OUR DOGS 4th Feb 2011 "Pedigree Dogs presenter exposed".
Given enough rope Jemima Harrison has finally hung her self by making up a story about one of the most health screened dogs in the country that is co owned by someone that has devoted many years to improving the health and temperament of the his breed. Even more shameful she presented this story to a House of Commons Parliamentary Group (APGAW) to support her stance on pedigree dogs, shame she can't be prosecuted for contempt.
David ...your views are shared by nearly all who are involved in the world of dogs like myself who has been for 15 years and seeing as im only 21-started young!! It is nice to see that people like yourself and Caroline Kisko are speaking out and getting our voice heard!
contin'd from below However those of you out there who believe that all purebred dog breeders, owners and exhibitors are in the wrong and cruel to their, in most cases, beloved pets obviously have a very narrowminded, blinkered view of this sport that many humans and canines enjoy up and down the country nearly every weekend of the year!
I am outraged at the response of some people, commenting on David Cavills video. I am sure they are not aware of how higlhy this gentlemans views are held within the canine world. As David mentions he has been teaching etc for many years and (in other videos) admits there is problems with breeders and their practises, however this is with the minority The very small minority!
Of course you do - and so do I. And selective breeding is a perfectly acceptable way of doing it as so many healthy and sound pedigree dogs demonstrate. There is a great deal to be done in some areas I agree, but it is important to keep things in proportion.
Alternatively, if the failed experiments were part of creating a dog for 'show' for similarly inclined non-dog lovers, then this becomes some sick hobby.
Breeders can change the dog world for all pet owners, I want mine healthy.
There is bound to be a degree of self interest - I would not be involved at all if I did not have an interest and commitment but I do genuinely try to take a balanced view of the whole spectrum of opinion and to rely on the facts. I was a teacher for 25 years. I think I can sift the arguments pretty thoroughly and come to reasoned and balanced conclusions
Unlike Dorothysdogs,David & a great many others talk with knowledge on this subject & realise all the good work already done, DDs really shows an ignorance of this matter in hand & very biased, & is not willing to listen to ANY other point of view that other than her own. Her interpretation of things is skewed & nevers answers a direct question if challanged on a point. The makers of PDE have done more harm in 1hour of TV to dogs than any other thing in 30years as they never told the whole truth
Listen up big time people. The long term damage to pedigree dogs has been done by the show breeders and the likes of David Cavill insisting that inbreeding, small gene pools, use of popular sires are all safe practices. No they are not. Put canine genetics into any search engine and you will get a more balanced view than you will from this man.
If you want to know all about SM go to the our dogs message board on msn groups. It begins by asking me to stop spreading misinformation about SM (which I have not done, incidentally) but continues with a most thoughtful, extensive and fascinating series of explanations and research on the condition. I learned a lot
Ruzzwazz how many times do I have to tell you!!! It is on the RSPCA's own website, under annual reports the one marked as Trustees and Financial they have the last three years you can open/down load!!! no wonder people are gullible enough to believe all the lies on the PDE if they cant look up basic facts for themselves. As I said the RSPCA (and their chief vet) should sort their own house out before accusing the KC.
They are hoarding so much money (and took even more off the KC charitable trust last year) but the spend NOTHING on health or preventative research for dogs (or any other animal). I think that the RSPCA can and do do a lot of good work but they are not always right and they are very POLITICAL, even the KC is accountable to its members, yet the RSPCA seems to behave as if it above everything and every one else. The producers of PDE do not show a full picture on all parts, but a very slanted one
Quote; Humane euthanasia(ie destroyed)7,506 dogs more than HALF the dogs it rehomed!!! In fact in 2007 the RSPCA euthanized 66,489 animals (granted it less than the 72,042 they destroyed in 2006!!).
Do you mean dogs which they took into their rescues for one reason or another? where are the figures from though? I mean are they accesable to the public anywhere?
Ruzzwazz, According to the annual report in 2007 the RSPCA rehomed/released (released means gave back to when dog was lost) 15,787 dogs yet it Humane euthanasia(ie destroyed)7,506 dogs more than HALF the dogs it rehomed!!! In fact in 2007 the RSPCA euthanized 66,489 animals (granted it less than the 72,042 they destroyed in 2006!!).
Their income in for 2007 was £114,100,000, it has £83.2 million in fixed assets, it has £123.5 million in investments so over £206 million pounds in assets and investments alone. Yet it spent £8,189,000 on campaigns and media work £1,349,000 on its Governance costs, and it it paid just 18 of its employees a total of £1.2 Million pounds in one year. So you asked can my source be trusted?
