the word "Bof" don't really have a translation. But we can understand "I don't care" or "I don't really like it".

We use this especially when we don't to talk of the subjet of the conversation :

Exemple :

-Comment était ta journée ? (How was your day ?)

My mother tongue is french and I had never heard that "beauf" word before. So I read in the dicto it's a familiar word but I would definitely advise you not to use it. I wouldn't have been able to guess its meaning! That's probably used by lower class people.

Yes, it's similar, but "whatever" can be used in a rude manner. I don't think it's the case of "Bof". The worst example of usage of Bof I could think of would be: "How do you like my new hair cut? — Bof." It just means you feel excited about that new hair cut.
