  • My german shepherd is a West German working line with a North American show/working line.. She has the straight back no arch. Her parents dont have it either. I have been trying to watch her gaiting very closely, or even just trotting. So far I think she is good :)

  • I LOVE MY GERMAN SHEPHERD!!

  • Dogs that look like this should be taking all the ribbons in the show rings.

  • i forget this dog's name, but it was very long. anyway im glad my gsd is working line and has a straight back. i can't stand show lines anymore. those poor dogs must me in so much pain.

  • @TheGermanShepfan Dingo vom Haus Gero ;)

  • I remember my neighbor had 5 German Shepherds. He didn't even need to lock his doors.

  • In the mid 80's I did my first lecture at school about the German Shephard and showed this video. I remember the teacher and students watching fascinated. Got myself an A-plus. While watching this video again after al these years I realize that a great deal of the lecture was done by Dingo Von Haus Gero..... the dog in this video.

  • Use to be the most beautiful. Now days it is just deformed and crippled.

The dog in this video is running on an angle his back is out he is not running straight.

  • @MRVIPSS lucky there are still pure German bloodlines, the slope body is the American bloodline just for show not the working lines. Some experts consider those American Shepherds not German Shepherd.

  • @MRVIPSS i agree his right paw overlaps on the outside while his left on the inside

  • @leggatt2006 Yes he does. Exactly the way he should. This is the 1983 champion.

  • @leggatt2006 Yes he does. Exactly the way he should. This is the 1983 champion.

  • Now THIS is what the Germans should be breeding to still! What year is this from? 1983? Too bad they had to go and change from what is correct to the horrid roached topline, super-short necks, no shoulder and no rear that we see in their showlines today! Maybe the German breeders need to watch this video--again and again!!

I'm getting my pure German bloodline (Working bloodline) on February next year.

  • @aemroxs1 I have a gsd ( he has no pedigree her mother has but his father hasn't papers) and i love that he has the same proportions of this one, not that shortnecked and strange back that ends in a very low ass , that i see frequently around , and sometimes with a very small head.

  • ohmygosh :o

    Pure elegance, beauty and awesomeness!

    I love these dogs :D

    Thanks for uploading ;)

  • i know this dog's name, anatomie und Bewegungsablauf.Based on the video "Der Deutsche Shaferhund Anatomie und Bewegungsablauf"

  • Anyone know how they recorded this video? I am trying to get a similar type video of my BCs.

  • That is the epitome of a german shepherd. He has TRAD unlike these frog legged "show" shepherd. This video should have more views...at least by James Moses. -cough cough-

  • amazing

  • The complete video shows the movings while jumping too. It's really amazing!

  • This video was taken in Viernheim/Germany in the early eighties. It shows the moving of "Dingo von Haus Gero". We were there with our dog "Apoll von Wanne Eickel" too, he showed the moving at full galllop. The complete video you can buy in the SV shop in Germany. Its title is "Der Deutsche Schäferhund in der Bewegung" (The German Shepherd Dog in movement).

  • i just got a german shepherd and it is so sweet and its already whatchin everyone that gets close to me really carfully and it will follow me and my lab around every where im only 13 but i have had a lot of dogs and german shepherd is #1

  • This is what a GSD should look like

  • What a wonderful gait! Refreshing sight after seeing that horrible documentary. Run dog run! :D

  • My dog moves just like that. But, she is powerful in movement. She is like a powerhouse. Most people don't understand how important this is for a herding dog. And the right temperment to be good at every thing. I love my dog dearly for what she has accomplished and for the breed to be here for us. :)

  • BEAUTIFUL shepherd, a GSD that has the conformation for what it was originally bred for.

  • beautiful animal in looks and in movement!

  • Poetry in motion!

