Cash for Clunkers was bullshit, perfectly good cars destroyed, and people ripped off. The new cars that replaced the older cars are unreliable weak pieces of crap, that people love for some fuckin' reason. Old cars will always be there when you need them, new cars can't provide that.
@taledarkside Sorry, I didn't think saving Chrysler and GM and possibly Ford "destroyed" our auto industry. Now, they are making better cars than ever to keep up with the competition. Thanks, to him.
@taledarkside Ford did actually, they requested 14 billion, but were denied. If GM and Chrysler would have gone down, many of their suppliers would have greatly decreased or gone bankrupt as well. Ford shares these suppliers, so they would have had production slowed as well. They bought more fuel efficient vehicles, not just imports. Less fuel = less dependency on fuel = less dependency on foreign nations
"Toyota accounted for 19.4 % of sales, followed by General Motors with 17.6 %, Ford with 14.4 %, Honda with 13.0 %, and Nissan with 8.7%."
looks like Obama didn't help any American companies.
who cares about fuel dependency. If you wanna cry tree hugger, you caused a huge pollution scrapping good cars. blowing their motors which caused them to start on fire. Smart.
@taledarkside Obama doesn't mandate how they make their cars. He didn't help Toyota, that's for sure. They're just a big company that was very successful that year.
@taledarkside Why would that be a regulation? It was based on saving fuel, not buying American. Which actually, most Toyota's are more American than their "American" counterpart.
@taledarkside Really? So, cars.com just rates the Camry and Accord the most American cars for no reason? They are made with over 80% American parts in America.
It did boost auto sales, not just American auto sales, auto sales in general. They never specified that American automakers would be the only benefactors.
cars.com is bias just like consumer reports. CR claimed Toyota was the best car only because Toyota was paying the magazine.
You gonna tell me not one US car is made all in america? LOL
The program was to benefit american automotive industry. which it didn't. You can argue all you want, but if you can't comprehend something this simple you shouldn't discuss anything.
@taledarkside Oh no! Somebody gives a Japanese company a good rating, they must be biased! Are their any car sources that you trust? KBB, Intellichoice, Edmunds, J.D., Forbes? Anyone? 'cause they have all given awards to Toyota. and No, most American cars are made here but with very low percentages of American parts. It totally helped the American auto industry, the big three all saw boosts in sales. They desperately needed those boosts too.
Edmund, JD and forbes are a lot more reliable than consumer reports. And when you own a shop, you can see how much of a shitty car Toyota is in the real world.
There were no real boost in sales because the people that were going to buy cars anyway. You must be an obama lover to support crushing good cars, causing more polution, and not doing anything to the economy.
@taledarkside you must have never owned a Toyota to think that.
And I must be an Obama lover. He's improved employment, and has had more states allow equal rights in one term than all other presidents combined. That's why I like him.
@92CamryLE Competition? It should be against the law to mention competition then in the next sentence praise a Obama for the bailout. A bailout is the exact opposite of competition. And it encourages the exact opposite of competition. In competition one is not shielded from failure by someone else, especially at the expense of a third party, namely the tax payer.
has to get 18 miles to the gallon or less and has to run?! and newer then 83?! WTF!!! DUDE A FUCKING CLUNKER IS A NONE RUNNING OR ON ITS WAY TO DYING CAR!!! A truck is gonna get less then 18 MILES TO A FUCKING GALLON! FUCKING MORONS! WHAT THE HELL! Obama and his "fool proof" plans... yeah. my 87 gets 12 miles to a gallon on a good day but runs like a boss, that's a real vehicle and isn't a clunker nor were the cars in that video!!! what next? you want us to sell our first born child too?
I wonder how many people traded in paid off decent vehicles for $4500 off on the lease of a new vehicle, then for whatever reason were unable to make their lease payments, thus being out of both their old vehicle and its replacement. Regardless of whether or not they had more than the vehicle they traded to C4C
so all the crappy cars in your back yard that don't run is no good but all the running cars were destroyed along with a bunch of parts. Sad time for cars.
I'm 19, I need to find reliable transportation for work and I have no credit. I can either go buy a used car now for $5000+ somehow..... or just ride with my family for the rest of my life until I save up thousands of dollars to get a used piece of shit that will last me 2 years and then start over again. This was a useless program that mainly hurt Highschool students and highschool graduates who are trying to start out in the world. why should I pay $10,000 for a car with 158,000 miles?.......
Fantastic video, I was surprised to see it was from network television but they were spot on about how ignorant the Obama administration and Timothy Geithner were to implement such an idiotic policy. Unfortunately this was a microcosm of almost every policy so far. If you look at the stimulus and health care reform it makes me think Americaa is like that car getting squished.
parts that could have been used to keep a similar car on the road. Exactly....get rid of the cores and the spare parts....and kill the latency of the demise of a generation of vehicles. This bodes well for auto manufacturers selling new cars and forcing others to buy new because of lack of spare parts. The auto manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank!!!
Cash For Clunkers pisses me off to no end. We the American people, who bitch all the time about being wasteful, take a bunch of perfectly useful running driving cars, and what do we do? Salvage them? No. Put them in junkyards for parts? No. We crush them. Whoever thought up this waste of an idea should have their ass kicked.
This was infact one of the hidden intentions of the program. Not only take the cars off the road, but make sure they can not be used for parts to keep other cars on the road, increasing the likelyhood that they will be junked as used parts become too scarce or expensive. This creates a secondary demand for new cars
Another downside was the loss of many good used cars from the market that could have provided better transportation for those with older and real clunkers plus all the jobs that would have provided or maintained. What did this do to the price of used cars? Did no one think this trought completely?
I am a union auto worker, from Detroit, and nobody got anything at all from this program... Nothing! the econemy here is just as bad as it was before this program, if not worse... get your facts right
I think a better idea would of been "imports are clunkers." All the people that could of used these perfectly good cars can go and raid Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki etc.. dealerships and destroy all the Jap cars in sight. All foreign imports especially foreign trucks are pieces of shit and wouldnt even last a fraction as long as these perfectly good, used, American vehicles would have. Japanese vehicles suck and should be anhiliated
