Ahhh - why didn't you write your comment 11 years ago? Then I could have said to the guy, "Hey - don't suck." It might have saved the show! Oh well {sigh}, too late now. ;-}
the acting was shitty. there is no need to act out everything you say, people understand words when you juts say them. Also, you probably wanna learn how to play strait better. great set for a high school though.
OH SO YOUR AN IDIOT TOO! well, trust me i know much more about theatre than you and i know for quite a fact that you get marked down if you underact your words without hand actions and that. PLEASE get a life and post an oppinion on something you acctually know a little about.
omfg this guy makes me want to shoot myself in the head. not bad singing but everything is really overdone and when he sings his prolonged notes you can tell he thinks he sounds incredible and is looking for a standing ovation or something
That is an amazing set. My school is putting this on next weekend. I've worked on our set every weekend for the past month and a half, it doesnt look nearly as good. Our sinks are the secretarys desks/conference table. The only thing I dont like is the projectors. Its a great idea but H2$ is based in the '50s. The set looks very modern and not at all '50s business. If you dont mind me asking, what shcool is this from?
Well done on a great set. Very clever quite complex but works even if some things seem odd like lights around mirrors in a bath room and the video screens are a little out of place for the time and even placement. No offense but it seems like a lot of showing off for the sake of showing off. The set on casters is very good tho well done
A very late answer... The national tour used lights around the mirror... I used lights around the mirror. The tour used at least 32 rear-video projectors... I used TWO!
Check out the B'way [revival] clips on youtube [search "megan mullally"]. B'way used MAJOR video in their set design.
I've been accused of "showing off" several times. Hey, ya gotta keep the local audiences interested with pizazzzzzz, right?
Well you managed to capture those aspects well. Unfortunately what suffers was the most important one to most of us anyway, the cast. Ultimately, that's who you want to see, and not as distant dots on the horizon. But I understand you're saying that wasn't the intent of what you were doing. I just think it's a shame because it looks like it was a really entertaining show.
Production, cast, performances were all top notch. What sucked was whoever shot this footage from 20 miles away, choosing to zoom in only once at the beginning and at the end! Hopefully someone else with a better sense of how to use a video camera shot this performance.
However, I wasn't shooting a "movie" to entertain the masses. This was an reference-archival-video, to show blocking, staging, set and lighting design, etc.
I do the sets, and the lighting designer and I work together to "show-off," as you put it. {Let me pull my tongue out of my cheek.} My goal is to give the actors [and the director] a functional "playground" that has eye-appeal and compliments the action. The set looks like it's all rear-lighting, but aside from the 2 video screens, it is totally wood - lit from the front. Cool, huh? Oh yeah... there is also some cheap PVC piping with some bulbs stuck in it.
eye-appeal? if that's your concept than your're headed for a lot of criticism in your future designs... how does the set enhance the play? by being pretty? how is your set specifically for how-to succeed? it's so "pretty" that I could see lots of shows done it... it is quite nice though
What is your backround? Do you have a theatre backround in sets or directing. I was just wondering. Do you think that this set design does not work or serve the play? Please explain.
It looks like it is lit from the rear because it is! The blue panels are lit from behind it is clear 1. you can see where the main light source is on them. 2. there is no shadows on them 3. people are in shadow when the main only the follow spot is on. 4. you can see when the floor is lit coming off them. The song needs to be angry when sung by the men in the bathroom you can't see that they dislike him other than the word needs acting in songs not just the words.
1. I'm the set designer... and the 2 big video panels are lit/projected from the rear. The rest of the set is lit from the front. It is solid wood. The lighting angle is so steep that the actors do not get in the way, causing shadows. I know - I aimed the lights. It was a bitch!!
2. I don't find the need for angry characters here. The rest of the show sets-up their characters. Ya just don't see it in an isolated clip.
The rest of the show may set up the characters but they sound too happy about something they are worried about. I have seen the show twice and been it it once my self i have seen it done both ways and it really seems much better when made to sound angry and not an upbeat tune
I have read several of your comments about this Hs's work in the past 1/2 hour. You don't seem to be happy. Are you getting enough sleep? Please go away.
One of my favorite songs... done oh so well! - Not just the actors, but the set and lighting. WOW! Tell me - how do you get a bunch of high school boys to hold frozen for 3 minutes?
terrible acting from Finch but the set was decent

I hope in the past 12 years the actor playing Finch learned how to not sing out of his nose for every note in his range.

@Bub1029 Why would a guy in the graphics-printing business need to sing at all?

As well as Hedy.
And.
Vocals.

The pit is good, set is good, I think the hand motions when he acts are fine, but he looks a little prissy.
Good job.

@mavisperducci I think the looking for a standing ovation kind of ties in with the character of Finch in that scene anyway. So, stop complaining?