  • Does it surprise you to discover that a male dog actually has a penis? Maybe you should stick to goldfish

  • Without hindering the dog with a leash or a lazy manner THIS is how a PROPER GSD SHOULD move! If the leash and "show pace" is the only concern I CHALLENGE modern show breeders to take an identical video of THEIR dog in motion and then say that the pace is too fast for the show ring and therefore NOT correct--if you could keep pace with your dogs THIS is proper and FUNCTIONAL movement! NOT the half frog, Half Hackney horse types we have now!

  • @DANEzoomies,

I exercise my female on bicycle at this gait and it is approximately 7-8 MPH. Most would be hard pressed to gait at that speed in the ring.

  • @Rikkasdaddy I am just saying, even at a slow pace, the movement should be correct, and many dogs I have seen can barely move 2 mph without the rickety, high stepping fronts and cowhocked, weak rears--they swivel and wiggle instead of having complete coordination--which is the real issue, not the inability of a handler to pace at 7-8 mph--the way I see it is if a dog can't move properly at 2 mph, how can they move properly at 7-8 mph?

  • @DANEzoomies Further, the lope of the GSD can be likened to the ground eating movement of wolves and coyotes--it is supposed to take as little effort as possible and consequently the dog is able to maintain that pace for as long as is necessary. A true test of modern GSDs would be to run them at this pace for 30+ minutes and dogs with good tone, endurance and strength would out-do the hobble hocked variety any day!

  • @DANEzoomies Is it norman for the hind legs to cross over each other at a walk? or is this the hobble hocked you speak of?

  • @DANEzoomies If you see weak dogs that are loosely jointed blame the breeder. It is not the fault of the dog. I seen dogs that are loosely jointed or over angulated that is a case a breeder breeding dogs that are not sound. The gaiting is for herding so the dog can trot all day. My dog can out trot most dogs.

  • When I first came across this video I IMMEDIATELY saw that this dog had to have been from the late 70's! If the afore mentioned name was accurate, then my guess was right--this dog is FAR from the swivel hipped, knock hocked, hackney striding obcenities we have to represent the GSD now--there are still a few out there with this type of movement, but fewer and fewer with all the hip and back modifications we've added to the mix! To anyone scoffing at the pace of this dog...what a COP-OUT!

  • @DANEzoomies look at my GSD birth 03.07.2008

    watch?v=ss_TT2uo1d4

  • Just so some of you understand ... the GSD basically acts as a living fence when flocks of sheep are moving over distances. It does not gait at a human's walking pace. It moves up and down the sides of the flock at every speed, keeping the sheep together as they are being moved. The most important factor of motion is what this dog demonstrates... efficiency of movement.

  • THAT'S what a proper GSD should look like!

  • This is such a simple video, yet one of the most amazing I've seen...

  • Thats how a true shepherd should move long, smooth, fluid and powerful. A truely magnificent breed.

  • to me the german shepherd is the most beautiful and magnifisent animal i've ever seen in my life

  • I...also think so...they are the best of the best

  • that is SOO TRUE

  • @silvrwolf98 Certainly one of them :)

  • прекрасный пёс... мне очень нравится, он прекрасно

    движится!!!

  • This dog is not "cute"... your pet chihuahua is cute, this dog is magnificent and absolutely stunning... As for the "nasty parts" it's an animal what do you want it to do, wear underwear?? Are you so immature you can't even watch a video of a dog gaiting...

  • by "nastiest parts" i would assume you were referring to the trash on the ground? i was a little confused otherwise. atleast the other comments appreciate the perfect movement of the dog.

  • add &fmt=18 for smoother video

  • wow you can just see how powerful this dog is!

  • i dont give a shit about his gate, i just want to hug him

  • This dog has a nice floating gait however I dont see that it has powerful drive from the rear like it should?

  • The power of the rear is in the length of the underdrive and follow-through. This dog is as good as it gets. If you were on the lead behind this dog, you would feel it. Length of stride equals power of transmission.

    High Sierra Shepherds

  • Then why don't they use shepherds to pull dog sleds in the yukon?

  • They have. Years ago there was a fellow with a team of all white German Shepherds. During the second world war, the SS Snow Troops used all white GSD's as patrol dogs, who also sledded in supplies and weapons.

