My father both finger picked and claw-hammered. His claw hammer style was different, as he pulled up over the top string with his thumb instead of striking downward. It was beautiful to watch and wonderful to listen to. This version is good for the banjo picking, that's for sure. As a singer, he lacks that haunting quality that mountain folks seem to have built in.
after seeing david holt at the vancouver folk fest in 1990, I decided to devote playing the banjo clawhammer style! great banjo player and awesome licks at the 2:00 minute mark
It's good to hear this sort of music, before the tradition is lost. I grew up in the mountains of N.C. and used to hate this sort of music then realized it is an old and dying art. Most of the bluegrass you hear just isn't the same. This song is much older and most of the old tunes are not happy subject matter.
more and more people world wide are turning to clawhammer as an alternative to the formula one rigors of Scruggs.. haunting modal melodies and driving rhythms jsut ooze from clawhammer .. this style of play is undergoing a huge revival..
This is great!
