This is one of the best quality videos I've seen of the ride. Most were taken with very outdated cameras (well, outdated by compairson). Excellent job, I've added this to my favorites!
Everything they are replacing these rides with, sucks. They change them so often that the kids wont even remember them. =/ Not that any of them even care anymore, everyone would rather text or play with their latest gadgets then go see things like this, that really opens kids eyes. :)
As much as overall, as a ride, I like the old one far better, I just gotta say, first time I went on it I was very young, and I was absolutely terrified of the Dreamfinder
Just think of how awesome the new Figment ride could have been if Disney took the time to do some animatronic characters as awesome as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates ride! With technology today you could make an awesome new version of these artistically well thought out shows!
as if the ride isn't bad enough now, I remember all the fun interactive things they had in that huge area after the ride! Now they have only a few machines that barely do anything and a gift shop.
@leslie13536 I agree but I also remember that most of those awesome things were either broken or so packed with kids you could never dream of getting to play them. :P
Now I am not anti-update by any means. I have been going to WDW annually for nearly 30 years now. I remember when EPCOT didn't exist and you would take the monorail from the MK on a long ride to what would be EPCOT so they could show it off when leaving. What I don't understand though is the laziness of Disney. Here we have a park with 43Sq Miles available to them, yet rather than ADD new rides, they destroy old ones.. Much like PI, did they really need the room for shopping??
I have a Figment stuffed animal still. And also the monkey with butterfly wings and a rat's tail from the Captain E/O 3D movie. Nobody knows what they are when they see them...
@leeloo67 FUZZBALL! I wanted one of them from the store. My sister wouldn't let me buy one right away and said we'd go back and get one after we were done at the park. We went back to the store - and they were out of them! I was mad about that for YEARS. :D
I grew up with this version of the ride and I too don't like the update, but that's just because, as i said, I grew up with this one. I'm sure that 30 years from now, when they change it again, my son and step daughter will be upset because they miss the current version.
everyone is entitled to their own opinion but, i believe the second one is more child friendly. and i enjoyed it, its still one of my all time favorites even after the change.