I sure know alot of good people that could have used some of those useable cars to get to work. Including me. And help keep some good mechanics in business.
So many cars, so many tax dollars wasted. For what? Just another big government scam. Oh lets take perfectly paid off cars that will last years to come, and give you a little bit of money so you can by a piece of shit re-branded Japaneses car that you will OWE MONEY ON for another 5-12 years so you can save a TON of money on fuel prices with the extra 10 miles to the gallon you'll get. New cars are shit. That's why my cars are from all from the 1980's. Reliable, strong and NOT a piece of shit.
i agree i just watched a video of a 1998 mercury villager being undrivable forever i mean it had 200k miles on it but overall villagers are the best vans u can buy that mercury still could of been used for a teens 1st car
If the government had qualified accessors only crush a car if it had absolutely no recyclable parts then the crushing wouldn't of ever happend. Also if they crushed any car that had salvageable parts they would get an instant $1000 fine plus three strikes only. Also the government should allow all vehicles to remain in the scrapyard providing the owner paid there a small yearly fee such as $600 which wouldn't be that much. Crushing cars that have salvageable parts is retarded
Damn right. This program was a MASSIVE load of shit. Another example of just how much Congress screws us over. There is NO WAY that Mercedes diesel got less than 18 miles to the gallon!
The u.s. sells alot of scrap steel to china. China has a need. Taxpayers will pay to sell them recycled steel so they can make more junk to ship back over here for us to buy at walmart. The u.s. is scrapping alot of old great quality cast iron from closed factories machines, and selling it to china. We don't make that quality of cast iron now. Some depends on content, such as nickle.
This plan sounds like a bush plan for his oil and auto buddies yet Obama pushed this retarded thing; when I first heard the plan I thought they were jokeing!!! In the next election I hope they have "NONE OF THE ABOVE" in the ballot. I would vote for anyone other then the Republicans or Democrats; I wish those people deminstrating on WALL STREET in NYC would ban togeather and put someone on the ballet; they have my vote and I bet half the country too
Wasn't the brightest move...It also is one of the reasons why cheap and reliable (especially low mileage) transportation is going for premium prices in the used car market now...
Its more eco-friendly to crush a perfectly good car and get it replaced with a piece of shit ecoshitbox that will only last a few years, rather than keeping these reliable cars on the road. LIBERAL STUPIDITY AT ITS BEST
@BuffaloSabres134 yes plus all the energy wasted to make new parts for older cars because 3rd party manufaacturers keep these things alive and that's more energy to make a part that should not have been destroyed on a working vehicle . if nothing else it could have been retrofitted with newer technology to propell it and save even more energy from being wasted by building a new body. total waste and ignorance.
My SUV would be considered a clunker, but it is in perfect condition and drivable for a couple more 100k miles, crushing it would be a waste. At least give those cars to the needy or sell em again or strip em for parts...but don't crush them....SHAME on our Liberal moron.
if you own a clunker that is 15 years old or older, your going have to total it if you crashed it or if it keeps on breaking down on you because there won't be any parts available anymore.
and another thing in 30 years from now, a brand new car like a Chevy Aveo5 will be $120,000 and used cars will be $35,000 $50,000 or $80,000 and that mean that the cheap form of transportation will be Taking a bus, A city Bus fair would be $20 to get on, a Greyhound bus fairs would be $500 each way. now think about it people.
@sideslide23 if that is true then someone will invent a car that cost $9k get 200 mpg and do 175 mph and be totally crashworthy upto 175 mph .of course minimum wage would be $100 per hour.
the answer is did did not only more damage to are economy it created more congestion wince every one can now afford to flood the highways now, Cash for clunker doesn't make any Sence, Cash for Relocation would work better 1 gives people opportunity to move lot closer to work so he or she doesn't have to drive too far away to creat traffic jam, and 2 the gov would buy people homes off of people and get them to move closer to work. and sell the property to people who works in that area.
people like that should be shot .I'm a car guy myself and I've watched them destroy firebirds, supra's,camaro's and yes it is killing the little bissinesses for sure....
This was a bullshit and assinine program that destroyed thousands of reliable, and classic cars and trucks. Absolutely disgusting. Some low income famies could have used the majority of these cars to get to work and earn the bread for their families table because THEY CAN'T AFFORD A NEW CAR! Most of these GOOD cars still got 18 to 20 MPG highway. This just makes me want to puke.
They will never get my car, I will driveit around till no more oil can be found, screw the hybrid loving hippies that preach about saving the earth. The green cars they drive run on electricity, where does that come from, BURNING COAL!,
Welcome to USSR Comrades, You will have only one car company, you will have only one new paper, you will have only one grocery store. AND You will work slave!
hey hippies, want to wake up to reality? A recent study concluded that not only is the Toyota prius NOT the most fuel efficient car, it has THE WORST enviornmental impact. Producing all those batteries and other parts on the prius, technically, a RANGE ROVER LR3 would have less of an enviornmental impact than a prius.
Sick This is why we have idiots up in D.C. that don't have a clue about anything if they would have just took 5 minutes and rethink what they would have been doing and how many people it can effect maybe they would have stopped this program from happening.
The government owns a large percentage of GM and Chrysler. What better way to protect "there" pocket than to crush all the old ones and make us go buy a new one. Sad country we live in. BAD idea Obama!!
All of the aspects of Cash for Clunkers were downsides. There are people that would be glad to have a perfectly usable car, but no, you Prius driving hippies had to destroy them. Cash for Clunkers was undoubtedly one of the biggest scams in American history.
I'll tell you what happens....All these jobs are shipped to China...All of these cars are destroyed affecting all entities described... Obama should have been impeached the minute he stepped in to office...Hell I am surprised that he made on his walk... This country has gone to crap because of this Government... Think I am gonna figure out a way to build my own Grid and get Obama in there with a thousand clunker lightcycles and say...It's your move Obama....COME ON!!! COME ON!!!!!!
It's bad for the economy not only their destroying parts and destroying them instead of giving them to dealerships their wasting land with thousands of cars that are way beyond their time to die they take owners cars and crush them

