I was at the come back gig at Connellys of Leap where John Giblin on stand up bass sadly Paddy whose place it was passed away earlier this year. But it was a magical time all that love. I also sat in on the Saturday afternoon sound check.
@nolittleboy Would have loved to have been at that comeback gig Peter. I watched an excerpt of it on Johnny Too Bad docu' I had sent to me, only yesterday. John Giblin said John was a bit 'nervy' about it..but he started to play Dont Wanna Know..eyes fully closed. He delivered his magic! I dont think theres many who have the same kind of love I saw from the audience. Ive seen Brian Wilson have that effect, and John Martyn, no others. Both legends. That sound check would have been interesting.

Hard to believe it is a year since John left us. I saw him on many an occassion when he toured in ireland and was fortunate enough to see him just a couple of months before he died. He was back to his awesome best in that gig, and i had the pleasure of being able to say helllo to him afterwards in his hotel. Was a beautiful man, and what sweet music. Keep playing where ever you are John. Love you still.
It is hard, I agree, he was just someone I always thought would be around...even planning to return to UK and catch a concert from him. His death shook one of my foundations, so to speak. It's now over 20 yrs since I saw him live (Sheffield Sapphire concert). But not a day goes by that I'm not listening or trying to play his music.
Was that his very last gig you saw him at ? If not, do you happen to know where/when his last gig was and how he was then?
The gig was on 25 Nov 08 in Vicar Street in Dublin. He was in great form, and played and sung fantastically. I've checked the internet, and as far as I can tell it was in fact his last gig, but perhaps someone else out there knows differently. Either way, I feel privalaged to have seen him and spoken to him that night. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
@ianmcgeachy I'd seen him 8 times over the years. the last of those was in perth-billed as a "solid air "performance' although it was nothing of the kind in fact.sadly enough it was the worst performance i'd seen him give,was v.drunk and at times for whatever reason found him having difficulty holding an acoustic guitar.there was an incoherent rant.but this may not have been untypical thru career?dunno . the time before ,in aberdeen was worried @start he was 2 drunk but in fact was triumph
@echo680 The word always was "hes either 'on' or 'off' " but when he was on he was bloody full on, I think anyone will agree whos seen him like that. He was *the* live act to see in the 70s for sure. Someone else recently said they'd only watched the SAir DVD (the last SAir tour) once, comparing him latterly with the earlier JM was too much for them. Maybe a combination of his illness and the old drink maybe, the Perth night you refer to? He'll always be my favourite performer I think regardless

Weren't those two CDs were out around the same time? I know I played em in my car alternately and have obviously got mixed up enough to relegate me -apparently- to the non-anoraks camp.