I don't think anyone who works at Disney/Epcot ever goes on YouTube, otherwise they'd see that 99.9% of the fans are disgusted with just about every single change they make. Bring back Horizons! Bring back Journey into Imagination! BRING BACK THE MAGIC!!
I was so disappointed in the new ride i was in tears. The original was the best, I dont know why they changed it there was nothing wrong with it, it was magical and full of imagination. The new one stinks!!!!!!!
@The1234567890qwe You'd think they'd learn that replacing classic attractions with a large fanbase isn't smart. I had the same reaction when I was on Stitch's [Not At All] Great Escape.
If it isn't broken, don't fix it!!! Why Disney felt the need to completely change this venue is beyond me (and everyone else, based on what I'm reading).
It is AWFUL!
The original was so magical and fun. Wish they would just bring it back and make everyone happy again. At least they are playing Captain EO again. That is a good thing. However, the return of "Magic Journeys" would be wonderful, too!
Oh, man, how I miss this ride. The new version sucks MAJOR ass. I also miss the old Image Works. How are you supposed to "remember the magic" when they keep changing everything?!?
The new ride is so bad, that if you go on a peak season and you want to ride an attraction without lines, go to new imagination, while all others has 60 minutes wait this one will be 5.
@mgarciah I know. I loved the original as a child, but the new one is just horrible. It is not just Disney nostalgia either. I truly do not like the ride. It's the only ride I hate at Disney.
Disney has made some huge mistakes, but changing this into the new Imagination "lite" was one of the biggest. Something as timeless as "Imagination" and they thought they would make it.... CHEAPER TO OPERATE, that's the bottom line. They also thought nobody would notice the change. Wrong, we all noticed. I feel sorry for the people who never got to see the original. But now they can! Thanks for the memories.
When My mom and I went in 1997 it was clear that this ride was on it's last legs because there where long lines for almost all the other rides but this ride and no wait at all. After we got off the ride we thought that it was boring. But after getting to experience the new ride in December of 2009 I realize how much more entertaing this version of the ride is than the redo. I think that they should not have tried to connect it to Honey I shrunk the Audience .
i LOVED this ride as a kid.....as soon as the changed it I refused to go back on it. I mean the ruined one of may all time fave rides....followed by the boat ride in Mexico :( I cant stand how the changed it! It is such a waist of a ride now.
I wish you could see a little more to the left where the puff of smoke or whatever it was that went into the front cone. There was also a certain smell in there too...
What about science, science, science, science.......
Stuff like the Seas with Nemo and the disaster that is the new Journey Into Imagination are perfect examples of when corporate sponsorship (or lack of it in Seas' case) goes bad!
epcot has really gone downhill lately... the living sea is practically gone, the practically abandoned real life under the sea exploration for animatronic crap, they got rid of the honey i shrunk the kids show im pretty sure and replaced it with Micheal Jackson or some crap... and even the body adventure ride and that whole section is shut down.... what happened to that place? it used to be interesting and educational, they practically abandoned anything to with education
I have a picture of me posing with the Dreamfinder that walked around the area. He kept asking why my lips were so blue (was eating a blue lolipop before I went up to him). He had the Figment puppet on his lap, and I remember thinking he was real! It was a very special moment and I will treasure the photo for life. :)
I looooved this version of the ride (the 2nd one was terrible and the new one is cool) BUT the whole beginning part when they are flying on the "thing-a-ma-jig" I always thought took wayyyyy too long. (When I was a kid anyway.
I will say having rode all 3 versions though, none will be as great as the original. (but due to sponsorships and being out-dated- ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I still love every aspect of Disney, and always will.
you got it! iloved this ride it was my favorited disney ride as a kid. i made my parents take me on this like 20 times! i still can sing the words through . they never should have gotten rid of this ride... (and yea the new one sucks) thanks.
@JohnMigle They still have a ride with figment in the same spot that pretends to be Journey into Imagination, but it's so incredibly horrible compared to this it's not even funny. It's just.... it needs to be shut down and returned to this. Even the interactive area you go into after the ride is over is totally lacking.
This was by far my favorite Disney attraction ever. When I think of my first visit to Epcot, I always remember how enthralled I was by this magical ride. Thanks for posting! The ride that replaced it is hardly worth in line for.
The Dreamfinder was so cool to me. I miss the old Figment and Dreamfinder, especially the cast members that you could see in the park outside the attraction! The new one isn't even engaging. Sorry, Eric Idle, but you just don't do the ride justice.
What a magical ride. I haven't been on the new one, but I just did a ride-through video. What a bunch of crap. They truly need to bring this one back. If Disney was really smart they would bring back all classic rides and exhibits that have been replaced and open them all up in one park. Like a Disney nostalgia park. There are enough people who remember these classics so sentimentally (like me) who would pay to ride and see these again.
@DROCK51 I'm 14 and there's so many Disney rides I wish I could've ridden but are no longer here. I completely agree with you about making a Disney nostalgia park. I would love to see the old rides in the original like the Enchanted Tiki Room.
I didn't even know they changed this ride until I was there in October. I got in the car and was like "Didn't these used to be purple?" The woman operating the ride didn't really understand at first (guess the ride changed like 10 years ago). Needless to say I was disappointed before the ride even started, then got off even more disappointed. SUCKS!
I would have loved tgo see that ride! I dont think me and my mom found it when we went to wdw a few years ago. But I SOOOo wanted to! The first prize I won at the county fair carnival games was a purple dragon and I named it figment! ^_^
i cant believe they got rid of this fantastic ride. my mom bought a figment doll when i went there. they still have the original ride building and ive seen the blueprint that compares the original and the new ride. it horrorifing what they did. they took out 30% of the original track and put in a new queue line!
God how I miss this ride! The new one is terrible! They need to bring this back asap!
