The Nintendo 64 is so epic, the Death Star surface bent and twisted under the pressure of it's awesomeness resulting in full 90 degree turns the likes of which no other Star Wars game has ever known.

Lucasarts/Factor 5 probably thought that with the current engine and the width they gave the trench, giving it turns would have made the gameplay less redundant. I know that in a trench of the N64's scale that going in a straight line would have been a little anti-climactic.