There are draft dogs who do the pull work better. The GSD is primarily a herding dog, which accounts for its temperament, loyalty and versitility in doing so many different things. Best at nothing but second best in everything.

    I love this breed!

  • If length of stride equals power transmitted, then a german shepherd's rear quarters should be the the dominant type in sledding and sledge dogs. It isn't. Therefore there must be something else going on also. It has always been my understanding that a german shepherd had the most efficient stride AT THE SPEED OF A HUMAN BEING. In otherwords, they were bred to walk or jog along side a human and not tire.

  • I agree! If I am trying to pull a heavy weight, I shorten my stride. The heavier the weight the shorter, so a draft dog may be more effecient to this task.

The power of the GSD, in the longer stride is better for the tending function to which it is bred. The draft dog simply could not keep up the pace and speed. We agree!

I see you are a Michael Crichton fan! That make you OK by me!

  • Excelente video!!!

  • I love the slow motion!. Is his male american lines? I haven't seen a german dog trot like that yet. But I may be wrong.

  • German Dog....Dingo Haus Gero

  • i love gsd's, Labradors( i have 1)and golden retrievers!!!

  • Very cool..I own 2 (and have owned GSD's for 13 years) and have never seen a GSD at a run like this. Very cool!

GSD's have their own unique way of moving and I can spot one a long way away just by the movement. So beautiful and powerful.

  • "GSD's have their own unique way of moving and I can spot one a long way away just by the movement. So beautiful and powerful. " << completely agree! This video is like poetry in motion.. Very well done, I get hypnotized by it!

  • That dog's movement is so phenomenal.. I could watch for hours.

Video would have been nice with some music though.

  • I never get tired of watching this dog move. I have a great granddaughter of this dog :)

  • Hey there--haven't seen you for awhile. He is a nice mover, isn't he? :)

  • I am around, hehehe... yes he was a magnificent dog.

  • I could watch that for hours. So beautiful, even if you not into GSDs.

  • Fabulous video. I'm trying to learn more about canine gait and this was really helpful. Really useful to see the overreaching of the hind limbs in the GSD in slow motion.

  • Is it me or is the video suddenly choppy? It used to flow really smoothly and I just viewed it again and it's really choppy.. Is that happening to anyone else... I love this video so much

  • try adding &fmt=18 in the address bar to play in high quality

  • Thanks it worked!!

  • great movment ive seen this movment on a top dog in uk is name ice vom steinhauerberg

  • i dont like show lines but i have to admit this is a good video

  • If i remember rightly,it was filmed from a car.I have the full video somewhere,i'll have to look it out & see what it says!!!

  • Dingo was a superb dog, present day breeders should look at this clip to remind themselves what a true gsd should be like!!!

  • Indeed, and I am sure many do!

I was wondering, is this filmed with the dog on a troting machine, and the background clipped in later?

If not, how the hell did they shoot this?

  • Amazing movement and great clip! Thanks!

If anyone knows who the dog is, please share.

  • Dingo vom Haus Gero

  • Thanks, I was so taken by the vid, I didn't notice that the info was already given above! :-)

  • WOW

  • Dingo vom Haus Gero.

    He was whelped - 16.9.1978 1983 Sieger

  • Does anyone know who this dog is? What a beautiful gait!

  • I have heard that this is Dingo vom Haus Gero. Should have been named "Poetry in Motion!"

  • I agree! He is beautiful, and I hope to get a GSD with a gait like that!

  • Excellent demonstration of correct proper gait . There were comments on the list of this being Uran but the male is definitely not as his pigmentation was different and he tended to fall slightly on his forehand which this male does not

    Morton Goldfarb

  • Wow! Every judge should ask for a loose leash and to go slow instead of allowing a show ring to be a race track!

  • Excellent video for students of the German Shepherd Dog gait. I would like to know the breeding of this dog. Would the owner of the video share this information?

  • yes that is the correct movment of a GSD