At least this one inspires the imagination. I can't believe they took it away :( I have videos from when I was like 4 years old with the Dream Finder outside the ride! Good times..
I can remember being on a ride in Magic Kingdom the first time I visited, where I sat in a room with an alien allegedly running around! I can seem to find record of it anywhere, or even what it was called! Any idea's people. These clips have been great!
The new one doesn't seem as immersive at this one. The earlier one was more focused on spectacle and the spark of creative thought, the new one tries to deconstruct the idea of imagination and make it more analytical.
I'm so glad this was here! I went to Disney world in 1990 and remembered this ride being really cool. I went there again this year and it was the most "unimaginative" ride. I just can't believe the designers couldn't have used more imagination on their imagination ride! At least you have saved it for posterity here. Thanks!
I remember dreamfinder so clearly and i havent seen it since 94 along with horizons. in 2004 I went on imagination all ready to go on this egzact ride and walked out of the pavilion so disapointed for like an hour. They try to make the ride funny but it is anoying. You shouldnt be on a disney or epcot ride saying this is crap. If they want to change it put something better there.
Yes, actually. Most of it is thrown away, vaulted, or sold off for parts or in backstage shops to cast members. The rest is rotting in the no longer used area in the upstairs of the pyramid, lying around all the broken down interactive playthings they never bothered to remove.
It's truly heartbreaking and beautiful up there. I got to see it all for just a few minutes during my orientation day. I cried.
I remember riding this ride and then going to EPCOT a couple years later and discovering by surprise that it completely changed and had Eric Idle from Monty Python narrate it.
Toon Town at Disneyland just SUCKS! They have scales down from when it was first opened, taking out all the slides from Chip and Dales Treehouse, Donald ducks boat house, and even the ball room at Chip and Dales tree house is empty. Lot's of wasted space, and even the Trolly car is no more.
No, because Kodak's contract was almost up with JII and Fuji Films was going to take it and make it a thrill ride, so Kodak made an offer to Disney by making another version (which was the bad one from 1999-2001) but Disney agreed for the idea and they got resigned.
this and michael jackson ride were so awesome.... everyone i ever talked to either doesnt remember it or thought it was fucking weird guess its why i am who i am cuz it was my favorite stuff at disney hahaha and mr toads wild ride where at the end you go to hell hahah
Yes yes yes yes! I love this ride. I was crushed when they closed it. :[ I have a ton of figment stuff. By far one of my favorite rides EVER. I really hope they bring something like it back because this is a classic.
Oohh.. the part with Figment opening up the paint jar with the rainbow makes me cry, my parents had a dinner plate with a picture of that in our kitchen for the longest time. Figment is my favorite Disney character EVER!
I actually heard that probably in in 2010, 2011, or in 2012 that they are going to re-build the original ride, or one simialar to this one... and they even said that they are going to put Dreamfinder back in there too, but I'm not sure I wrote a letter to Epcot asking them, they did not reply...yet. But, I hope that they make that come true, I really do... and you guys probably do agree with me too, say "I" if you do!
I have been wishing upon a star for years that they bring this version back. I refuse to ride Journey Into Imagination until they do. I am a former cast member and my husband is current, but I have not heard this information. I can only hope you are right!!! Where did you hear this?
Well, actually I heard from a site and it said that Walt Disney World Resort or I think just Epcot signing a contract or something called "Imagination Demolition"... and it said that this version will be closing in a year or two and will rebuild this original ride or a ride similar to the old one, it is awesome how you're husband works there! Can you ask him to see if it is true? I hope it is though.
That article may have been from 2005 or 2006 when Apple became top shareholder of Disney. They also wanted to rename Imagineers (coined by Roy) to WED Members (the name Walt gave them). It was supposed to happen by 2007 for EPCOT's 25th anniversary, but no luck... Right now, they've just finished a Vacation Club section for Animal Kingdom and they're working on a new DownTown Disney EastSide to open in 2012, so a major overhaul of JII is not likely.. but you never know! Just keep wishing!!
No, they will not. Disney no longer has full rights to Roger Rabbit, which is why he was taken out of all the parades and the warehouse area at MGM Studios was removed. Now, we do still have full rights to Jessica Rabbit, and you'll see her in several places in Disney World and Disney Land, but never with her 'hunny bunny'...
lol They have Toon Town in Disneyland. There isn't TOO much to do if you aren't a little kid but they do have the Roger Rabbit ride which is really fun.
They also have a version of Toon Town in Disney World but from what I've seen, it doesn't look as good.
Wow! This brings me back 25 years. I forgot all about this version. Parts were stuck in memory and I couldn't remember where they were from. I like the new version but the old one was still great. It had more visual stimulation. Great job!
I'm only 20 years old, but this ride still holds a very fond memory in my childhood experience of DisneyWorld. It seems that all the classic rides of Disney have been remade to fit the "current" times which just ruins them. I mean...they remade Pirates of the Caribbean to be like the movie...that makes no sense honestly XD The movie was based off of the ride, not the other way around.
I am a huge fan of SP and I never put two and two together. The mayor of Imagnationland looks kinda like the Dreamfinder, even that little contraption he rides.
i agree that the original was way better, i wished they kept the old one, the new one sucks, its to much science, what does science have to do with imagination
This was one of my fave rides when i ws little I took my kids on it last week and it is now HORRIBLE! 2 of 5 of my kids fell asleep! Its so boring and has nothing to do with imagination! Its more abour your senses! YUCKY! I loved the original
A little known fact is that exact Dream Finder Audio Animatronic is currently located at Disneyland Resort paris as the "Ghost Host" in Phantom Manor at the far side of Frontierland. You tube it, he has the key to the city in his hands :)
Y'know, since most of this is still intact, they should try a refurb for nostalgia/Anniversary sake--Imagination never truly Ages!
I last went in 99, so I would've missed out on Imagination--We skipped over the entirety of epcot, actually

