FRAPS. Probably the most common way to capture video. I did plop down the $30 or so for the full version. Free version records 1 minute at a time and has a "stamp" on the screen. Used Windows Live Movie Maker to edit and convert the RAW video to something useful. Not the most sophisticated but it does a nice job.