Well its all there in the RSPCA Annual review for 2007 Trustees and Financial report (on the RSPCA web site). If the people at Passionate Productions really cared about animals perhaps they should of investigated the people who pay the that former TV presenter as their CHIEF vet!! And ask why an organisation who had access to over £320 million pounds in one year still destroys over 7,500 dogs...now that is a dogs story that should be exposed. Would you like to comment Ruzzwazz?
@davidcavill Jemima's doc was fair - you just don't want to accept she is right and that dog breeders have destroyed the health of some of our best loved breeds! Watch the Doc again and then think about what your saying!
Ruzzwazz you really dont understand much do you! The RSPCA KILL/Destroy thousands of dogs every year that are in good health, and you cant see anything wrong in that (the figures are their own). As a Trustee of registered canine welfare charity I can assure you that they do not have to spend all their money to keep charity status (another thing you dont seem to be able to understand) and the point is
they dont spend it all the have tens of millions NOT being used (info their own published accounts), so tell how you can defend that? I think by your whole tone you must hate all dogs, please tell me what have YOU done for canine welfare? The vast majority of pedigree dogs are happy and healthy and are NOT diseased in any way, but the programme chose NOT to say that at any point!!
Quote; why the RSPCA Destroy thousands of healthy dogs each and every year
In the way you wrote that it means nothing, do you mean they destroyed 1000s because of ill health problems, whats wroung with that? where are your figueres from?
David all things considered the KC is far more open with publishing info on health schemes and results and registration than most other KCs in the world, and they have tried to consult the dog owning population on a wide range of subjects than they have in the past but the breed clubs and liason councils do not alway work that well. As for how the Club should be run that I think is a matter many will disagree over, indeed at time I know my own views/comments have not been to well received!!
Ruzzwazz as you never like to answer my questions but you do like to champion the RSPCA stance, perhaps you can tell me why the RSPCA Destroy thousands of healthy dogs each and every year and why they have Tens of Millions of pounds in reserve but plead in slick adverts for more funds every day claiming they need even more?!?! I know you can answer these queations as you seem to have a answer for everything else.
Gosh, just what has happened to Jemima?!?! she seems to have been so quick in the pastto defend her programme but has now seemed to have vanished!! I hope she has not strayed off and got lost but if she has I hope she was micro chipped under the petlog(KC) scheme!!!! who will be able to make excuses for all the mistakes in the programme now?
Ruzz - when will you realise that there are no hidden agendas regarding your concerns. There are lots of things about the KC I would (and continue to intend) to reform but they are about democracy and transparency as a private members club. As far as breeding is concerned and the breed standards they are being entirely open. And they were before this programme. I am pleased to confirm that they have been working on changes for years. PDE was wrong but has given the process a boost.
This programme is so BADLY made the facts it quotes in many cases are either incorrect or unsubstantiated the editing is poor and many was deceitful, the lack of balance & the DECISION by its makers not to show the full picture of ALL THE GOOD WORK DONE by the Kennel Club and People in Dogs is what should be exposed. Jemima, please could you reply to this I appreciate that as you have already said
There is no requirement of me as a programme-maker to give equal weight/airtime to opposing views. But perhaps you can at least defend some of the figures you have quoted in the programme, after all even if you and the BBC no longer believe in making balanced and un-biased programmes, you can at least prove some of the quotes you have made. It states of the 7million dogs in the UK 75% are pedigree & that dogs cost their owners £10M in vets fees every week,
ok sounds a lot but that is just £71.23 per dog per year (20p a day)its initial & yearly vaccinations would cost that much alone, without the basic cost of worming, Their are many health checks carried out by breeders via the KC/BVA schemes last year alone 32,000 dogs went though just 3 of their health test which would of been in that cost figure. They claim that there are just under 5,500,000 pedigree dogs in country (but they dont state how or where they get this figure?!?)
but in 2007 of the 209 breeds registered by the KC there were 270,707 new dogs registered (puppies and dogs imported to this country) So to reach figure claimed by the producers, it would take over 20 years to get to that figure based on last years registration figure, so if their figure is true no pedigree dog could have died for 20 years!!!!
No of course that is not right the figure quoted by them shows the way they have FAILED to just BASIC research on this issue. Yes here are problems in SOME pedigree dogs but this programme has failed to show the amount of good work already done by many people, who love and care for their dogs, what ever breed they might be. If you and the BBC cannot be accurate in figure just what TV programmes can we believe?

Breeders have used small gene pools in the past to create the very dogs we know and love today, and they are trying to continue what was started.
From modern science and hindsight, you can see that using small gene pools causes problems, as shown on BBC, and you do not dispute.
Dog lovers have health as top priority. If you love them then find a better method.