@DROCK51 I'm 14 and there's so many Disney rides I wish I could've ridden but are no longer here. I completely agree with you about making a Disney nostalgia park. I would love to see the old rides in the original like the Enchanted Tiki Room.

I am happy that they kept Figment . He is the only reason why i go to Epcot lol
Sabrinacat1 2 years ago 2
I didn't even know they changed this ride until I was there in October. I got in the car and was like "Didn't these used to be purple?" The woman operating the ride didn't really understand at first (guess the ride changed like 10 years ago). Needless to say I was disappointed before the ride even started, then got off even more disappointed. SUCKS!
xxxrawtruthxxx 2 years ago
They still keep the music, and still have Figment, but that guy who says something different is not there. I miss that guy AND the old ride.

"...and still have Figment"
Yes, but he goes from zero to annoying as hell in 2.3 seconds in the updated version. Ah well...at least we have the videos of the original. :(

This seems a lot cooler than the current version.

Why did they get rid of this ride, It was so much fun!
KoPT01 2 years ago 2
I believe the sponsor pulled the plug, when the sponsor pulls the plug the ride goes too usually if they do not get a new sponsor.
Snoopy101100 2 years ago
@Snoopy101100
No. As far back as I can remember it has always been sponsored by Kodak, and it still is.

I would have loved tgo see that ride! I dont think me and my mom found it when we went to wdw a few years ago. But I SOOOo wanted to! The first prize I won at the county fair carnival games was a purple dragon and I named it figment! ^_^

i cant believe they got rid of this fantastic ride. my mom bought a figment doll when i went there. they still have the original ride building and ive seen the blueprint that compares the original and the new ride. it horrorifing what they did. they took out 30% of the original track and put in a new queue line!
avastindi 2 years ago
It's still there. I was just at Epcot yesterday.

These clips have been great!
sprki 2 years ago
That was called "The Extra-Terrorestrial Alien Encounter." I believe it was removed for being too frightening for the Magic Kingdom

The new one doesn't seem as immersive at this one. The earlier one was more focused on spectacle and the spark of creative thought, the new one tries to deconstruct the idea of imagination and make it more analytical.

They changed this?! I can't believe it. I still have my figment stuffed animal and hat from when I was a kid.