Wasn't the brightest move...It also is one of the reasons why cheap and reliable (especially low mileage) transportation is going for premium prices in the used car market now...

i cant wait to get that idiot out of the oval office, what the hell were you people thinking that voted for that nazi bastard?

Its more eco-friendly to crush a perfectly good car and get it replaced with a piece of shit ecoshitbox that will only last a few years, rather than keeping these reliable cars on the road. LIBERAL STUPIDITY AT ITS BEST
BuffaloSabres134 4 months ago

BuffaloSabres134 4 months ago
if you own a clunker that is 15 years old or older, your going have to total it if you crashed it or if it keeps on breaking down on you because there won't be any parts available anymore.

Wow 700.000 brand new cars sold, sounds like a pretty good plan to me, especially if I was in the car business!
Mrphatbastard1 5 months ago
and another thing in 30 years from now, a brand new car like a Chevy Aveo5 will be $120,000 and used cars will be $35,000 $50,000 or $80,000 and that mean that the cheap form of transportation will be Taking a bus, A city Bus fair would be $20 to get on, a Greyhound bus fairs would be $500 each way. now think about it people.
sideslide23 5 months ago
@sideslide23 if that is true then someone will invent a car that cost $9k get 200 mpg and do 175 mph and be totally crashworthy upto 175 mph .of course minimum wage would be $100 per hour.
circusboy90210 3 months ago
I get it at 3:10 think of Radiator Spring from Walt Disney movie Cars.
sideslide23 5 months ago
come on the minivan seats are easier to take out such as the second row and 3rd row seats.
sideslide23 5 months ago
the answer is did did not only more damage to are economy it created more congestion wince every one can now afford to flood the highways now, Cash for clunker doesn't make any Sence, Cash for Relocation would work better 1 gives people opportunity to move lot closer to work so he or she doesn't have to drive too far away to creat traffic jam, and 2 the gov would buy people homes off of people and get them to move closer to work. and sell the property to people who works in that area.

This just makes me want to puke.

clunkers??? wtf??? Obama you need the same, this is absurd!!!
Lipeh69 7 months ago
hey hippies, want to wake up to reality? A recent study concluded that not only is the Toyota prius NOT the most fuel efficient car, it has THE WORST enviornmental impact. Producing all those batteries and other parts on the prius, technically, a RANGE ROVER LR3 would have less of an enviornmental impact than a prius.

I think this plan is as retarded as Obama himself.

If they wanted to protect the economy wouldn't it have been better to give a car to someone who needs one, so they can get a job and get of welfare.
The embodied energy just crushed instead of being used, is criminal.
r107roadster 7 months ago
Sick This is why we have idiots up in D.C. that don't have a clue about anything if they would have just took 5 minutes and rethink what they would have been doing and how many people it can effect maybe they would have stopped this program from happening.

The government owns a large percentage of GM and Chrysler. What better way to protect "there" pocket than to crush all the old ones and make us go buy a new one. Sad country we live in. BAD idea Obama!!
mmmnascar 8 months ago
they can sell a lot of parts, but they prefer this destroyed....stupid.....
TomaHawck14 9 months ago
