricate and emotional lyrics.

At times, I've felt I could agree with the "superficiality" of the lyrics, but if you take a step back, and accept it as a norm for this album, you see that he does a great job of bringing new life to tired tropes. He's not reinventing the wheel, but he's freshening up a lot of his influences (Edgar Allen Poe is EVERYWHERE, check "Fall Down").

I can agree with you, but it's worth taking some time to examine. He definitely doesn't use these lyrics out of laziness.