I remember bits and pieces of the original ride. What ever happened to the concept of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"?
ztslovebird 2 years ago
I still have my Figment toys from way back. I remember most of this ride even though I was really young. Thanks for posting.
23metroboi23 2 years ago
I'm so glad this was here! I went to Disney world in 1990 and remembered this ride being really cool. I went there again this year and it was the most "unimaginative" ride. I just can't believe the designers couldn't have used more imagination on their imagination ride! At least you have saved it for posterity here. Thanks!
Smittycat1234 2 years ago
They fucked this ride up big time. It should have been left like this. Compared to the new one, this one's 10 times better.

If they want to change it put something better there.

does any body know what they do with the old equipment?
ratchclank1 2 years ago
@ratchclank1
I cried.

Toon Town at Disneyland just SUCKS! They have scales down from when it was first opened, taking out all the slides from Chip and Dales Treehouse, Donald ducks boat house, and even the ball room at Chip and Dales tree house is empty. Lot's of wasted space, and even the Trolly car is no more.

did they change it up because it was alittle creepy for kids?
14marshl 2 years ago
No, because Kodak's contract was almost up with JII and Fuji Films was going to take it and make it a thrill ride, so Kodak made an offer to Disney by making another version (which was the bad one from 1999-2001) but Disney agreed for the idea and they got resigned.
GNRfan97 2 years ago
this and michael jackson ride were so awesome.... everyone i ever talked to either doesnt remember it or thought it was fucking weird guess its why i am who i am cuz it was my favorite stuff at disney hahaha and mr toads wild ride where at the end you go to hell hahah

Yes yes yes yes! I love this ride. I was crushed when they closed it. :[ I have a ton of figment stuff. By far one of my favorite rides EVER. I really hope they bring something like it back because this is a classic.
SuperBitCube64 2 years ago
Oohh.. the part with Figment opening up the paint jar with the rainbow makes me cry, my parents had a dinner plate with a picture of that in our kitchen for the longest time.

GNRfan97 2 years ago 3
I have been wishing upon a star for years that they bring this version back. I refuse to ride Journey Into Imagination until they do. I am a former cast member and my husband is current, but I have not heard this information. I can only hope you are right!!! Where did you hear this?
Cynabunnie 2 years ago
Well, actually I heard from a site and it said that Walt Disney World Resort or I think just Epcot signing a contract or something called "Imagination Demolition"... and it said that this version will be closing in a year or two and will rebuild this original ride or a ride similar to the old one, it is awesome how you're husband works there! Can you ask him to see if it is true? I hope it is though.
GNRfan97 2 years ago
That article may have been from 2005 or 2006 when Apple became top shareholder of Disney. They also wanted to rename Imagineers (coined by Roy) to WED Members (the name Walt gave them). It was supposed to happen by 2007 for EPCOT's 25th anniversary, but no luck... Right now, they've just finished a Vacation Club section for Animal Kingdom and they're working on a new DownTown Disney EastSide to open in 2012, so a major overhaul of JII is not likely.. but you never know! Just keep wishing!!
Cynabunnie 2 years ago
I havent been to disney land in EVER! Do you know if they'll ever make a toon-town related thing!?
ILuvJokerMoreThanYou 2 years ago
No, they will not. Disney no longer has full rights to Roger Rabbit, which is why he was taken out of all the parades and the warehouse area at MGM Studios was removed. Now, we do still have full rights to Jessica Rabbit, and you'll see her in several places in Disney World and Disney Land, but never with her 'hunny bunny'...
Cynabunnie 2 years ago
lol They have Toon Town in Disneyland. There isn't TOO much to do if you aren't a little kid but they do have the Roger Rabbit ride which is really fun.
They also have a version of Toon Town in Disney World but from what I've seen, it doesn't look as good.

It's a shame that they changed this ride D:
I'm only 20 years old, but this ride still holds a very fond memory in my childhood experience of DisneyWorld. It seems that all the classic rides of Disney have been remade to fit the "current" times which just ruins them. I mean...they remade Pirates of the Caribbean to be like the movie...that makes no sense honestly XD The movie was based off of the ride, not the other way around.

A little known fact is that exact Dream Finder Audio Animatronic is currently located at Disneyland Resort paris as the "Ghost Host" in Phantom Manor at the far side of Frontierland. You tube it, he has the key to the city in his hands :)
